[I] (Un?)luckily in Love [/i] was such a pleasant healing experience! It still feels like a dream that I actually read ebi-hime's novel without any dramatic, groundbreaking plot twist or heartbreaking ending. After so many tragic stories it feels like a gift xD Plus, I was a bit afraid that I'll read in the Notes that the author struggled writing about explicit gay novel, as she prefers yuri stories. But aww she said herself after [url=https://store.steampowered.com/app/1673020/All_Ashes_and_Illusions/] All Ashes and Illusions [/url] she wanted Yuel and Tavi to have a happy life they actually deserve. That's something totally novel for me: I've read a story, fell in love with the characters, suffered over their tragic fate and unfair deaths but then surprisingly found another novel—such a cute, engaging slice-of-life about them actually being happily in love. Actually I'm so excited to find even more novels about Tavi and Yuel and one that'll be released soon. I enjoy it a lot when it's obvious for the writer it's not just some project to make profit, that we share sincere love to the chars. It's so heartwarming! <3 Despite this story being sweet and utterly adorable! It's still ebi-hime's novelXD So, there's this controversial issue of having a close relationship with your own cousin. That's illegal in the majority of countries, right? Though it's a bit personal, as my uncle's first official wife was his cousin. I still don't get it how they managed to do it. They divorced after some time, it wasn't a happy ending for them, their son had to go through a surgery after he was born as his fingers were connected together and...he committed a suicide being a young adult. So such close blood relationship always felt a taboo. But again I stick to the belief that nothing should be frowned upon and judged if no one suffers. Visually it's a very pretty novel. I like how they look here more than in the previous game. Tavi's long hair is awesome! The game explores the journey of trying to get over the loss of someone close by finding support of those around you, battling with the intricacies of human emotions and falling in love. With a focus on cute storytelling and relatable characters, it's a linear story with no choices or branches. A free DLC is available which unlocks the +18 mode. [b][u]REVIEW[/u][/b] [h1]Story[/h1] The game follows the life of Yuel, a law college student, who finds himself caught in a web of complicated feelings about the sudden loss of his father. Saddened and feeling numb, battling alone with his depression, Yuel ends up contacting his elder cousin Tabi with whom he had not been in contact for a long time. Although reticent he decides to tell him all that happened and starts to open up to him little by little. By doing so, the feelings of sadness and depression he had bottled up, start to dissipate and change to mixed feelings about his cousin, who has been his emotional support. And there is where the romance slowly begins. As players progress through the story, they discover a cute side of the protagonist which cannot be appreciated at the beginning due to the obvious state of mind he was in. The game excels in presenting portrayals of love and "heartbreak", touching themes such as mourning loss, emotional vulnerability, the feelings of trying to exceed the expectations of others and self-discovery. The narrative is linear with no choices to make and only one ending. [h1]Visuals and Sound[/h1] The game features an anime-inspired art style with detailed character designs and backgrounds that help bring the story to life. The use of expressive character sprites and well-composed CGs enhance the emotional impact of pivotal scenes. Also some scenes have movement transitions (mostly the background) or simulate the movement of the characters which is nice and fresh! The game's soundtrack is a mix of soothing music which complements the story's atmosphere and tone, even if they are only played in specific moments. Which is nice because sometimes if the music keeps playing constantly it can get stuck in your head and might become a distraction or annoyance. The art displayed on the menus is beautiful, I really loved the traditional and the chibi art (the latest can be found in the save/load section) The game utilises the Ren'py optional self-voicing feature for the visually impaired. [h1]Pros[/h1] Engaging and emotional narrative Well-developed characters that players can connect with Beautiful art style and detailed backgrounds The party banter between Yuel and Tabi is sometimes hilarious and awesome!! The menus and options are easily accessible and the game has a very intuitive interface (ONLY FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT SPICY sexy eyebrow movement ) A free DLC is available in the store which unlocks the +18 mode with new CGs [h1]Cons[/h1] The text-heavy nature of the game may not appeal to all players but if you ended up here you are an otome player so that won't be an issue, right? I enjoyed Yuel and Tavi's banter in All Ashes and Illusions, so I was excited see their banter in an alternate universe and I wasn't disappointed! The banter very fun to read in this AU as well and there's the added bonus of them smooching~! *Editing this just to add that Yuel is very cute. (ebi-hime's Yuel propaganda is working on me...)

(I originally played this on itch.io and thus the time played is not accurate - this game probably took me about 7 or 8 hours to complete) I typical avoid any kind of incest content, but I decided to play this because I like ebi-hime's stories and I trusted her to handle the topic with sensitivity (which she did). I really was not expecting to enjoy this game nearly as much as I did with that in mind; but Yuel and Tavi are just so cute and sweet together that I was totally suckered in by this game to the point where I was fully thinking about them while on the clock at work. Yuel is an embarrassingly relatable hot mess of a guy and Tavi is an attractive, insufferable guy who ends up being just what Yuel needs. What's not to like? (The cute art and soundtrack also fit the story perfectly!) I think that pretty much any BL fan would be really into this; but even if you aren't particularly into BL and just like cute stories, I think this is worth a shot.

How many AUs can a pairing have? Not enough!

Unlucky in Love is a very cute, fluffy BL game. Despite the grim premise, most of the story revolves around Yuel spending time with Tavi, who help him recovering. There are many cute, humorous moments that is entertaining to watch. Characters can be very relatable at time, which make you want to rootfor them. Art is very nice and there is a good amount of CG. The music is very fitting, too. If you are into the BL game genre and want a nice, relaxing read, then you can't go wrong with this game.

Unluckily in Love is a kinetic visual novel (linear, no choices) about two troubled cousins and their relationship changing into something more than cousins. If you are not capable of handling incest content then you probably shouldn't get the free adult patch. Anyway, the younger cousin is named Yuel and he is a scrawny, socially awkward nerd who has been under the shadow and pressure of his father for all of his life. Suddenly, his wealthy but distant father dies and Yuel is thrown for a loop trying to keep himself intact. He doesn't have any friends or any social skills since he devoted most of his life to studying to appease his father. The other cousin is the older and flirtatious Tavi who is one of the few, if not the only person, who tries to help Yuel. Although Tavi himself isn't a paragon or a role model himself, he is a f*ck boy who likes to sleep his problems away with anyone hot enough. He can't even be bothered to remember any of their names. Despite all of this, he holds a soft spot for his younger cousin and tries his best even when Yuel is being a drama queen. I will warn you that this visual novel is a long slow burn so expect it to take several hours at least to get to the good stuff if you're reading all of the dialogue. Otherwise, I highly recommend this as the story manages to build Yuel and Tavi's character to be human and with flaws to make that slow burn worth it. The adult patch makes it even hotter too, just letting you know.
