The TL;DR
The Witcher 1 is not a masterpiece, and it hasn't aged perfectly. But it is an absolute gem of a game oozing with the earnest passion of a small studio swinging for the fences. If you can stomach the 2007-era jank, you are in for one of the best narrative experiences in RPG history.

The Bad

Combat: The rhythm-based combat is a nightmare during gang fights. You will get stun-locked, you will get stabbed in the back during incredibly long kill animations (zero i-frames here), and you will realize that Aard is the only Sign worth using.
Backtracking & Environment: Do yourself a massive favor and download the one and only movement speed mod. The backtracking is brutal, especially in the Chapter where you're required to explore the Swamp. The Swamp ecosystem is a miserable gauntlet of endless Drowners and horribly overpowered, poison-spitting plants that will make you question your sanity. Oh, and always carry a torch. The crypts are pitch black and you can only make enough cat potions for a trip or two.
So much jank. The menu-ing is jank, you can only interact with anything in your inventory if Geralt is idle which is a slog during fights, the execution animations are a dice roll and you better hope it's a short animation sequence, the romance cards are kinda bizzare, why can't my geralt jump over a tiny fence or a small ledge, I despise Shani's greedy ass landlady, everybody looks the same, the boss in chapter 1 is a right of passage kind of thing because of how insanely unbalanced it is, endless loading screens, sometimes clunky dialogue, and the unexplained top down angle used by a negative amount of people.

The Good

Atmosphere: Immaculate. It has this gritty, moody, early-2000s PC aesthetic that feels strangely comforting and perfectly nails the tone of the Witcher universe.
Narrative: Top-tier. The game doesn't hold your hand with moral dilemmas. You make choices based on practicality or your own worldview, and the game makes you live with the consequences much later. Siding with the Scoia'tael over the Order drastically shifts the flavor of your journey, and romantic choices actually carry heavy, heartbreaking weight.
Worldbuilding: Masterful political worldbuilding. Plus, the final twist regarding a specific character is an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that recontextualizes everything you did.

Verdict
Play it for the incredible story, the moody vibes, and to see where CDPR started. Just be ready to cheese a few boss fights and run for your life in the swamp.
It is very dated, but still has a really good story to tell, I've always enjoyed the witcher world
easily a great game, even though it made me rage so much, i regret those rages, i recommend it to anyone, its just a great game and it didnt age.
