This is my first game that is very castlevania-like even though I've never played any castlevania games before. I only have 2 issues with the game. First, the bosses are TANKY. and it's not like I'm not doing enough damage, I looked up people fighting bosses and I'm doing pretty similar damage. But it takes FOREVER to defeat some bosses. Second, the enemies do some insane contact damage. I think I've received more contact damage than actual attack dammage. Other than these two issues, I really don't have any big complains. The combat took some time to adjust to since there is no light/heavy attack or any combos that you can do mashing the two buttons. and since it's inspired by OG Castlevania I understand that. I also liked the music and voice acting, although I wish there were more cutscenes.
If you liked Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, then you will like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. It is a fantastic throwback to the classic playstyle, and overall, I really enjoyed my time with it. -Pros Smooth Combat: The gameplay is fluid, clean, and highly responsive. Massive Variety: There is a great selection of weapons, armor, and spells to experiment with. Smart Crafting System: The addition of crafting offers alternative ways to get top-tier equipment without endlessly farming for a single rare drop. Sale Price: I picked it up on sale for under $5, but I gladly would have paid more for the amount of content provided. Modern Graphics: It takes the classic gothic visual style and upgrades it with a beautiful modern flair. Custom Difficulty: The game features customizable settings so you can tailor the challenge to your liking. -Cons Weak Story: Much like its predecessors, the narrative falls flat and isn't very memorable. Simple Bosses: There are only a handful of boss fights, and most of them rely on fairly simple mechanics. Short & Low Replay Value: The core gameplay loop feels relatively short, and there isn't much incentive to replay it once you finish. Clunky Interface: The menus can feel awkward to navigate, especially when trying to manage the quests tab. Standard Price: However, the standard $40 retail price tag feels a bit steep for what you get, so it is best to wishlist it and wait for a discount. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night perfectly hits the nostalgic sweet spot for Symphony of the Night fans. Despite a few flaws in its story and UI, it is an absolute steal and a must play for any Metroidvania fan.
Music and art is fantastic, level design is good, enemy design is good, boss design is bad. The game could benefit from giving the player more movement enhancements during the playthrough. It feels like whenever you do actually get a movement enhancement that gets you to a new place in the castle, it doesn't actually feel as rewarding as other games. It feels like the use of movement upgrades to progress through the game wasn't emphasized enough in the level design. You will get a double jump and it will take you a while to even find a spot where it takes you somewhere new that's actually useful to you. Another thing that isn't rewarding is the boss fights. The first boss fight is a harsh skill check that leads you to assume the rest of the game's bosses will be of a similar calibre, but he ends up being the hardest boss in the game. If the first boss in your game is the hardest, that is bad game design. This stuff stops the game from being a masterpiece but it's still overall like a 7 or 8 out of 10 for me. This is why I say if you aren't an Igavania fan already this game might be kind of mid. The story is not anything worth caring about, it's all about the gameplay and exploring the castle. The cooking/crafting mechanic is alright, I find myself never having much ingredients, and potions are quite expensive and not very strong. I'm writing this review at the end of my first playthrough. I played the game entirely on the steam deck, it runs 60fps at 720p with epic graphics settings. I experienced a handful of game crashes in about 20 hours of gameplay. So overall it runs pretty well on the deck.
I tried a few times, but I just can't see what the appeal is to this game. Compared to good Metroidvanias (Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, aspects of Dead Cells) I don't see how this is considered "good" and not a cheap, misguided attempt at mimicking an old classic. Gameplay is slow and clunky. Enemies have a couple moves at most, many of them just float around at you. Some have moves but your only options to engage with them are to run in a direction, do a non-directional backstep, or a short slide. Most of these options aren't even necessary as you can backpedal or jump around everything. A lot of the combat seems to assume you take persistent damage here and there from the poor hitboxes, poor platforming, and slow attacks you swing (no moveset, just the one attack per weapon). Art direction is also just uninspired and ugly. You get some 2.5d versions of classics like bats, or those guys who huck an arcing bone, but then you have something like the floating pigs that just expand and stretch like old cgi test footage. Or the knight who revs his sword and just sort of points it at you. They're actively unpleasant to look at. Sound design is like an arcade fighting game (not really consistent with the rest of the soundtrack). Oh and you're constantly interrupted by upgrades you pick up from enemies (which are dropped based on rng) and as far as I can tell is how you get most powers/weapons. So you get to grind the same enemies however many times until you get the power of revving up a weed-hedger for yourself. I'm absolutely confused at how this is considered a faithful homage to a beloved classic and not like, the crappy ripoff relegated to some forgotten corner of an arcade. I also want to add that I was really hoping to enjoy this. I loved Blasphemous and I enjoyed the hell out of the challenge runs that were added to Blasphemous as a tie-in to this game.
ITS SO GOOD, THE SOUND TRACK IS GOD LIKE, THE GAMEPLAY, THE STORY, THE GRAPHIC I LOVE IT
