Good game
Neir Replicant is generally a 6.5/10. This game is very conflicting. It has dated mechanics holding it back but also has great lore and sections that are fun. Reminds me of classical 90's/2000's RPG's (Game came out in 2010 but the Version 1.22...... was released in 2021). I treated this as a pseudo remaster due to the dev team adding more combat, story content and redoing music and visuals. I will limit spoilers as much as possible. Pros----- ---Music: The first thing I noticed was the music in the tutorial/prologue and the first few starting zones. I thought the soundtrack was very good and atmospheric. I usually don't give many points to the soundtrack in games but this was above average (sound design and music). Big Plus!!!! ---Voice Actors: I thought the performances (English VA's) were very well done, giving characters strong emotions and vibrant displays of range (Mainly the Main character and The Book). Side characters such as Kainé, Yonah and Emil were ok slightly above average. Some random NPC's also have decent voice overs. ---Lore: I looked up lore and history regarding the world AFTER I FINSHINED the game. The lore, history and, world building is AMAZING!!!!!! Great unique idea for a story as well as having interesting complications due to the history of "events (predating the game). Will get into this more in the Con section. Cons----- ---Storytelling: Why is this here if I loved the Lore/World building so much. Well, during my playthrough, the way the story is delivered, is horrible. This is due to the fact that after the prologue, there is a 1200 year time skip. Cool, nothing wrong so far. This adds mystery. I wonder what happened during those years. Upon starting the "main" game, you realize you are playing the same character from the prologue after 1200 years. Wait, WHAATT? Awesome, more questions. I'm intrigued now, this is a great setup. A few more mysteries are shown. What are these monsters known as Shades? Where did they come from? Why are they attacking the towns and people? What is the Black Scrawl? What happened for the last 1200 years? The sad part is, many of these questions don't get answered until the last 5 minutes in the game if at all in game. There are some hints about potential answers throughout the main quest (healing/curing Yonah) but they are only hints. I don't think it is good story telling to never tell the player some of the most hard hitting question until the very end of the game, especially if they are posed AT THE VERY START. Some questions do get answered like, What's up with Emil?(My god that face) Why is Kainé wearing bandages on half of her body? How far will the main character go to save Yonah? AGAIN, I am torn. The history of the world events and implications of such, are Amazing!!!!! and Phenomenal!!!!! I feel like they tell the player too late. I think the ending would hit a lot harder emotionally if the player gets some answers half way through (IE What the shades? What are replicants? and Why they exist?). This would give understanding to the primary antagonist and flips the script on the ending (ending A) causing the player to question the correct course of action. (I did look up the other endings after I finished) Here is a list of a some questions that mainly get answered outside the game but are really really cool!!!!!! (maybe I missed critical explanations in game ... I did) Why are you playing the same character from the prologue? (kind of gets answered) What is the point of the Sealed Verses? ( found outside of game) What is the point and history of the Books? (kind of answered but mainly outside of game) What's up with the twins? (kind of answered, more info outside of game) What is the Black Scrawl? (answer outside of game) Why are the shades attacking humans (kind of answered but mostly found outside of game) What happened in the 1200 year time skip (kind of answered but found outside of game) Side note, I found out that some info is explained in the Gestalt Reports (I missed a few). This leaves a different problem, Why is this critical knowledge able to be missed so easily? JUST PUT THIS IN MY FACE GAME! PLEASE! Stop hiding the greatness. ---Strange Semi transparent bars on top and bottom of screen during cutscenes. This cannot be disabled and I believe community members say it was done intentionally for a cinematic perspective. Ok idea but give the option to turn these off. I noticed them every cutscene and they brought me out of the moment. ---Auto-Saves: Why is this not an option??? lost a couple hours because the game decided to crash?!?!?!? This came out in 2021 and this is not even an option. ---Quests: I did a lot of quests in the first half of the game ~10-15 and most if not all side quests were kind of boring/grindy. I understand that this is side content but most quests were not that interesting. Go buy 5 fish for me, deliver this to someone in another town, bring me 10 Goat hides. In the second half I did a couple and they were very similar so I stopped with side content. I know that some side quests are ok/good but most were not. If these quests were more interesting I would have done more in the second half. ---Difficulty: I played on normal. Most mobs don't seem balanced. They seem to either have a million health or 100 with no in-between (even some bosses). Also some creatures do way too much damage, near 1-shotting. Why is the Defense stat even in the game?!? Small Cons------- ---Walking Trial: There should not be a trial (barren temple room 3) where the goal is to walk slowly while dodging projectiles (I like the idea but the fact that the player can't lock to walking is bad. A couple tries was just moving the game stick a tiny bit too much, bam instant failure). This is not good game design. Good idea but i think bad implementation. ---Fast Travel: Why is fast travel unlocked in the second half of the game. Kind of annoying considering a lot of earlier quests are deliver/Fetch quests (run to X, run to Y, run to Z, quest complete). ---Contrasting Style: Some parts give the impression of cool battle sections (good hype music) but then throw slow block puzzles at the player. Looking at you Lost Temple Part 2. WHY?!? ---Self Spoilers: In the later half of the game, a NPC tells the player that the final boss is in some sort of "castle". BUT this is at the same time that the overall story is about finding said main antagonist. (it is explained later why said NPC knows but, it gave me pause in the moment breaking pacing) ---Junk Heap: First time there was ok. The next few times I though were horrible. Annoying to get to, annoying enemies, annoying map layout, annoying bomb mechanic. Also, PLEASE ADD A BIT MORE DIRECTION where the Robot is that "killed someone". (second half of game) Bugs------ Tabbing out of the application can cause it to crash (not sure what causes it but only sometimes) Overall, the game is middle of the road. The story/lore is AMAZING! (once I learned the history I thought it was great). The Story telling is very subpar, this really SUCKS. Being a story rich RPG, having storytelling low but the story high is a big let down. DON'T GET ME WRONG. Once you know what's up/happening, the story is GREAT. The game does not tell the player in a good way often leaving critical world knowledge (Gestalt Report 1-11) being able to be missed or skipped. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes a good story but give them a cavate of really finding hidden reports and then some of it will make sense (then read some wikkis for utter greatness for the 10/10 experience). I'm excited to see where Automata takes the story after hearing it is generally better than Replicant.
