Tremendous downgrade from the first game. I loved the first game and 100% it on veteran difficulty; so I expected an equally good maybe even better game with the sequel. Oh boy was I wrong! Whats wrong with it? Well, aside from the beautiful pixel graphics; which arguably looks even better than in the first game: EVERYTHING! I didn't even get further than the options menu before I noticed a downgrade from the first game. There's no f@kkin volume control. Literally unbelievable. The first one had a volume control; every normal game in history have a volume control in the options menu. Then when I begin the game, it's in slo-mo.. and I'm completely baffled why the game is stuck in 30FPS. What? Eventually I find out that the only way this poorly programmed game can run in 60FPS is if I put it in windowed mode. As soon I put it in fullscreen mode it autlocks into 30FPS and gets into unplayable slo-mo mode. What a joke! How come the first game had none of these issues but this one has? Did you fire the senior devs for some incompetent DEI hires or what? Alright; so two bad things already; and I haven't even gotten to try out the game yet. When I eventually figure out that this game is only playable in windowed mode; I realize something else that has degraded heavily from the first game: THE MUSIC. The first game had a legendary soundtrack; this one, every track is at best mediocre and often just a discordant headache inducing disaster to listen to (Stage 5 for example). Everything from the bosses, the new characters, and the level design themselves just feels and plays worse than the first one in every regard, by the time I reached stage 5; an incredibly poorly designed and tedious level with cheap pitfall deaths everywhere I just turned game off and decided to jump on steam to write this review to PUNISH these f@kkers for what they've done to this game and to me!!! Wasting my f@kkin time and money!!!
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 is a fun game, but it may not be a game you actually complete. I'm going to tell you a story to illustrate why. Back in the bygone year of 2008 Capcom released Devil May Cry 4 and made the bold decision to make the game by building half a game and then making the player do it twice. It was not super well received because despite the deep gameplay and multiple characters going through the same level twice is kinda boring. This lesson was clearly not learned by Inti. This is a 2D Castlevania style platformer, so not wildly high in depth at the best of time and yet -despite this- in order to see everything you have to go through the game three (3!) times. Two of which are with the same set of characters sans one. That is ridiculous. Pick it up on sale and play it until you get bored, then either stop or download a save or something, because if you're anything like me playing through the same game 3 times will drain the goodwill right out of you.
Inti knows how to make bangers but their bad games can be offensively bad. This is one of those bad games and my god it is cancer. I get that they tried to amp up the difficulty in this game but the way they did it is by putting cheap instant death all across the map. Hachi feels terrible to control too and despite that you'll need it to traverse various parts of the map. Blaster Master Zero also amped up difficulty with each entry but they feel fair because it does not have all of these cheap death traps that throws you far back if you died. Another problem is certain enemies are extremely difficult or downright impossible to beat if you don't have the right character with the right weapon in your party which makes it a lot more frustrating because this definitely wasn't an issue in the previous game. Bad game. Buy it on sale and just play it on casual anything harder than that is just troll difficulty which is beatable once you pulled all your hairs out in frustration and memorise the level layout entirely because you can't even let a single character die if you don't want to torture yourself.
This game is a sequel to Curse of the Moon and it is way better than the first one. The game has three chapters where chapter 2 are just remixed stages with harder boss battles. While chapter 3 gives you more playable characters and a bonus stage, I think for what its worth, yes definitely pick this up if you are into NES or classic Castlevania. The final sequence was especially cool!
I really wanted to love this game, it's Castlevania inspired, it's a sequel to a great game, it's got local co-op, great art style, decent music, big bosses, so what happened? I'll tell you what. Bad game design and total lack of restraint from the director. This game throws everything at you plus the kitchen sink. 7 playable characters, many with broken abilities that trivialize much of the game, but if you don't use them the game is so poorly designed you'll never survive without it. Rooms are filled to the brim with fast moving enemies that hit hard as trucks. Pitfalls everywhere, icy platforms, moving platforms, low gravity, a ton of ♥♥♥♥♥ that doesn't belong in a stiffly controlled retro platformer. You can't dodge in this game on account of how slow and stiff you are, your jumping is rigid with a fixed arc, this works in classicvania because the levels and challenges were designed around those restrictions. That's not the case here. You just get bounced around and eventually fall in a pit before you can really do anything. That includes some of the bosses too. If it weren't for cheese tactics, they'd be impossible to kill without simply trading hits. There are still some attacks I don't know how to avoid taking damage. But as mentioned before, some sub-weapons are broken and you can melt bosses quickly before you run out of health. The game is a sloppy chaotic mess. And I suppose exploiting the poorly balanced abilities is the intended strat, and that's a shame. The worst part of the game is that when one character dies it kicks you all the way back to a checkpoint, even during boss fights. This is ridiculously stupid and leads to pace-breaking frustration for no reason whatsoever. When you are sent back to the checkpoint all your characters will have less health, so you basically gotta burn a life just to respawn with full health and attempt the boss again. It's ironic they call the casual mode casual when it doesn't do anything to reduce difficulty, it just gives you infinite lives which you're gonna need. And reduces knock back which is also important given the stages and swarm of enemies everywhere. Clearly they "balanced" the game around the co-op with 7 characters to swap between and abuse their broken mechanics. They were probably hoping for a "co-op chaos" kind of fun, but let's face the reality, most of us are not convincing anyway to play this game with us. Solo play is how most will experience the game and as it stands it is so poorly designed for solo play, which is why I give it a full blown DO NOT RECOMMEND. There are better classicvania style games out there. Check out Infernax, it's pretty fun and quite faithful to the classics.
honnastly didn't like this game as much as the first. probably because its harder. but its still a good game
