About
“The Mad Virus” has spread throughout the world with the speed of jet planes. The infected are highly aggressive, fast and strong. In a couple of weeks, society collapsed. Cities are empty. There is no electricity, no water, and no food. Yet, there are a few survivors...
Type in the name of the city or town, download the map and start playing! Thanks to OpenStreetMap’s real-world data, you can choose any place in the world for your survivors.
Establish a new “Infection Free Zone” wherever you choose. Set up shelters and production facilities. Adapt existing buildings to new needs. Build new farms and power houses. Establish defenses with walls, gates, and towers.
Utilize your knowledge of the city. What is the best place to defend? Where were the grocery stores, where were the pharmacies? Where would you look for weapons? Remember that it’s dangerous to search the old buildings, there might be some infected lurking in the dark!
Each night, your settlement might be attacked by large hordes of the infected. Fight them off with every tool available - melee and ranged weapons, vehicles, walls and light. Research a vaccine or a cure for ultimate victory, or just enjoy rebuilding entire cities!
Your Zone is not the only one that exists. Your survivors will surely find other surviving groups. Some will be friendly and willing to trade, but others will be extremely hostile. There might be some fighting involved!

IFZ has slowly been getting better, brew/grain mechanics fixed and was recently the most playable its been in early 2026. I've been playing on hard/very hard mode for a good while, lots of map variations and different playstyles to figure out all the systems. Ive never liked RTS but I love this game since its just different. however, now ta 840hrs into the game the devs changed the priority system, its crap. up/down arrows for work assignments, old worker counts on each build/scav activity are now max helper limits not assigned workers. its crap. recently the devs in an update mentioned 'some people are using workers to build/scav through the day and then put them onto guard duty all night' yep thats the mechanics of the game. if they want us to leave guards in towers all day we're gonna need double the worker base. despite this the new priority mechanic does nothing to address that guard/build cycle. I hope they revisit the priority system, back to what it was - **i really believe new players will simply drop the game 1-2hrs in realising they cant play with broken arrow based priority controls**. otherwise an awesome game with different purpose and mechanics to others in the RTS/survival genres.
Let me prefix my review, this game is fun, it has good management gameplay and dangerous situations are legitimately thrilling, you can turn your city into survivalist outpost, I quite enjoy it. However the use of AI for anything in game is not to be forgiven, placeholders would have been much better. Dev, you have good game here, don't tarnish it with AI garbage
Like most games, the idea is good but the creators never perfect it and don't work on QOL updates, instead they work on other stuff around the game that no one asked for and stuff that just makes the game worse. I hope this game will go a better direction before the full release, but its hard to see that happen Pros: Good base building and can build anywhere Can build and renew squads Lots of little events Decent zombie variety Squads can be relocated anywhere (useful when your base gets attacked) 1x, 2x, 3x speeds and pausing And best of all a tech tree Cons: Audio script sounds like it was written by a child, very simplistic and cringe Very short days Workers and squads travel very slow, taking majority of the short day traveling instead of working Too much micromanaging of builders, guard posts and functional building Priorities are wack and majority of workers will be working on insignificant work Looting system is very simplistic Bad squad loadouts(No equipment slot for grenades and each squad member has one inventory slot) You can loot the majority of the map in 30 short days Combat system is simplistic and uninquisitive (who ever has the bigger numbers and better guns wins) To much squad micromanaging, the game encourages you to have multiple squads, yet they travel slow and its hard to manage all of them when it turns night and they all get attacked, especially since the days are so short. Building one of anything can take a day to 5 days because of the bad priority and builder count system. I spend all the the time on 3x because literally nothing gets done on 1x (unless im in combat and need to watch my squad's health) even when my squads are in cars, they spend majority of a day traveling half way across the map and when they start looting i have to watch ever squad because itll turn night and the danger spikes, very inconvenient
Interesting game, but -clunky controls (lackluster keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys) and map view -unresponsive support, ignored -incompatible with wireless headphones, audio cutting out all the time -buildings are often either wrongly identified (like a solar farm or a greenhouse gets turned into a multi story apartment building) or placed directly on roads, blocking traffic -and other inconsistencies (like an expedition's squad car being destroyed in a quest that is meant to play out inside a laboratory. How come the car that should be parked outside is affected?)
