Highly-crafted environments, horrifying anxiety, and an intricate story are combined to create an immersive world that will bring you to the height of tension.

三上真司的巅峰之作。生存恐怖与心理恐怖的完美结合,恐怖类游戏难以逾越的一座高峰。
First of all, this game has issues on modern hardware. It has a broken frame limiter which reduces the framerate regardless of hardware. To fix it you have to add this "+r_swapinterval 0" command to the games's launch options. To do that, open you steam library right click the game and click on the Properties tab, and paste the command (without "") in the Launch Options box. This fixes the frame limiter however the game still has stutter and bad framepacing even if you limit it at 60. To fix this you need to limit the framerate to 60 in MSI Afterburner, using RivaTuner in addition to limiting the "Scanline Sync" option to 60 which is located just beneath the framerate limit option in RIvaTuner. You can also add the "+com_skipIntroVideo 1" command to skip the annoying intro splash screen that plays everytime you boot the game. This game also has noticeable texture pop in in cutscenes, to fix that you need to add the +fs_cachepath "C:\TheEvilWithinCache" (keep the "" at the path this time) command and to create an empty TheEvilWithinCache folder in your C: drive (you can point it toward a different location but this is the simplest and easiest path). The game will then create a 1GB file that saves texture cache after reboots which reduces pop in. Now to the review: This game is directed by Shinji Mikami which means that it has excellent combat (good feedback on hit, fair hitboxes, a variety of combat areas and enemies which interact in interesting ways, etc.) This game also has a very well implemented stealth system which allows you to do stealth kills and use various traps in the stages to your advantage to conserve ammo. The developers expect you to do so which means they don't shower you with countless resources. As a result, you never feel extremely overpowered thorought the entire duration of the game which makes the game more of a Survival Horror game rather than an Action game (unlike the Director's previous game of the same genre, the legendary original Resident Evil 4 which leans more towards action). This interesting blend of stealth and action and the variety of combat scenarios keeps the game fresh throughout the campaign. What isn't fresh, however, are the countless unskippable "press up to go forward" sequences where you can't do anything but walk, boss chases that play out the same way every time, many insta kill segments that occur if you don't immediately figure out what to while you are being chased around and unskippable slow door opening animations in this game's "save rooms". There is also an annoying segment where a boss monster can just spawn randomly and insta kill you if you don't find yourself near a place to hide. All this and many other tiny unskippable cutscenes lessen the replayability of the game which is unfortunate as the game expects you to replay it multiple times as you can unlock extra difficulties and weapons and a new game+ mode. This uneven pacing is a shame as the actual gameplay of the game is top notch. Despite these issues I still recommend experiencing this game as the uniquely well done balance between stealth and action is unmatched. I just wish there was an arcade mode of some sorts that would let you play through only the combat rooms of the game while skipping all other pace killing segments that decrease replayability.
The worst opening to a video game ever devised

I wanted to play this game but it should not be sold in the state that it is in. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops just to be able launch the game properly. I bought a new device and was excited to come back to this only to remember how much of a pain in the ass it is to get it to run. Come on Tango/Bethesda, release the game in a proper state. Nobody wants to launch the game only to be met with a black screen and forced to look up guides on how to get the damn thing to work! Buying it on GOG or something, selling it in such a state is ridiculous.

This game will make you feel so...evil...within
