Sadly, I don't think I can recommend the game in its current state. I had it wishlisted for months and I was very excited since I'm a Saiko no Sutoka fan, but my experience was underwhelming. My review isn't exactly negative considering the game is new and still being actively updated, it's more leaning towards neutral. First of all, I was very excited about Yoto since these kind of games are usually focused on female yanderes, and I was left disappointed. His design is very cute, but his lore feels so underwhelming compared to Yoko's, I understand that the game is called YOKO no Hanashi, but she gets a longer cutscene, various scenes around the building and even more in depth lore, while Yoto's is just "oh yea i love this girl a lot! also i have issues with my parents so thats why im a yandere!", so yeah, I just expected more story-wise. My second biggest complaint is about the game mechanics. It's advertised as "Solve the puzzles and escape", but it's more of a "Solve the two puzzles and then look for the keys while trying not to die", which isn't exactly bad but it's different from what I expected honestly. Also, I'm not sure if it's just something I'm imagining, but regarding of difficulty level, my runs with Yoko were much harder than the ones with Yoto, her AI is just more aggressive even in easy mode and it felt like she could hear everything. My conclusion is that the game CURRENTLY isn't worth playing, not if you're interested in deep-lore and looking for something unique like I am, I'll keep following the updates and come back in a few months to check on the progress. What I wish for the most is for Yoto and Yoko to be more interactive with the player, and it would be nice to have a gallery in the menu that keeps track of the collected notes and tapes, since I love reviewing lore or just coming back to games to re-read stuff.
Honestly, it has potential. There's a lot that can be improved like: 1. The story on why Mc likes that abandoned college so much. Unless I missed the reason, it feels like a really random place to go to. Not only is the mc absolutely stupid for going to an abandoned building, alone, with no way of protecting herself and not being even slightly cautious while going inside. She seems to have 0 connection to this place other than 'random spot she visits sometimes'. Maybe it could be her father's old college school, which we can see from more pictures, items or old notebooks? 2. Interaction with the yandere's. While right now they are just adorable, it feels like they don't have a lot going on. After calming them down, you cant chat with them nor can you punch or push them. They also get aggro'd by simply picking up any item. If it were keys or key items, that's fair. But books, heals, tapes and notes shouldn't have them going after you immediately. I feel like books should make them warn you to drop it if you had already thrown something at them, otherwise, they could question you on why you're picking it up. Heals could make them apologise for hurting you (and maybe if you're on very low hp, they could even offer to help) And any tapes or notes could have their own unique reactions to hearing/reading them. I also think giving them unique, tiny cutscenes in certain places would be neat. Like getting cornered somewhere or sitting together on some of the benches/chairs. Even just an animation of them forcefully grabbing onto your hand would give them a bit more personality. 3. This game doesn't really have puzzles When I first played, I was expecting some more puzzles to find stuff and escape or get a certain ending. It was a bit boring to just run around the place constantly, going back and forth to just pick up stuff and open doors. Maybe let the yandere's sometimes close you in spaces and make you do a riddle or something to let you out. They seem like they can get pretty playful, so it would be a nice touch. 4. The map is a bit empty Now I know this game hasn't been out for long, so it's fine if it's a bit bare, but I really do hope there will be a bit more differences between furniture and the trash lying around. That's really the only things that bothered me a little. Otherwise, I really do like the idea of this game, the snark that the mc has is really funny (Please keep that in, she's hilarious). I like how adorable the yanderes can be and that they aren't just hostile towards us. Also, I really like the art and voice acting this game has! Honestly, I didn't expect how nice the voices would be, lots of emotion and decent quality for voice acting. As it is right now, I personally wouldn't recommend it to people even if I like it. I hope the game gets better with each update and can't wait to see what comes of it :>
I adore Yoto. I play this game only for Yoto. Though, I wish there was a lot more development with him. Yoko seems to have a lot more time spent into her character, and has a more fleshed-out story. For Yoto, he seems a bit more 2D with his motivations and backstory. I adore him to pieces. I love his voice, and the way he interacts with you. Though, I wish there could be more interactions with him, and even have a talk with him once he's calmed down. Yoko has more scenes than Yoto, and it makes the gameplay story rather dull. Most of the other endings involve going into the principal's office. I wish the game gave you more of an objective of what to do because you're sort of just running around blindly the whole time. I remember being confused a lot of times while playing the game because I didn't know what to do next after getting all of the items. I adore the feature of him hiding behind columns and sometimes behind the doors of the rooms you're in. It's terrifying when he just comes up to kill you. Books don't mean ♥♥♥♥ half the time. Bro has plot armor protecting him at all times and the power of teleportation. The english translations are a bit poor in the game, but they're good for the most part. Again, I adore Yoto. I'm a massive Yoto simp and I do everything for him. It's such a nice game, and it's incredibly addictive to play, especially since I get to stare at Yoto all the time. (In Easy mode. Once you calm him down, he stays calm like that until you do something that pisses him. Which is essentially doing anything in the game.) Some spots of the maps can be more interactive; things are usually found only on tables and drawers, but that's basically it. It makes no use of the cabinets. There's only hiding spots in wardrobes, which aren't really worth it if you're playing normal or hard. Since he hears you all the time. (Which is hot.) So I would like hiding underneath office desks more or behind bookshelves. There are a few glitches in the game. Sometimes after you calm down the yandere, they completely freeze. That's how you know you're screwed because you won't be able to throw books anymore, and every time you pick up a note, it's force on your screen forever. You can't go into the menu so you have to quit the game. I had this happen to me several times whenever I was so close to getting one of the endings. All that said, it's well made game. I like the fact that Yoto and Yoko are different. Both of them are different characters with their own cutscene and stories. Yoto seems a bit more rushed than Yoko, but they're different. Not just the genderbent versions of themselves. They even have their own voicelines, which I enjoyed. I just wish Yoto has a bit more scenes, and I want to marry him. Thank youuu.
