:NO SPOILER: I played NieR : Automata for the first time when I was around 13y old and i hated it, i tought the idea of replaying the game three times to understand the full story was terrible so i decided to give it up when i didnt even finished completly the first run. I decided to gave it one last chance and it was a really good shot. The game’s greatest strength is undoubtedly its atmosphere and its music, the feeling of walking across the city ruins while listening to the soundtrack is indescribable. The combat system is very fluid and the possibility to cancel every attack with the dodge makes it really responsive and fun even after hours of gameplay. The real problem of the fights against the biomachines is the lack of challenge if the game is played at normal difficulty, after ony 10 hours playing the player is already able to get power ups that makes him quite powerful. Another big problem are the fetch quests, 90% of those quests force the player to go to point A, then to point B, and then back to A. The problem isn’t with their structure – because you could simply skip them – but with the fact that, if left unresolved, they prevent the player from appreciating and exploring that vast world. Players shouldn’t be put off by the fact that they have to play through the game three times, as each playthrough is different and delves deeper into a simple – and perhaps at times predictable – but well-told story. Before playing the player should at least know the story of Nier Replicant to understand what happened before the events of Nier Automata. Nier Automata is far from being a 10/10 game, and it is not a game that should be played by everyone because of its structure and the way events are narrated. But the world that Yokotaro has built is incredible in its imperfection, the biomachines are characterised in a lovley way, the soundtracks are unforgettable and the atmospheres are breath taking.
