wonderful game, the gameplay feels so rewarding, the soundtrack should be put in a museum and you don't even need any previous knowledge of touhou to enjoy this game. googles "patchouli knowledge fat boobies"
I know absolutely nothing about Touhou, and even after playing I still don't know anything other than I know that I want to give Flan a hug. People had been recommending me this game for ages, and I can see why, it is genuinely a very good Metroidvania. For most of the game I thought its weakest point was the travel system, in particular where the portal gates were located, they felt incredibly odd, but once you reach the final area and have all your abilities unlocked, the placement begins to make sense. They make backtracking for collectibles easier, while making the first run through an area challenging. The game is very short, you can finish it under 4 hours. Which is imo a very good thing considering the difficulty the game poses. It has very engaging combat, particularly if you use the myriad special abilities you encounter throughout the game. The use of timestop in both combat and puzzle solving is also really well thought out, I found myself constantly using it throughout the entire game, it can really balance some of the enemies when you aren't fully accustomed to their attack patterns. Similarly, the game doesn't allow you to abuse the time stop too much, there are limits to how much you can move within it, as well as how many times you can attack. There are even certain attacks that can punish you for using time stop, and the game does a very good job color coding them. The music is fantastic, I could recognize quite a few tracks as remixes from Touhou, where from? I'm not sure, but I knew they were connected to the series, and they sure as hell banged. Story wise... Uh... Torturing cute maid I guess? I'm sure this story makes a lot more sense to someone who is actually versed into the lore of the series. For me it was just two sisters having a misunderstanding and the maid gets caught inbetween. (You are the maid.) Shoutout to the Reimu fight. It had me sweating my controller lmao After I beat her I went to check out videos of how other people beat her... I was lv14, the people in the videos were lv40+ They were doing over triple my damage, so I suggest you don't just spend hours farming if you want the fight to be a challenge. For an optional final boss, I'd rather her be that difficult than a boss that dies in 2 damn minutes like in those videos.
Better than Hollow Knight
Touhou Luna Nights It has gorgeous and clean pixel art graphic, solid soundtrack, unique and interesting time stop mechanic, and many beloved touhou characters in it. For a metroidvania title its a bit too linear and also quite short, can be beaten in around 6 to 12 hour depending on your skill and playstyle. If you're a touhou fan, you will love this game. But even if you don't know anything about touhou, this game is still a great and enjoyable metroidvania game.
Throughout my time with this game, I am amazed at just how many good things this game does as a smaller-scale fangame that’s derivative from the Touhou Series. This game blends the elements from the mainline games with the metroidvania formula so well it creates such an interesting and unique gameplay experience that you don’t really find anywhere else in the genre.
The Gameplay
You play as Sakuya Izayoi, the head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and with her ability to manipulate time with her pocket watch, she can turn the tides of combat into her favor. In this game, your basic attacks cost MP and she throws out her signature knives, and this meter slowly recovers over time, or you can opt to graze the enemy by standing close to them without touching or getting hit. This creates a sense of risk reward to where you might sometimes need to purposely get close to the enemy to be able to continue dealing damage. Where the combat and exploration gets pretty interesting is when you gain the ability to both slow down time, and stop time completely. Slowing down time gives you more opportune time to avoid attacks or navigate tricky sections easier, and stopping time allows you to pause everything for a brief moment and reposition and set up your attacks. Any attacks you use in your time-stop state consume the time gauge, and the attacks will stay on screen until the time becomes unstopped. The way it was implemented is super satisfying and the trick never gets old. While this sounds broken in concept, the game is pretty balanced around it, but this game won’t be the hardest thing you ever played probably, which is not a bad thing.
The Story (or lack thereof)
As for the story, there basically is nothing substantial, just character interactions between Sakuya and the other Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (EoSD) cast of girls from Touhou 6. You’ll find familiar faces through characters like Meiling, Marisia, Patchouli, and Remilia for example along with some other cameos. Even if you have no knowledge of the characters from EoSD or what happens, you can honestly still fully enjoy it as besides the characters nothing really will confuse you without having the proper context for anything.
The Music
As for the music, the soundtrack mainly features remixes of stage and boss themes from EoSD which sort of fit more inline with the locations they are used in and fit the metroidvania style. While the original Touhou tracks are iconic and hard to beat, these remixes are still really solid on their own, and highlight just how good Touhou music is just in general.
Potential Downside & Final Thoughts
The only downside for this game is just how short it is. I wish it went on even for a little bit longer, but I guess the flipside is that nothing in this game truly overstays its welcome. However I do believe the game does a lot within this short game length to really stand out and offer a unique experience for something in the metroidvania genre with Sakuya’s timestop ability. Overall, just a solid game that even people who aren’t super into Touhou can enjoy. While short, it provides a lot of fun gameplay elements blending in Touhou mechanics from the mainline bullet hell games with a metroidvania, mainly the time manipulation being the main standout and highlight of this game.
Simply peak one of the most polished indie games I've ever played with mechanics that seem simple but have a lot going on under the surface. It's somewhat short but with the addition of the extra stage it ends up feeling just the right lenght and most importantly the game is quality from beginning to end. The only thing you could call a downside is that by metroidvania standards the exploration is pretty weak, I'd even hesitate to call this a metroidvania since there's barely any exploration or mandatory backtracking, there are character upgrades but you'll get all of them by simply playing, exploring is mostly to get upgrades to stats or ocasionally a new sub-weapon. In a sense its more of a 2D platformer with 1 gigantic stage. Personally I didn't find this to be a problem at all just be aware of this going in in case you're a combatslop vs explorationslop metroidvania player.
Adoro quando a minha empregada começa a parar o tempo e a atirar facas e outras cenas. Bué fixe o jogo.
音乐好听,玩法创新,难度不高,纯恶心人,总体评价良
A good metroidvania with unique, well-crafted mechanics. It's a short title, but well worth the investment for fans of either the Touhou series or the metroidvania genre.
I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love this game and the sountrack is amazing as well. Heavily reccomended for those who are wanting to get into the Touhou series and also for those who enjoy Touhouvania style games. It's decently challenging and always gets harder as the levels progress, so I always find myself coming back to it. It was worth every penny.