I've enjoyed this games throughout it's early access iterations yet I do not recommend it. Here's why : - Slow development, too slow. - Still numerous bugs. Most won't ruin your playthrough, but some are frustrating and will have you reload a previous auto-save wasting half or more of a day's work. - Balance is still awful. AWFUL. Early game is mostly pleasant but from mid-game on, it's bad. End game is absolutely trash. Half of the weapons are pitifully underperforming. Fuel consumption is gravely exaggerated. Defenses are underwhelming at best (which is why most people play only with squads and walls). - Little to no quality of life / ergonomic design. UI leave a lot to be desired. Important things like sqaud skills aren't explained at all. There's a lot of useful info you'd like to know but it missing / impossible to get from the game itself. - Statistics are often wrong. The interface tries to give you a good amount of stats regarding your various ressources and production but from mid-game onward, it falls off and become unreliable. Especially food. It's often hard to know for sure you're in the green. - Vehicles, they're a mess. They works but not much fun about them. Their stats are too similar to truly differentiate them. The few available upgrades aren't worth much. - Lack of ennemy diversity. In the last few updates, they've worked on that but it's still bad. Again, early game is fine. It's from mid-game onward that it's getting very repetitive. It's mostly just bigger waves. Always bigger waves. - Lack of ideas, sadly, it's true. There's plenty of stuff the devs could add but somehow it's still not in the game. For example, if they don't want to give our weapons proper range to keep the gameplay difficult and dangerous then they should at least add a watchtower defensive building that grant us better vision agains't the fog of war during night time to allow us to see the infected hordes coming and react properly. Etc, Again, I've had my fun with this game. I'm mostly done at this point though.... because the last few patches, while they did bring new things, some of which are good, have been ruining too much of what was already fine before. The game is currently in a worst state now. Honestly, it could be a great game. If the devs were to keep cooking for a while, fix the bugs, and add some more stuff.... it could be great. I'll keep an eye on it in case it happen but I'm not waiting for it.
useless update, still crash 2 years' work still beta. Polish game, polish company, that makes sense. Fix crash!!!Polish PIGS!
Okay... This is more of a rant about one specific thing (that doesn't even concern the game by itself) rather than a proper review. You have been warned. I love this game A LOT. I have started many runs throughout the game's release and it has been a blast whenever I get the urge to play it. My only gripe is that it lacks a proper, fleshed out wiki page. The game has many things it doesn't tell you straight, which is fine- I'll just put on my big boy pants and figure things out along the way! But when one of those things turns out to be something that ruins your entire gameplan and you cannot even work your way around it... I hope you get my point, because that point has stabbed me throughout multiple savefiles and I don't want to be alone on it. So yeah. I would like the developers to work together with their more dedicated players to make a proper wikipage. I am only leaving this as a negative review due to how many times I have been annoyed by it. Otherwise I recommend this game due to the unique idea behind it... hopefully I won't forget to turn this into an upvote later if this matter is truly taken care of.
The game is unfinished and after two years, I guess it will stay so. It has a tons of bugs that makes the controls messy and affecting gameplay significantly. A lot of mechanisms are not explained at all or doesn't work or just clunky. You need constantly google for how to use granade, use explosives, use shooting ground etc. The concept is really nice and is still fun to play from time to time but after a couple of hours, you just get full of all the non-delivered promises of the game.
Unlike other zombie games, where you just survive, this one has a different goal in mind. You start from a wimpy group of maybe 20 and over time you could become a rapid industrial super power. The game let´s you build your own factories, machines, refineries, combat vehicles and so on. As you grow you will start to make relationships with other big factions. Some will be cooperative, protective and supportive, others just want you dead. Late stage the zombies kinda become a maintainance issue rather than a threat lol. Your biggest issues will rather be the tensions with your neighbours and the mood of your own people. So it kinda starts with project zomboid but you end up with some sort of workers and resources/cities skylines. I see a huge potential for an fxxx ton of possibilities but the game needs a lot of polish. The research tree feels barebone and you just get too quickly too powerful
