Astalon is a modern NES inspired Medroidvania. You control a party of heroes fighting through a demonic loop of death and resurrection, You will play as a warrior, a rogue, and a mage. Each character has a unique play style and abilities, and you have to switch between them to access different areas, and take on different enemies.
Astalon: Tears of the Earth is a decent metroidvania game. It looks and feels like a very old, retro side-scroller just based off of it's design, much like old NES games from back in the day. Even though I'm personally not that big of a fan when it comes to metroidvanias, I occasionally dive into my backlog and find hidden gems like this. Trust me, IF you're a fan of the genre you'll definitely appreciate this oldschool take on modern era of metroidvania games. The fact that you can control 3 characters considering all of them have their unique abilities that let you proceed through the map makes this game a very refreshing experience in the genre. On the other side, the game has it's flaws, level design might be too generic, characters move rather slow which can be somewhat frustrating considering some areas are quite far away in the game. The biggest issue for me which made me drop the game completely is the fact that you ALWAYS restart your character at the same place once you die. There's an option to save on a campfire which pretty much saves the progress, but still resets your position once you start again. This flaw that game developers left unchecked is diabolical. Considering everything, it's a decent metroidvania, but I doubt I'll ever play it again. 6.9/10
feather-touches the A button for 1ms -> counts as 3 inputs, skipping the first window of dialogue and starting the second if you're gonna put an awful half-second input delay in your menu navigation, at least put it in your text windows too
A decent metroidvania but a bit too old fashioned in looks and design for me. The extra game modes felt a bit unnecessary since they really didn't remix things much or was more satisfying than the base game. But yeah a decent time i suppose.
Spectacular metroidvania. A bit slow to get started but once the momentum picks up, the sense of progression is immensely satisfying. I sincerely hope there's a sequel to this one day because even after a 100% playthrough, I haven't had enough!
Mon coup de coeur Metroidvania mes enfants l'adore et avec un new game + ces clairement un jeux qui vaut son prix. J'adore
It's somewhat uncommon for me to actually beat a game these days, it's even more uncommon for me to play through a game from start to finish without playing anything else in between. There are a lot of "Metroidvanias" out there these days, and I've played quite a few - falling victim to unmet expectations as a result of the hype not being equal to the reality of the final product, this isn't one of those games. The game does have its flaws, and the decision to both limit healing and have death result in sending you back to the entrance of the tower will ensure the game doesn't click with everyone, but I still highly recommend giving it a try. What the game does well it does outstandingly well: exploration, map design, and visuals/art design.
An amazing dungeon crawler with enough postgame modes to keep you full for days.
Amazing game with a retro style but modern depth. Really hoping they expand on this world in future games, the characters aren't completely fleshed out but the nature of their environment and the characters' secrets are very intriguing.
