I played Zero Dawn and fell head over heels in love with it. Aloy is such a special character. This game will appeal more to the gamers than the story nerds. The combat mechanics have been heavily improved and the world feels vastly larger. Aloy feels a bit too.. mythic for me. That sense that she was a lone wolf fighting to claim her place in the world from HZD has been replaced with a legendary warrior. Natural escalation I suppose. I'm glad to see the series continue. The soundtrack is as unbelievably potent as with HZD. Joris de Man, Oleksa Lozowchuk, The Flight and Niels van der Leest produced something truly remarkable. It feels ancient but modern. Tribal but cosmopolitan.
If you loved the first game, you're going to want to play this one but be warned: This game is packed full of jank and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The studio rested on their laurels and did not improve and tighten up on things, they cut corners and left ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ untouched by polish that just taints the experience. Many of the base systems feel less polished than the first game. The big one that was so popular to hate on, Aloy's face. I can accept if she aged, but that's not the case. The game makes it very clear form the get-go that the events here take place a few months after the end of the last game. She's still only within a few years of her coming of age trial in the first game. She's supposed to be what, 18-20? Changing her face at all made no sense and was remarkably distracting after getting to know the character so much in the first game. She doesn't even look closer to old Sobek in the holo records you find. I modded it to just give back her original face and now I don't feel like I'm watching some stranger in the cutscenes that just totally took me out of it. That brings up my second issue, the cutscenes are more like cut-corners. Flickering faces, models shifting around, just no love put into it. Slapped together jank and shoved out the door. (And yes this was a thing rampant even in the very beginning of the game before I ever modded anything, it's the base game. They didn't even bother with a best foot forward) And speaking of flickering movement. Every time you line up a shot in concentration mode there is an ever present chance that the machine you're targeting will walk over a pebble and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ loony-toons dodge your arrow. It's uncanny. The movement needs SO MUCH WORK. I am constantly fighting to just get Aloy to move where I want her to move but getting stuck on round objects, unable to walk over elevations shorter than her knee, unable to use a glider because a grapple point is within radius that's not even in line of sight yanks me where I didn't aim to go...I could go on. This is the quality I'd expect out of a beta, not a finished product that's been out for years and clearly has received little to no no bug fixes. And bugs there are. There are several types of endgame loot you need for upgrades that if you knock off, you'd better bum-rush to go collect it mid-fight because there's a good chance that it'll just disappear. Eaten by the ground, break and not allow collecting, whatever the ♥♥♥♥. Rockbreaker claws are awful for this, and they are incredibly annoying to collect because the rockbreaker literally just lives underground unless you break all 4. It takes FOREVER. Speaking of stupid fights, there's plenty of new machines that have something about them that is just *dumb*. Frostclaw and fireclaw bears for example. Massive health pool, tons of armor, tough to take down. Makes sense. Can shovel up rocks and coat them in an element and throw them like a bomb, makes sense. Picking up slabs of earth and using it as a shield, makes sense. Shoves it's face and claws into the ground and causes an eruption under your feet without any need to know where you are, or have line of sight, like a level 20 DnD Wizard amping up his spell slots. Huh? WTF? (Also, whoever decided that sac webbing can only be looted if the enormous soft underbelly is left intact but not the tough to hit/break shoulders, causing you to treat the actual tank with kid gloves in order to get the loot you need: Sincerely, ♥♥♥♥ you. I hope that every time a frost or fire claw twitches and catches an arrow that breaks its belly and causes a player to lose their loot from this jank ass game, that you stub the ever loving ♥♥♥♥ out of your pinky toe. The same toe every time, in perpetuity.) All the machines in the first game were grounded in some type of realism. Advanced tech, durable machines made of extraordinary materials, and power sources to keep them going and power energy based weaponry. They shoot, they jump, they bite and claw, they even launch barrages, it all makes sense from a military tech stand point. But why is a bear casting Eruption with omnipotence? Why does the giant turtle with stubby little legs get to spend forever moving around underground the same as the rockbreaker? So many things feel like they were thrown in because 'yeah that seems cool' with no respect for good enemy design or continuity on the game as a whole. Speaking of thrown in, the skill tree. Half the new skills follow the same incantation logic. Why are you able to now throw a spear and have it split into a barrage like a WoW hunter casting Volley in an area? Where did that stealth gauntlet come from? Why does face paint make you deal more damage for a while? It again feels like lazy design to just throw in a BUNCH of new stuff so you can say "we did so much cool stuff, look at us" without considering continuity. You could have accomplished MOST of what you added into the skill trees and kept a common theme of plausible realism with just some more thought. Some of the pointless poi chases could have had the guantlet tech added as incremental progression rewards. You could have done so much more. I loved the first game, and I WANT to love this game. But there is too much corners cut and lack of polish that I am constantly fighting to try and enjoy it. I'm going to finish it, but this may be the last game I buy or play from this studio. I'm too tired of all the cheap ♥♥♥♥ that's rushed out of the door for the sake of the execs and share holders to hurry up and get our money. I just want something that was built by people that care about their product. The list of studios I'm willing to entertain a purchase from grows ever smaller.
This is basically a huge PS5 Techdemo. The Story is horseshît, the Characters are shît and ugly and overall this Game is just quantity over quality.

This game feels like it expanded on everything the first game had, both the good and the bad. While it did make an even more beautiful and interesting map, it still felt like it gave a tame, watered down version of the themes in the fallout games. The story did also sorta jump the shark at the end, and the new weapons started to make the game less reliant on strategy, and more reliant on sheer dps. I am excited for the next game, but keep my expectations not too high.
One of the best stories in a video game or anywhere else that you will ever experience.
both zero dawn and forbidden west are two of my favourite games the imagination that's gone into creating them both they are just a pleasure to play really cannot wait for the third part open world fun that uses elemental bows and arrows amongst other weapons against robotic machines of all sizes what's not to love enjoy
