You will never go on a journey like the journey you go on in Dark Souls. This is a game where a normal undead nobody goes on the quest to kill the gods themselves (or what's left of them) driven by nothing but the will to not let their fire flicker out. In the opinion of someone who has played every Dark Souls game multiple times and even Elden Ring, this is the best souls game, and the one I consider the most replayable. I mean my hours speak for themselves.
It's the kind of game where a normal person would say, 'Why am I doing this torture to myself?' and uninstall it within the first hour. Light the bonfire, we still have a long way to go to die! Praise the Sun!
This was my first Souls game, and I would say it was well worth it. I had never played any difficult games before Dark Souls 1, and it prepared me for my journey ahead as a gamer to tackle even greater challenges. After Dark Souls 1, I went on to play every Souls game. Talking about the game itself, it has some of the best level design you'll ever find. Everything connects with each other so well. You might not find the boss fights that challenging, but reaching each boss is a challenge on its own because the mobs will chase you all the way to the fog door, haha. The lore is amazing too, and interacting with the NPCs and getting to know them makes the journey even more special for me. It's a masterpiece, easily a 10/10.
Dark Souls is one of those rare games that genuinely earns the word "timeless" and this remaster proves it. Coming back to it after years away from my original playthrough I expected some nostalgia goggles to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting. They weren't necessary. The game still holds up remarkably well against modern standards both in how it plays and how it's designed. The interconnected world design here is something genuinely unique to this entry even compared to its own sequels. The way areas loop back on themselves, the shortcuts that suddenly reframe the whole map in your head, the sense of place that builds as you piece together how everything connects it's still completely incredible and honestly nothing else in the series since including Dark Souls 3 or Elden Ring, has quite matched it. That said it's hard not to notice the ways the sequels improved on the formula. Having played DS3 and Elden Ring certain things about the original feel a little dated or lacking by comparison, whether that's the combat feel, pacing or some quality of life elements that later entries introduced. It doesn't take away from the experience but it's a noticeable gap when going back. Even with that in mind, this is still an incredible game and a great reason to revisit Lordran. If you've played the sequels and never gone back to where it all started, this remaster is a great excuse to do exactly that.
Finally decided to give Dark Souls a try after finishing Elden Ring. Going back to the roots of the FS souls games is refreshing and just different enough to modern souls. Felt the age of the game but that didn't matter to the overall experience of the game. The game was fantastic and beautiful!
A honest to goodness certified classic. Easily one of my favorite games. It might not be the best of all time but it still holds up even today. It truly stands well against time and I always look forward to playing it in some fashion
This is one of those games that I feel everyone should play at least once. That being said, after ripping off the rose-tinted glasses glued to everyone's face following this game's legacy it's full of jank and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ moments. It's glaringly obvious where the game had its corners cut/ areas that feel that they were never finished. People who talk about "enemy spam" in later games clearly never got to the Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith where the enemies are shamelessly copy pasted, as if people wouldn't think that 7 Taurus Demons facing the same cardinal direction, or the 20 morbillion lower undead dragon halves looks out of place. This game also feels like it gives the illusion of "build choice". Good luck doing anything except swinging a greatsword, because the targeting for any ranged options are horrid, and the lock-on only works if the enemy is 5 feet in front of you. The lack of defensive or utility magic, combined with the inability to reinforce your catalysts, except for the pyromancy flame, makes any type of dedicated magic build, a waste of time. Oh, and you can't respec your build lmao. Not only do you fight enemies, but you also fight the terrible camera controls and the environment. Over half of the game contains areas where it's enclosed and the camera is stroking its ♥♥♥♥ against a wall and disorienting you in the process, don't even get me started on the Input Buffering. Getting to the boss fights always ends up being way harder than the boss itself in this game, each one maybe sporting like 3-4 situational attacks that you can easily exploit them into spamming. PvP isn't even really worth griping on (that much) , the game barely feels like it was intended to support players fighting each other with the bad latency and desync that will plague this entire series. It just devolves into rolling and strafing to see who can win a backstabbing competition. The subpar gameplay aside, everything else about this game is great, the lore, the setting, the music. I love the characters and the world they've built. The cryptic nature of this series will always be interesting and fun to explore. This is game series I've grown up with and is my autistic special interest that defined a chunk of my personality and I will forever love it in spite of its flaws and downsides. All of that together, you can't be a gamer and not have tried Dark Souls, it has left its legacy that will be seen in video games until time loses meaning. Don't believe the larpers, Dark souls 2 sweep.
