I really wanted to like this game and for some parts I did. But some parts really pissed me off, so I'm not recommending to buy this, unless it's on a hefty discount, I'm petty like that. Pros: -Amazing soundtrack -Beautiful story
if you like Greek tragedy
-Likable characters -Good controls Cons: -Repetitive
you need to play the game multiple times over for story/character context and there is very little variety in between the playthroughs
-Sometimes the camera ♥♥♥♥♥ with you -Really bad localization, it's like the JP voices and the EN subtitles present totally different characters, I don't think it's the localizers job to misconstrue the original work -Sidequests are a chore for very little reward in my opinion -Collecting the achievements is some of the most god awfully boring ♥♥♥♥ I've subjected myself to in my entire life. We're talking about hours of grinding the same enemies and looking at loading screens, there is no other reason they would keep these things from the original game other than to absolutely ♥♥♥♥ with their customers 5/10
Good game. its fun, which is the main thing that matters. reason I recommend against it is because of its delivery. I honestly feel scammed. The store images makes it look like a modern made prequal to nier automata. it says "upgraded prequel" in the description, but delivering a ps2 game with a texture pack isn't worth 50/60 bucks. in fact, the reason I feel scammed is also the price. Saw the pics, the price and thought: "oh so a better quality nier automata but set in the past" which I don't think is unreasonable to assume. instead, I got a old ps2 game with a texture pack. I'm certain that's all they did too for various reasons I encountered in game. It still has optimisation techniques for the older consoles. I killed a sheep, turned around rq, turned to loot the sheep and it had despawned to save memory. I was barely 5 meters away and turned away for 3 sec. i could consistently recreate it to. kill any animal, urn around, and turn back and it will be gone. They have forced angles like the old resident evil titles, which was a old attempt to make it look more cinematic. fazed out industry wide since its super annoying in practice. Many interior areas are 2d. seams like an attempt to solve a hardware limit for an old console. felt like Super Mario 3d. Follow npc sequences old-school style where you're too fast when running but too slow when walking. even on controller. Very annoying when they need to traverse the OpenWorld. The terrain is super flat. no vegetation, shrubbery or grass. its a little dotted around here and there, but it generally looks naked and lowpoly in game. Cam angles does not look at all like they do in the store pics. its not close to the character like that at all. cam is further away, which is very annoying considering it looks dope to see the action up close like that. Unreasonable high bloom. looks like a flashbang when you look in certain direction. old games loved that since it was new tech. locked to 60fps due to engine limitations. For stuff like this I encountered in certain all they did was port the old game to pc and slap a texture pack on it. How is that worth 50/60 bucks? worth it? only if you're a patient person. if you know you can try old titles like for example the Witcher 1 or resident evil 0 and enjoy it despite how outdated it is, you'll have fun. not 50/60 bucks fun, but you wont be bored. if you cant stand games like that since you're used to modern gaming, you wont have much fun. especially if you just liked the last game and want that but new. also worth it if you're just super interested in the lore I guess. Square Enix has 4600 employees. 4 times the manpower of the company behind crimson desert. 23 times the manpower of the company behind game of the year winner kingdom come deliverance 2. they have the resources and manpower to deliver and deliberately chose to make this. its priced as it is because it is square enix. If a AA studio remade the game completely to modern standards it would be better quality and the same price. If they wanted to, they could remake it fully with insane graphics and animations. Its fine making a game like this. its not bad. but having us pay so much for it is as if they're spitting on us. Its disrespectful, especially when they're being sneaky
Horribly aged game. Get the OST and watch the story summary instead of actually playing this. The only thing this game does well is show just how much things had improved in Automata. I am so glad I played Automata to completion first before touching this - I would have missed out on Automata if this was my introduction to Nier. The gameplay is a complete chore that does nothing right: the "open" world is barren, completely linear in how it can be explored, treated by the main story as a way to increase your playtime by making you go from point A to point B and back to point A again ad nauseam, and has infinite loading screens. Sidequests are uninspired fetch quests - some of them are literally the stereotypical "go gather me 3 weeds outside the town, pretty please." The combat is dull and feels like you are just slapping enemies with a wet noodle or spamming that one good spell that actually works. Half of the UI is inaccessible if the game deems you in combat, which it often does incorrectly. The controls are even more locked into the controller and feel extremely awkward on keyboard+mouse in some sections. The players on linux also get a cherry on top with the VFX being broken (lasers and such seem to be invisible). I am fully willing to trust the positive reviews that the story is great, and whatever little I had heard of the OST was good as well, but if that all this game has going for it, watching a video summary - that someone had to compile to actually have pacing and not assume your attention for granted - sounds like a much more compelling idea. Additionally, whatever gimmicks this game is doing (like requiring multiple playthroughs) are probably repeated (and maybe even improved) in Automata. In summary - go play Automata if you have not played it already. If you have played Automata, this game is a strictly and significantly worse experience than Automata - just watch a video summary and grab the OST, instead.
Making a world big just so walking adds hours of gameplay time isn't my idea of good game design.
i genuinely didnt think a game's story could beat automata's after i finished but honestly now i'm questioning that!! pls play it through to ending e it's so peak and so worth the slog of playing the game a billion times over !! p.s. it ran very well on my steam deck !
