Horizon Forbidden West is a perfect example of a game made for casual players who just play through the main story on easy and don't care about anything else. The game looks absolutely gorgeous; the cutscenes and facial rendering, in particular, are flawless. However, the most important part of any game—the gameplay—is trash. The combat system is frustrating. Fighting multiple machines is total chaos. You spend most of your time stunned on the ground, running away, and frantically crafting ammo mid-dodge. This goes hand in hand with overcomplicated mechanics. The game overwhelms you with a massive pile of weapons, elements, and coils. The result is just annoying menu management that completely kills the flow. If you do side activities, you will completely overlevel. I got to a point where the main quest required level 30, but I was already level 50—and that was me trying to balance my progress with side content. Along with that comes a ton of skill points with nothing to spend them on. Most abilities are active and you can't use them all at once, which brings me back to constantly swapping things in the menu. All side quests are exactly the same: go there, turn on Focus, follow the tracks, kill the machines. Furthermore, the game gives you a false illusion of freedom. Everything has only one specific solution designed by the authors. This applies to finding collectibles as well (e.g., find that one interactive object in a massive complex just to move one step forward, and repeat). Aloy behaves completely differently than in the first game. She is arrogant, refuses any help, etc. Even though I understand her character development throughout the game, you spend most of your time playing as an unlikable protagonist. And the main storyline involving Far Zenith feels like an absurd sci-fi. It would have felt much more natural if the story had stayed grounded (literally).
Brilliant sequel that ups the quality in almost every way over the first game. A rich story with interesting characters and well expanded upon combat and exploration, particularly the enemy designs. I wouldn't skip the first game though since this picks up right where that left off, and the story here too sets up a sequel. I hope the eventual 3rd game comes to PC one day, but I can wait.
