I must be missing something. I never played the Castlevania games, so maybe that's it. I really don't see what appeals here. I thought this would be a nice introduction to the sub-genre, but after an hour it just seems like a primitive nostalgia game that can't measure up to the likes of Hollow Knight or even Dead Cells. 2D sidescroller combat has come a long, long way. The writing is very JRPG-ish, which I can appreciate but don't actively enjoy. Really not for me.
Absolute Gaming
I've purchased this game twice now, between PC and Ps4, and I would buy it again if I could. Fantastic spiritual successor to SotN.

What an absolute disappointment. Excluding the whole Epic Games account nonsense this game is a huge letdown (I blocked it from having internet access the first time I launched the game and didn't encounter this problem but someone had to write a workaround guide to deal with it and wouldn't have bought the game if I was aware of this issue). I've played a lot of Castlevania games including Symphony of the Night which this is trying to emulate and it is a poor imitation. The world is absolutely uninteresting with bland areas and mediocre storytelling. It has that Unreal engine ugliness where everything is kind of shiny and wet looking. On top of that the art style and graphical direction are awful. Enemies and characters clash harshly with the extremely ugly background and are very muddy looking with low quality animations. Platforms barely stand out from the background and the whole 2.5D aspect is completely pointless. The game is not nice to look at, there is no other way to say it. Combat is pretty uninteresting with most enemies I faced just slowing plodding back and forth or doing very basic/boring attacks, most of which are just leaping at you or rotating around you because all you can do is back dash to avoid them. Hitboxes also seem kind of wonky and contact damage seriously sucks. Crafting and getting new spells is also a hassle. You're given shards at random from enemies you kill with no guaranteed way to get them other than farming the enemies. Crafting food and consumables is also quite a hassle due to the randomness of drops. Up to the point where I am there is also barely any metroidvania in this metroidvania. You're funneled in to a single direction and area that isn't fun to navigate and doesn't present any interesting challenges. The rail roading is kind of crazy even this early in the game. Overall the game simply doesn't feel good to play. Controlling the character and engaging in combat is not fun. I know we've had quite a few releases in this genre since 2019 but there were plenty of amazing examples in the years prior to this game's release. They tried to stay too faithful to what they were trying to imitate while choosing to fail at many of the aspects they were trying to copy. I really can't get over how ugly the game is. Every area was uglier and worse looking than the last which made it an even bigger chore to play. Plays like a game from the 90s with systems designed around the same time and looks like a game from the early 2000s. Unless you're really nostalgic and can overlook the outdated gameplay and ugly art style/graphics I don't recommend this even on a sale.
I love this game! Both on PC and Steam Deck! HOWEVER, where is the promised Mac and Linux Support? =( Come on man...
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a textbook example on how a modern metroidvania game should be made. This game has everything going for it - solid storyline, good and versatile gameplay loop, many different enemies, decently sized map that's not too small nor gigantic, and a main character, Miriam, that you actually care about. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game even though it has a good amount of backtracking if you are looking to fully experience what it has to offer. What I honestly liked the most is how detailed your character customization is, you can fully edit Miriam's appearance and switch separate pieces of equipment that allow you to fully tailor your style of play. This game introduces a concept of special abilities, or shards as they are called here, which let you select the ones you like to play with or are mostly suitable to you, and this is a standout mechanic. On the downside, the game can feel a bit obnoxious with it's saving system since save rooms are scattered all around the map and there's no autosave, so consider saving very, very often. Trust me, you don't want to die after playing for 30-40 minutes just to get back to the starting point. That's infuriating and it happened few times to me. All in all, there's a lot of love poured into creating this game, and it definitely shows. It's an absolute gem and I'm very happy I got to play it. 9/10
As a metroidvania fan, I felt obligated to play *Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night*. What I found was clunky gameplay, where exploring the map just makes you wander aimlessly until you somehow find where to go. Up to that point, fine — nothing new for a metroidvania without proper guidance systems. What really surprised me, though, was a bug that deleted an essential item needed to continue the game. In other words, I wasted 10 hours of my life for nothing, on top of the money I paid for the game. And after all that, there’s simply no way to reset or recover the save.
