Coming from someone who never read the books, I had my concerns before I begun my playthrough of Witcher 1. I had worried it would be like other book adaptations of games, where if you hadn't read the books, you'd be completely in the dark, but that was not the case. Witcher 1 presents the story of Geralt of Rivia in a way welcoming to those new to the IP, while not overloading you with information or repetitive storytelling. The story of the world, Witchers, and the politics of Temeria are presented to you in easy to digest bits while the story plays out with you at the center, ensuring even someone (me) who had known nothing of the Witcher IP until playing, could enjoy the game and its worldbuilding and understand what was happening and why things were the way they were. The story of the game is well made, providing reasons for Geralt involving himself in these politics, and I enjoyed the choice of three "paths" throughout the game. Combat in the Witcher was fun, I played on the middle difficulty where there was a decent bit of challenge but it was manageable with overleveling or potion buffs, though there were times the combat got a bit buggy, like when Geralt would just stand there following being stunned. Magic in this game is incredibly strong, many things can be stunned and instakilled with Aard, and Igni does a crazy amount of direct and DOT Damage. The graphics are charming, I quite like the look of older games from the late 2000s - early 2010s, but thats just my opinion. Overall: 9/10 Story: Very good, well presented, made me excited for future games Graphics: Charming, immersive Combat: Fun, similar to RPGs of its age, a bit buggy Immersion: Easy to immerse yourself Difficulty: Easy, with multiple difficulties to choose from Replayability/Completion: Due to having three distinct paths to take, replayability is decent, lack of achievements hinders the games completion score however. PC Specs: Low, older games like this can run on anything
Classic 2000s RPG. 7/10. Originally I started with The Witcher 3, and got halfway through the game before deciding I wanted to experience the series in order. Going in, I thought this game would explain everything regarding the world and characters, but I'm still confused about certain things because I haven't read the books. However, it did help familiarize me with characters and explain some backstory for the future games. This game felt like a slog at times. I felt like dropping the game, but decided to push through. It's very dated and janky, even older games from that time feel more modern. Also, I didn't grow up playing this game, so I didn't have nostalgia for it. Therefore, it's hard to recommend this game unless you like 2000s RPGs or you're already a Witcher fan. PROS: It has an interesting story that keeps you captivated the whole way through. Also, each boss fight felt unique and epic, despite the bad combat. In addition, it has good music of different genres. And cool cutscenes, cinematics, and art. Moreover, it has thought provoking dialogue and choices. And last but not least, it utilized brilliant camera angles all throughout the game to express emotions. CONS: The graphics are very dated when compared to the other Witcher games. Additionally, it has janky movement that just stops working sometimes. Plus, it's a 2000s Bioware game, with a "rhythm" style of combat that is hard to enjoy. Throw in confusing and frustrating quest design that leaves out critical information, which at times requires looking up a guide. On top of that, constantly running back and forth across the map made me wish I used a speed mod. And the hair glitches constantly in cutscenes. For my playthrough, I went unmodded, which I don't recommend. I completed some of the side quests and witcher contracts, but not all of them. In addition, I stayed neutral for the most part. Furthermore, my build was based around Igni and sword. And I was able to acquire Aerondight. If I could give you any advice, prepare with potions, especially for the later parts of the game. My favorite quote was "Witchers exist to slay monsters. How can I when the real monsters hide behind ideals, faith or the law...?" Additionally, my favorite Chapter was 5, because of all that took place. And my favorite characters were 1. Geralt 2. Triss 3. Alvin 4. Dandelion 5. Berengar. I'm trying to play through The Witcher games in order now. I expect I'll like The Witcher 2 more, and I'll like The Witcher 3 the most. Also, I look forward to new The Witcher 3 DLC, The Witcher 4, and The Witcher 1 Remake.
Before “Can it run Crysis?” became the big question, mine was “Can it run The Witcher?” I knew nothing about the game when I first played it. A friend came to my house carrying this sick-looking PC game box and said, “Mine can’t play it. Can we try yours?” We were both blown away. The game looked insane at the time, and my PC could barely run it on Low at 800x600. Even so, once we got into it, the game was incredible. It told a very different story about monsters and monster hunters, with plenty of mature themes. It felt like we had discovered a hidden gem, and looking at where the series is now, I’d say we did. Fast-forward to 2026. The Witcher 3 is getting another DLC, another sequel is on the way, and I decided it was time to see how the original runs on Steam Deck. Graphically, the Steam Deck has no issues running it. The controls, though... this game was made for PC, and it definitely wants a mouse and keyboard. Thankfully, the kind souls in the Steam community have created controller layouts that work surprisingly well. By the end of the tutorial, I was already used to them. If you’ve never experienced the original and you’re coming from The Witcher 3, be patient with it. It’s a great game with plenty of rough edges, but it’s still worth going back to where the series began.
It's the first witcher. What's more to say? They were experimenting with combat systems, camera angles, characters in general. Should you pay it? Give it a go I suppose. It brings context for characters you see in 2 and even later in 3. I personally was quite 50/50 with it when I first started it and after completing it, I'm glad I played it, but I probably won't return. Is it a good game? Yeah, it is.
Apesar de gráficos ultrapassados e um esquema de luta meio estranho, que com o tempo habituamos nos, vale a pena jogar pela historia e para quem é fã do Geralt
Great game from the past
