It's awesome! Lost the track of time while playing it. Story is good, classic manga style writing. Characters may feela bit cliché, but have well rounded personalities going from sweetheart to 'oh my god why?" depending on the situation. Plot thickens a LOT as you progress. Graphically, it's simple but very well made, scenarios look really good. The combat system may be a bit finnicky, but you can kinda DMC you way through. If you want to be a tryhard, crank up the difficulty and prepare your patience to retry a grunt battle 5 times. Overall, great game 9/10
One of my favorite JRPGs and Games in general ever made.
I didn't really like some of the other games in the series, but this one stands out. The story is solid. The characters are well written, and not just stereotype generic personalities for any given class. Everyone has a decent story arc and some real character development throughtout the game. It's still a JRPG though, so expect to sink at least a hundred hours in... That being said, a remaster is coming out. I didn't see major changes in presentation, but it promises quality of life improvements. Afaik, the game has some censorship. Something about the bloodier scenes got cut out. And if you want another rabbit hole, check out the Localisation story. It sounds like the game was dubbed into English, then machine-transcribed into English subtitles, leading to some very amusing gibberish. That gibberish was then taken to translated into other languages. I think the actual game is now pretty much fixed, apart from some very obscrure side quests.
Kind of wish I could do a middle score of "Meh". The story was good but not the best. Beginning hooked me but it slowly lost me as it went. The characters are all great and have good growth as the story progresses. I ended up not finishing it. What made me quit before I reached the end was the actual gameplay. The dungeons are all the exact same thing, except the layout is different and it looks different. You are doing the exact same things in every single one of them, though. Puzzles are few and far between and even then they are just "activate X in Y location to open Z door", so super simple. Once you have played through to where you leave the prison, you have played through every dungeon in the game because they all were the same. No variety. The combat also got super boring super fast. The dungeons are all flooded with enemies. The combat system itself wasn't bad (even if it was very convoluted with 5-billion walls of text to explain it), but it gets old fast as you are in combat every 2 steps. You can have your character auto-fight battles, but the AI is incredibly dumb and will just stand there for no reason 80% of the time. It is much much (much much) faster to just do the combat yourself. It's a shame as the story is good (especially coming from Zestiria), but the game just could not hold my attention enough for me to finish it. I came to realize I was just trying to power through it and lost motivation to continue. The story was good but not good enough to make up for everything else being bleh. (For reference, I got to where they took the prison as their base and went fishing.)
Mouse & keyboard experience is horrible. Other than that, one of the well-made Tales games.
Tales of Berseria is a game that will keep you entertained for dozens of hours. If you like JRPGs.
The main advantage is the storyline, which is interesting and quite dark for a JRPG. The theme of revenge, which runs through most of the game, and the characters are the main theme and the biggest plus, although not the only one. The music is quite good, there are some really nice tracks, and it builds the atmosphere. The graphics are just okay. The game was created on the Unreal Engine 3 and released on older generation consoles, which results in fairly simple open locations, but the cities and towns are pleasant. Of course, it's an anime game, so it looks much better thanks to the style. The game has a lot of side quests and a few additional mini-games, which further extends the playing time and your stay in the world. The world itself is large and interesting, it is not monotonous, there are many different landscapes, from ordinary green areas, through snowy regions, to swamps and others. The combat system is Action JRPG where the difficulty level matters and you have to focus on the more difficult levels, there is no turn-based option here, but the combat is really fun and engaging. Berseria is a game where you can spend many hours getting to know a very cool story and interesting characters.
