There aren't very many underwater horror games out there. Sure, we have SOMA, Narcosis, Depth, and Bioshock to an extent, but only one of those features sharks as a villain and that one is a multiplayer-only title. In fact, if you do a search for "horror games with sharks", you pretty much only get Shark Attack Deathmatch 2, Depth, and as of January 24, 2020, you also get Submersed. Capitalizing on the surprisingly prevalent fear of sharks is one of the few unexplored niches left in gaming, and it's one that definitely deserves further delving. Queue Submersed, a game that's all about capitalizing on the surprisingly prevalent fear of sharks. Told over the course of seven chapters, which equal out to about two hours in length, the story centers around experiments on sharks that have gone awry. Aboard a capsizing ocean vessel, a man named Jack Ballard finds himself alone and stranded. It soon becomes clear that most of the crew have been dispatched in gruesome, inhumane ways. After some digging, Jack becomes aware that the members had discovered a new parasite within a pit they found in the ocean, and that their captain decided to inject it into some sharks. Doing this made the creatures extremely aggressive, and now with the boat filling with water, those aggressive creatures are seeking Jack. As you can tell by the brief synopsis, this is a game that is full of plot holes, which are dug even deeper by translation errors. As far as gameplay goes, it's your typical survival horror scenario; walk around a spooky environment, gather more story from notes and computers, solve mild puzzles by finding items, and fend off your attackers. The environments are well done, and there's a good mixed variety of both the interior and exterior of the ship, as well as time spent underwater while both swimming and in a diving suit. The atmosphere is also really hearty, and it does feel as though you are on a damaged and sinking ship with real danger present. That said, there could be more enemies since there are only 3 different types of sharks, and only a few brief encounters with each of them. Whenever you're not in water you know that you're completely safe, and that takes away from any tension that could be built up. What really kills Submersed entirely its its lack of polish and functionality. The game only runs at 30 FPS, which is a mortal sin for any PC release, but that's just the tip of an iceberg that houses a plethora of problems. For some reason all of the button prompts are geared towards an Xbox controller, and there is no menu or tutorial telling you what keyboard and mouse buttons perform which action; it's all trial, error, and guessing. Additionally, some of the items in the game just don't even bother to work, such as a little device that's supposed to capture the attention of sharks that you come into contact with inside the ship. There also doesn't seem to be a way to kill these inner sharks, even though you gain an electrified weapon, the best you do is make them run away when you could simply run past them. The sharks that you meet while outside of the ship follow simple patrolling patterns, and you just wait for them to go away before running to your next destination. Submersed still needs a lot of work in order for it to be both fun and functional. At the very least, the 30 FPS cap and lack of keyboard and mouse prompts should be addressed. The main purpose of the game also feels disjointed, as you're supposed to be facing off against some of the most fearsome predators on Earth, but yet all you do is wait for them to swim away; you hardly even get to see them, and when you do some ugly free "rock" soundtrack plays in the background instead of any horror-themed songs. There are some good ideas here, and the developer should be commended for branching out into new and mostly unexplored gaming territory, but the fact remains that Submersed is not an Early Access title. It should not have launched with so many problems that cause more frustration than fun. It needs a lot of work, and perhaps in a future release we'll actually get to see some formidable shark versus human struggle for survival. More reviews on our Curator Page Developed by Main Loop Videogames, Submersed has been apart of a few interesting events, including award winning of Best Basque Game at the Fun&Serious Game Festival, and a nominee for Best Debut Game by GameLab. Directed by Jose Antonio Muñoz, which is also the sole programmer and lead designer, this is one of those titles where we have to recognize the efforts, but also come to realize its flaws. A strong point of Submersed is the story, setting up players in the shoes of Jack Ballard in a rescue mission to a research facility underwater. Things start off on the wrong foot, when the helicopter taking him crashes on the landing, resulting in the death of his partner. With nothing but bad news, the worst is yet to come, when the remaining survivor of the facility warns Jack about what lurks beneath… It’s not one of the most strong scripts, but ends up working quite well, since there aren’t many dialogues, and most of the story events are found through documents, reports and emails within the game. It’s well contextualized and delivers a fantastic placement of events. The concept is really good, and although its execution fails to aim at the intended level, the production was well intended. In Submersed you’ll traverse the facility in search for survivors, only to find a deeper and dangerous threat. Although the inventory system is archaic and rigid, it’s possible to pick objects and even combine some to create lockpicks, and other utilities. It’s a take on the first-person game, except without any guns. Instead, the flashlight will probably be your best friend. Some sections will require you to use a diving suit and traverse underwater areas. The gameplay won’t change much, but some mechanics will become more interesting. Since there aren’t any real fights, it’s almost like a mystery based adventure, but sharks do exist, as you possibly guessed it by now. Stealth will be your best way, and for these, the mechanics actually work. Sharks A.I is as simple as it can be, but works. It’s possible to create a weapon based on lightning and even an electro charged grenade, but the item management and the safe-deposits that work exactly like the ones in Resident Evil, weren’t correctly placed. This leads to the lack of a proper planning and always feeling cluttered with trash. This is the type of game which needs a prompt telling players a certain item is no longer needed. Unfortunately the overall gameplay is very stiff, and it shows, as most of the issues could have been fixed if given more time. I sincerely want to give a positive feedback and recommend this one, but it’s a tough decision. The gameplay should be further polished, and it’s locked at 30fps. This alone is unjustified and ridiculous. The lack of options is another feature lacking, usually typical with games using Unity.. Resolution and Quality, ranging from Low to High, are the only optimizing settings you’ll get. There’s not even an option to control the in-game audio. All the remaining options are languages, brightness and the Y-Axis, useful for those playing with a gamepad. With such a lacking amount of settings, the whole experience is set for a doom finale, but there could be a hope somewhere. The visuals are simple, but they work for the most part. I only wish I could have removed the excess chromatic aberration, but in terms of visuals, everything was decent. The voiced over cast did a great job, and I’ve seen a few discrepancies between voices and subtitles not matching, but it’s not much of a big deal. The idea of stealth your way through sharks, or diving into a complex facility underwater is appealing, and the game capitalizes right at it. It shows some intense and interesting things across a campaign between 2 to 3 hours, creating a great atmosphere, one I recognize as a low, but satisfactory experience. If you absolutely can deal with the poor optimization, Submersed will probably surprise you, especially if purchased during a special sale.

I understand making indie games is a difficult task. However, I have to be honest. This game is bad. I was very excited by the concept of another underwater horror game. Unfortunately, this game fails in every department. The story isnt good. The translations are terrible. The options menu lacks basics such as lowering sound. Half of the game mechanics have no point. The two anti sharks weapons cant be used in water which, believe it or not, is where sharks tend to be. I could go on and on but this review would be five paragraphs. Save your money and buy literally anything else. Also I highly suspect the positive reviews are fake.

Good survival horror indie game, reminds me of Alien isolation but with sharks :)
