Amazing game. PS: Play Ultra Hard from the start - it is tough but totally doable. Makes it like an oldschool game that doesnt baby you.
The story, action, and progression feels perfectly paced and beautiful to explore. Totally recommend this game and Zero Dawn.
ok so, i'm going to sound dumb but listen first before you judge me. i play games on their hardest difficulties first to see how the game developers balance their game. i played zero dawn and struggled but in the end it was very much manageable, i had to learn how to fight the robots and that was by no means an easy task when you have 0 background knowledge of the game, but again as i said... it was manageable. i would rate zero dawns difficulty settings to be 9/10 the minus 1 being the combat mechanics had issues here and there in of themselves rather than the bots or human enemies or my own shortcomings. i've played the entire dead space trilodgy in the same way and struggled but [as was zero dawn, they were manageable. i say this to give context and to give you the understanding that i am skilled enough to play difficult games and can beat them..... so with that being said lets talk about this game..... very rarely do i find a game that gets me to play it for almost 10 hours and still feel like i'm in the prolog. the story so far (7.5 hours into the game mind you) is basically recap with shadow being presented as the "big bad" from the start. i've just reached the point where you get the luxury to fight human enemies. and boy do i have some words... to start... humans are notoriously hard to hit. so why is it that they have just as much health as the horse that they are riding on that takes 3-5 shots to kill? not to mention, they have armor that you are given no way to counter other than shoot very very well and hope you have enough ammo and healing supplies for the fight that you weren't told you were about to have. ok, let me break this down so you understand... there are games that balance combat via changing hp. not a viable way to do things but sure. but when you also don't give the player a method to counteract the huge wave of enemies they are about to face that you blindside them with and give them no way to reload a previous save like you gave in the last game, that shows me that you don't value our time as customers/players. let me reiterate... you have enemies that 1 hit you, about 5 at minimum encircling you at all times, you're given nothing but a basic ♥♥♥♥♥ bow, no prior warning that you're about to get into a massive fight to prepare for in advance, you have no way of backing out of the fight to get supplies or to level up your gear once you go in, AND you cannot change the difficulty of the game mid way through a run. i am softlocked. it's not 100% impossible but considering i'm on the lowest settings of visual quality i can put the game at and i'm running a consistant 30 fps at BEST, and the final fight of the battle is soo one sided, i have zero desire to give this game a good score. i'm sure the game is nice to play if you have a super high end PC or really a VERY recently up to date one, but when you play on the hardest difficulties of a game, the problems really show and i can point out each flaw. 1) the requirements to even PLAY the game are very high. for example, i can play just about every single game on steam with 0 issues and at LEAST get a 60 fps even when i have to lower some settings a little, this game can barely run at ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ quality. i mean ps2 games ran better with better graghics than this... 2) way too many buttons for the climbing sections. example, assassins creed has you turn to where you want to jump to and if you wanted to jump backwards you simply either looked that direction or held backwards and jumped. this game has you using... CONTROL to do multiple actions for climbing. dodge is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ double press WASD so for me who likes to change directions all the time mid combat, i find my character jumping off cliffs or jumping directly into the path of the enemies one shot attacks. to put this simply... movement is WAS overly complex for how simple games of the past have done them. 3) the terrain/environment has crap hitboxes and i find myself trying to get through a gap that's very large and not being allowed through. this goes for rocks, spike poles, buildings, and even the NPCs. enemies are fine but i have seen my arrow path go directly through some human heads a few times without registering a hit which is very frustrating. 4) enemy health is FAR too high to be reasonable. it's one things if you were to make armor harder to tear, maybe you do much less damage to an enemy if you just shot them in non-weakpoint locations. but for the snake to have soo much hp that i have to hyper annalise the fight to a point that instead of dodging, i run to the back where he can't reach me then cheese it in the second phase by staying directly behind the rock and using about 80 arrows to finally kill it even with hitting weakpoints is ridiculous 5) far too many enemies and not enough help. i swear, the amount of times i've played a game that has NPCs fighting alongside you but they do nothing to contribute to the game, i would be insane to think they'd all of a sudden be of any help to me. but again, most of the fights i've realised now have been with about 3-5 enemies on average. i get it's like davad vs galiath but still, they're tough enough to kill without having more enemies to fight right off the bat. 6) the way you explain and build up the player to be ready for the fights ahead simply don't exist in this game. look at the previous game for example, you were literally trained as a kid tell you were grown up how to sneak, trap, hunt, and do basic combat. human enemies on the HARDEST difficulty could be killed with a single headshot as a child when they were first shown to you as an enemy. this game? the first enemies can one tap you or chain attacks and staggerlock you until you die. not to mention that there's hardly any mention as to how to PLAY the game. there's simply no real tutorial. you're drip fed tips which cover the majority of the screen DIRECTLY IN THE CENTER OF THE SCREEN AND DOESN'T PAUSE THE GAME SO YOU CAN READ IT. ♥♥♥♥ sake... look, if you can get around all of this... it's not a bad game. it doesn't REALLY build on the previous game in terms of unique gameplay. the newer enemies are cool sure, but the world design is a complete flop for me because it literally ruined the playability of the game for me. the first was still bad don't get me wrong. from areas not being fully loaded in to going into a room of complete darkness, to some enemies being increadably annoying to face. but this game? ♥♥♥♥ sake, what happened? lowest settings and it barely runs and the hardest difficulty is unplayable and isn't salvagable? who hurt you guys?
Horizon Forbidden West is honestly one of the most beautiful games I have ever played. Every location looks amazing—forests, deserts, beaches, snowy mountains and underwater areas. Sometimes I stopped playing just to take screenshots because almost every scene can be used as a wallpaper. But the puzzles were so, so, so terrible. Many times I knew where I had to go, but the game forced me to search for one specific yellow ledge, move crates or climb from one exact direction. It became frustrating and ruined the flow of exploration. Also, this is a very heavy game, so you will need a powerful laptop or PC to enjoy it properly. Something around an Intel i7 processor, 16 GB RAM and an 8 GB graphics card would be better for a smooth experience. Overall, it has an amazing world, beautiful graphics and enjoyable combat, but the puzzles were easily the worst part for me. 8.5/10 — wallpaper-level visuals, fun machine combat and terrible puzzles.
