What is Smart-Pause Gameplay (SPG)
To combine the tactical depth of turn-based strategy games with the dynamic flow of real-time combat, we developed a pause system for Pirate Patrol called Smart Pause Gameplay (SPG).
SPG is inspired by the Real-Time with Pause (RTwP) systems found in many real-time games, but it goes a step further by significantly enhancing the player’s sense of control in a real-time environment. With SPG, the game intelligently pauses based on the player’s input and intent, allowing for smooth, intuitive tactical decision-making.
This system enables players to plan ahead and issue commands without breaking immersion—eliminating the need to constantly press a pause button or deal with disruptive interruptions caused by scripted or repetitive events. The result is a more fluid and responsive tactical experience that stays fast-paced while remaining deeply strategic.

i really want to like this game but no save and the crashes. how do you not put in a save option first. i want to go play it again but dont feel like setting it all up again. im giving it a no for now but could easily change to a yes.
The initial moments of gameplay from Pirate Patrol has feeling. It's Battlestar Galactica. The music fits. You can launch fighters. Your crew have little faces. There's so much here to love from the initial set up. The concept of a left to right "build your own" gun turret box game is a great idea for a gameplay loop. It's even layered with trading, a strategic map, and an RPG character buildign layer for your Captain. A little like dungeons and battlestar. Where it begins to struggle: - Some minor crashes when alt-tabbing, and some strange pauses in the UI. Quite likely a few things new optimized or tweaked here. The crashes are not game breaking. - Complexity: The game has a lot of systems, but it really feels stretched. You have a lot of options for crew choices, but they have no real personality. You just choose the best stats. You have a lot of fighters to choose from. Same thing. You have piles of guns and missiles, but they're just walls of stats in a lot of ways. There is a strategy map with planets and systems to manage and take over, but it feels disconnected at worse and like a level selector with more steps at worst. - Gameplay design: Some gameplay design moments could have some immediate improvements. Fighters can scan wrecks to capture loot for your main battleship, Father. The fighters have to do this one by one though often while not much is happening in the sector. Particularly when you only have one fighter at the start of the game it's a chore to collect these items. - UI issues: The UI and some artwork appears to have been artificial intelligence assisted. Some fonts don't align or connect, sometimes the artwork clashes with the foreground, and some statistics are a little confusing to understand. Particularly the options menu is one of the most unusual I've seen being a stripe across the top of the screen. Some quality of ilfe options here could really help just with the general interface too. For example, if you click on Father (your main ship) and misclick, you have to reselect Father. With a lot of little objects around this can be a challenge and it's the only RTS I've played with this behavior. - Text: This could be a pet bother, but the game has a lot of text in places. Sudden text. Not quite walls of it, but a game often has to "earn" its text. Your first few hours of playing will have a few of these. Sometimes they pop up during missions. Sometimes immediately after opening a screen. There's also a "build your character" section which includes various dialogue responses you give to build your character. The text is a little more verbose than needed at times, but some people do like reading. In a lot of ways, it would be better if the game leaned more towards Void Wars or FTL. The gameplay loop of managing your ship, launching fighters, and strategy against rival fleets has some real positive energy behind it if it had more polish and strategy. Sometimes less is more, and in the instance of Pirate Patrol it tries to do a lot, provide a lot of systems and content, but doesn't quite deliver on that core area of gameplay. A brief comment on the complexity... While the UI is chaotic, none of the specific systems are difficult to deal with. Your major challenge will be that there are a lot of them: officer abilities, targeting, missiles, fighters, captain RPG mechanics, planets, a brutal vs merciful reputation system, deployable items from your vessel etc etc etc... I didn't find any of the complexity a game breaker, but I did find components in the game difficult to connect to tactical strategy in a satisfying way. Overall it's an unfortunate "no" to recommend. There is a game somewhere in here. In particular, the space battles provide moments of satisfaction. Overall though, the space battles aren't as strong as FTL, Voidwars, Homeworld, or Battlestar. The roleplaying doesn't hit the same itch as Star Traders or similar games, and the universe doesn't feel as lived in as management games like Stellaris. Only really lean towards it if you have a really strong desire to optimisation a Battlestar like ship in pixel format. Wishing the developer good luck in the future.
How is this a full release game please? I'd say the biggest issue for me is the graphics - there is no consistency. Pixel graphics here, "hand drawn" stuff there, then again some rendered stuff... Looking at the buttons, menu, UI in general - it looks like a 10 year old has made it. All the ship modules are impossible to properly compare, they lok like randomly created pixel art. This look like a dev with a decent idea has used AI to generate graphics, music and speech.
The game crashed almost immediately. I will be refunding. That said, before that it just dumped me into a galaxy map with no real direction and entry costs for every POI was ineligble. Horrible UI and "tutorial". No option to adjust resolution either. This is beyond undercooked.
dont get me wrong the game looks amazing and has a lot going for it but I am here to play a game thinking there is a guide by showing me where the things are and not sit there reading on what things do. I love the whole idea behind the game but I feel like it kind needs to redo the tutorial stuff or kinda tweak it a little bit. I would give this game another try if the tutorial shows me where things are.
Pirate Patrol is a tactical space combat RPG with some genuinely interesting ideas and a solid core, but its full 1.0 release still feels unfinished. Combat can be fun and visually engaging, and the overall concept of liberating sectors has potential. Unfortunately, frequent crashes, a poorly designed save system, excessive downtime caused by logistics management, and frustrating design choices seriously drag the experience down. Enemy level scaling and underdeveloped progression systems further hurt long-term enjoyment. Despite improvements since Early Access, too many fundamental issues remain. There is promise here, but in its current state, I can’t recommend it. Full video review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nW5SEb2zemk
Still a very early stage game but it shows potential. There is definitely a steep learning curve similar in vein to the 90s type games. The game play is interesting once you figure out the mechanics: you essentially operate a small carrier with 5 fighters that you position and fight against hordes of enemy fleets in a side-scrolling set up. Look forward to seeing this game evolve and update.
Pirate Patrol is a strong tactical space combat game that I've enjoyed playing. The strategic depth shines through in ship outfitting – customizing weapons and missiles keeps things fresh and engaging. The map is huge, with plenty of challenges to explore over time. For early access, it's impressive and delivers good value. Controls aren't the most intuitive yet, and the small on-screen text is hard to read, straining the eyes during longer sessions. Overall, it's a solid 8/10 – worth picking up if you like tactics, with room to improve.
