I feel like this game was trying to tell me something but my brain blocked it out due to how scared I was from the body horror. Other than that the gameplay was fun at some points I liked the part where I got sucked off but I don't know if it was for pleasure or pain? 7.8/10 its a one and done type of game
cool
Scorn is an intriguing yet short game. The gameplay primarily features the playable character walking through Ridley Scott-esque alien-like environments running machines on biomass with puzzles and some combat to compensate along the way. The main gimmick of the game is the denial of information and the utilization of the foreign environment, minimalist UI, and shifting locations to play with this built-in sense of confusion (similar to how TUNIC handles its information parsing if you're familiar). The combat overwhelmingly feels like a slog and tacked on in a bad way (the movement and game system feels built for walking/exploring not shooting), but the puzzles were at least well put together and a refreshing synthesis of the overarching theme of information denial with tried-and-tested puzzle design. Scorn plays as if in development one of the first things the developers realized was that they could make these incredible surrealist alien architectures and landscapes. This on its own is fine, but the secondary features (puzzles and combat) felt almost like an afterthought and represent some of the lower points in the game, and frankly felt more like they were attempting to pad the playtime of the game rather than add to the overall experience of confusion. In this manner some of the puzzles (mainly the stone egg puzzle in the first section, and dropping the elevator/sphere around halfway) detracted from the experience. There were, however, several puzzles that did a good job reinforcing the aesthetic (the pyramid maze in particular)--the game just wasn't at its strongest when it was offering puzzles and didn't do anything *entirely* original from a puzzling perspective. The combat felt clunky in that I couldn't tell if my first weapon was hitting or not (because it's technically melee and the game's hitboxes aren't great) and every enemy barely registered me hitting them. You have a limited amount of ammo for anything that isn't the melee weapon as well as a finite amount of heals, and many of the enemies take 4-5 shots to kill them. The enemies can do 1/4 to 1/3 (or more) of your health depending on the enemy so running past them isn't viable either. The overall poor combat system is further hamstringed by the lack of saving/checkpoints which make any incidental deaths to enemies all the more flummoxing and feels like a runtime padder once again unfortunately. The one boss built for the game being reused right after itself didn't help matters in this regard either. Narratively speaking: I don't see there being much of a narrative barring the final section of the game where the main character arrives at an alien temple and is crucified in an obvious metaphor, however, what follows afterwards leads me to believe, similar to the combat and puzzles, the story was sort of an afterthought. That all being said: I did actually enjoy my time with Scorn. It was fun and really unique and interesting seeing Dali-coded alien environments and Scorn does a good job playing with the tension and release of information. I managed to finish and get all but 1 achievement in approximately 8 hours (though I was playing slowly). The game runs well on Steam Deck with no performance issues to note. Since the game is not as recent it does make the pricetag hard to swallow, however it is occasionally on sale and I'd recommend picking it up when it is. 7/10
If you have a strong stomach and enjoy games where you have no idea what you're supposed to do, then Scorn is perfect for you ! The sight of blood usually makes me sick, yet I adored this game ! 10/10, I wish I could erase my memory and experience it for the first time again.

this game is literally impossible to play on ultrawide resolution. i play on 5120x1440; the game auto defaults to some heavily stretched resolution upon launching. I click past "PRESS ANY KEY" and am greeted with the brightness screen. My cursor is unable to reach the slider at the bottom of the screen, effectively preventing me from playing the game. UPDATE: i used the alt+enter command to shrink the window so i can progress