Неплохая игра, но будто очень мало контента с Йото, я расстроилась
Developed and published by MerendaTeam, Yoko no Hanashi is an indie first-person survival horror experience that combines psychological suspense, exploration, and branching storytelling into a compact but memorable adventure. Rather than centering its horror around overwhelming combat or relentless action, the game focuses on creating unease through the unpredictable behavior of two obsessive yandere characters whose motives slowly unfold as the story progresses. The premise immediately stands out by offering players two distinct narrative routes. One path revolves around Yoto, a fellow college student consumed by an unhealthy obsession, while the other introduces Yoko, a mysterious young woman who promises to reveal the truth surrounding the protagonist's father's death. These parallel scenarios ensure that every playthrough offers fresh discoveries, making replayability one of the game's strongest qualities. The abandoned college where the story takes place becomes a character in its own right. Empty classrooms, dim hallways, forgotten offices, and locked facilities create an atmosphere of constant discomfort, encouraging players to proceed cautiously as they search for clues and puzzle solutions. Environmental storytelling gradually fills in the background of both the location and its inhabitants without relying on excessive exposition. Instead of rushing players from one scare to another, the game allows tension to build naturally through silence, uncertainty, and the feeling that danger may emerge at any moment. Every new area explored contributes another piece to the larger mystery while reinforcing the oppressive mood that defines the experience. Gameplay emphasizes exploration, puzzle-solving, and survival rather than direct confrontation. Players must gather important items, solve environmental challenges, and carefully navigate the college while avoiding encounters that can quickly become deadly. The puzzles are integrated naturally into the setting and encourage observation instead of trial-and-error guessing, while progression depends on paying attention to details hidden throughout the environment. Since each of the two story routes features exclusive events, collectibles, and interactions, returning for another playthrough rarely feels repetitive. The inclusion of multiple endings, including several hidden conclusions, gives players meaningful incentives to experiment with different decisions and thoroughly investigate every corner of the school. The game's greatest strength lies in its two central antagonists. Yoto and Yoko are far more than simple horror villains, as each possesses a distinct personality, motivation, and relationship with the protagonist. Their differing behaviors significantly influence both the pacing and emotional tone of their respective routes. One presents a more familiar portrait of dangerous obsession, while the other gradually transforms from an enigmatic guide into something considerably more unsettling. Their contrasting stories help maintain player interest throughout repeated playthroughs, and the possibility of escaping, uncovering the complete truth, or reaching one of several alternative endings makes every choice feel meaningful within the larger narrative. Visually, Yoko no Hanashi embraces a stylized indie presentation that prioritizes atmosphere over technical complexity. The lighting, confined environments, and careful use of shadows work together to establish an unsettling sense of isolation. Sound design further enhances the horror through subtle ambient effects, moments of complete silence, and music that shifts appropriately during tense encounters. The mature themes involving violence, disturbing situations, and psychological instability are presented to reinforce the story's darker elements rather than relying solely on graphic imagery for shock value. As a result, much of the horror comes from emotional discomfort and the unpredictable actions of its characters rather than excessive gore. Although the game's relatively modest production values occasionally reveal its independent origins, they do little to diminish its overall effectiveness. Players seeking fast-paced combat or expansive gameplay systems may find the mechanics somewhat simple, and revisiting familiar environments across multiple routes can occasionally lessen the sense of surprise. However, these minor shortcomings are outweighed by the compelling narrative structure, effective atmosphere, and strong replay value. The combination of branching paths, multiple endings, engaging exploration, and memorable antagonists allows the experience to remain entertaining well beyond a single completion. Yoko no Hanashi succeeds by understanding that psychological horror is often more effective than constant action. Its unsettling setting, layered storytelling, satisfying exploration, and dual-route structure combine to deliver a horror experience that feels distinctive despite its relatively small scale. Fans of narrative-driven survival horror, especially those who enjoy unraveling mysteries while navigating tense encounters with unpredictable enemies, will find plenty to appreciate. While it may not redefine the genre, it demonstrates impressive ambition and thoughtful design, making it a worthwhile experience for players looking for an atmospheric indie horror title with meaningful replayability.
