Absolutely too many random encounters, little to no overarching plot, nothing ties these people together nor do they really interact with each other at all. I spent entirely too much time wondering what the point of what I was doing was, and waiting for some grand "aha" moment where everything comes together...and it never comes. It's just more disjointed side-stories. Edit: Played the whole game. Did the "secret" boss that ties all the plots together. Still ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Still terrible pacing. ABSOLUTELY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ storytelling. I don't understand how this got so popular. Were people really starved for a pixel art JRPG on consoles? I don't see what made this such a big deal when it was released. I guess I was expecting something like Secret of Mana 3 (Trials of Mana) where you had to select a party out of the 8 and their plot lines sometimes intertwine with each other and they interact. This...so far...is not that. It's just...a bunch of random side stories. Maybe if they focused on ONE story, they would have a game...but this is just...me spending hours waiting for the "real" game to begin only to find out this is it. This could work if the world was interesting and well designed...but it isn't. Actually the world feels extremely shallow and amateurishly put together. Languages and accents, culture and even technology whiplash wildly from cities just a few feet from each other to the point that it doesn't feel even remotely believable. It feels like you're wandering around a Disney or Universal park where you walk 3 feet and you're in desert town only to walk a few more feet to be in the frozen north. It feels VERY contrived and just makes the world feel small and "video gamey." I'm going to keep playing it to get my money's worth, but I somehow doubt the game will magically turn around.
I've only completed the first chapters so far, but from what I've heard this doesn't change much: The stories differ a _lot_ in terms of quality. You have some stories that are super poorly written and which you will absolutely not care about, and you have others (hello Primrose) which make it seem like the devs had just remembered that they can actually do something interesting. However, even when a story segment is good, it only lasts for (at most) an hour at a time. For me personally, this is rather unsatisfying, as that doesn't give me enough time to connect to the characters. That being said, the visuals, the gameplay and the music are all fantastic. They are what make me want to play this game recently. However, I do not think that that's worth the hefty price, only if you get it with a good discount.
I read the reviews, saw people talking about the lackluster story, decided to give it a shot either way. It's been about 20 hours of gameplay, and I just don't think I'll return to it. Here's what I enjoyed about it, first! 1. Gameplay Honestly the combat is fun, I enjoy the animations, the type of combat they made in this game is actually fun. With each character feeling unique with their own type of gimmick that helps the player succeed. Although it does get grindier later, in general I'd say the combat is probably one of the best things to this game. 2. Graphics The art design for this game is what really made me so curious, it looks amazing and fun, which it is! I think I've never loved a game's art design this much before. Normally people praise a game's "realism" but for this game, it's just an insane art design that looks gorgeous. From night to day, shady trees in a forest to a sandy sparkly beach, it's actually been so nice to journey 3. Music The music in this game is amazing, each story having it's own style, as well as biomes and bosses. That, mixed with it's graphics make it such a beautiful game!! 4. Characters Despite some of my gripes, the characters do feel genuinely unique! Aesthetically and design wise Now despite these things I love about the game, I cannot finish it, and here's why: 1. Game Design Now idk if you've ever been driving, and see someone else and wonder "wonder where they're going?" or "what's their life story?" and I think this game really takes that thought process and turns it into a game. The way they designed it is that there are several people doing their own separate stories and others just are along for the ride. Honestly the concept isn't a bad idea, but the way they did it was bad. You are constantly starting a new story after getting motivated by one you just started. It's like replaying the same, obnoxious, cutscene because you lost the boss fight and have to watch it again to try and fight the boss and hopefully win. It doesn't feel super rewarding. Once you get slightly invested into one story, you're forced by their leveling system to progress through other characters story, kind of rewriting your focus and motivation. 2. Story Surprise, the story feels bad. Primrose is definitely the best from the start, but then others like Ophilia, which just felt me more confused and pissed off by their lazy writing than I did in any other game I've played in a long time. Ultimately this game's weakness IS the story, hands down. Their writing for Ophilia's introduction story sucked so much I genuinely HATED it. Now here's the thing, they have legendary voice actors and actresses. Ophi's VA is Cristina Valenzuela, who voices Riven(LoL), Velvet Crowe (tales of Berseria), Cyberpunk, Bleach, Pokemon, countless anime dubs from 2005 onwards. She's a fkin legend. They set her up for FAILURE. She over voices her lines, because I think they recorded everyone separately, so she sounds like she's just terribly overdoing it compared to everyone else. It is also terribly written, their family dynamic of Ophi feeling like she never had a dad, yet that dude was voicing his love the ENTIRE time, yet cares way more about her sister, who's grieving, while her loving "absent" dad is dying in the next room over.. felt like someone who was an only child tried to write a family dynamic, it's terrible. Ophi's story was rough, but I could oversee that, if I was still invested. Everytime I get into a story they've made, they make you watch another 15-20 minute story of someone new, which really just feels bad. 3. Their World Now their world does feel different, with different biomes and such, but I think in general it's just battle simulators. Each map has a few sections between city to city, each section has a different level, which isn't scaled by the player, so it's more along the lines of a linear open world story, limiting where you can go in order to direct/forcing you to collect other party members. It's kind of making you waste time to gain levels so you can eventually progress through the first character's story after starting 3 others.. Because of these, I just feel like it's a game I have no investment, no emotional value that I am getting out of it, it's all shallow story, mixed with linear paths and battle grinding city to city to restart a new campaign in the middle of my other ones.
Frustratingly dull, this game has all the allure of a stylized flowchart. I struggled against my better judgement to find value in the individual stories. On completion of my first character arc (60+ hours in taking my time, progressing each of the other 7) the un-skippable credits rolled, and it was clear this game goes nowhere. Without a really cohesive story the grind becomes the focus of the game, and unfortunately, the grind is only moderately entertaining at best. I'd falsely hoped that whatever resources they saved in defaulting to the pixel art graphics would be redistributed to developing battle complexity, but every encounter followed a simple variation of the same formula. I rarely leave reviews, but unfortunately this game just left me feeling scammed. How do you charge $60 for this? I've played too many great games to lower my expectations to Octopath Traveler. While the reviews I'd read beforehand weren't perfect, the sea of positivity surrounding these games is grossly misleading.
I thought this game was stupid when it first came out. Many years later and I find myself very much enjoying it on Steam Deck. Safe to say, this game is an awesome intro to JRPGs. Sometimes games just don't find you at the right time. Glad I gave it a second chance.

After 6h there is no overarching story, no common goals, no character-motivations to travel together, not even interactions between party members. How did they unlearn the basics of making a compelling RPG? The gameplay itself is fine, but definitely not good enough to solo-carry.
