fantastic story. great set of characters. banger soundtrack. (unfortunately?) this is a yako taro project and it's also tedious, by design. it's far from the most egregious project he has his name attached to but there's some tediousness here, even if this remake alleviates some of them, mostly in regard to the combat. you'll need to do several playthroughs, probably look up a bit of info to figure out how to get the full set of endings. none of that part of the game is particularly exciting to do. this is not exactly an unpopular stance even if people don't bring it up but i still feel it needs to be said. still worth plowing through it to experience the story? probably. maybe. i'm not the boss of you. with all that aside, not a fantastic pc port - rather short on a lot of technical settings that feel like they should be there and even if it runs fine i can't help but think it could have used a little bit more attention of that front. it's serviceable and nothing else past that.
the prologue (first 15 minutes) is great. then, after that, feels like just quest grinding, going back and forth from the house to the library - every day :/ Nier Automata is a much better game.
I think you are doing a disservice to yourself to not play this and/or Automata. Fun combat and a story actually worth giving a ♥♥♥♥ about. Maybe just skip some of the side quests. As I grow older, this has become one of my favorite franchises. Please make another one.

I honestly can’t describe how much fun I’m having in this game. I’ve been doing all these random side quests, like catching 10 rare fish, delivering mail for a mailman with an injured leg, and finding an old man’s lost dog. I’m just avoiding the main story because I never want this journey to end.
NieR Replicant holds a special place in my heart, being the first game that broke me on a level that no other form of media has. NieR is a flawed masterpiece, and that shows through its aged gameplay mechanics and constant backtracking. But beneath those imperfections lies one of the most tragic and beautiful stories I’ve ever experienced. It’s a story of love, sacrifice, and the extreme lengths someone will go through to save the person they love most. There’s a segment where you spend nearly 40 minutes simply reading white text on a black screen, yet the way the story and dialogue are delivered makes it so captivating that I was excited to continue reading, and it ended up being one of my favorite portions of the game. What truly elevates this game, though, is the OST. Nearly every track is filled with beautiful vocals backed by haunting melodies. There were multiple times when I stopped myself from finishing off a boss just so I could listen to the music a little bit longer. The journey starts slow, sometimes even monotonous. It may feel arduous when you're tasked with running back and forth through the limited zones. The story takes time to unfold, and you will be confused and feel possibly repelled by the narrative, but you have to trust me when I say it's worth it. This game is a work of art and has pushed forth the way a story could be told in the gaming medium to a new level. You're required to replay through the main story several times in order to unlock all endings and see characters' perspectives and proper conclusions, but it is worth pushing through the slog that is the outdated, repetitive hack-and-slash gameplay, as it truly is the greatest video game story I have ever seen. 10/10 — my favorite story game of all-time, so many tears
