Great Game
Probably the greatest story ever told in gaming. Nobody can ever convince me that playing through the game multiple times is a bad mechanic. Yoko Taro is a genius.
hussy, emil and the ♥♥♥♥♥

You can really see how this game was an important step that made possible Nier Automata. There are many aspects of it that are lackluster and that make the game hard to play: -Narration: to understand the story you're forced to play the game multiple times just to see a scene that will give a little bit of context -Questing: the side quests are many and really tedious furthermore if you're careless and proceed in the main story some quests can become inaccessable. If you're not a completionist just avoid them imho -Weapons: once you discover which weapon to use, because some are clearly stronger than others, you stop caring of most of the weapons. The only interesting aspect is the story that they tell, but.. -Farming: to have the whole story you're supposed to enhance these weapons and getting the ingredients is extremely grindy Despite all of this the game want to tells a good story that is deeply intertwined with Automata lore, so if you plan to play the latter I suggest you to play Replicant. The gameplay shares the same weakness of its successor. As an hack 'n slash it is a bit repetitive, the customization of the protagonist is kind of limited and if you seek challange you will only find enemies with high damage and health pool (don't play on hard).
If you love Yoko Taro's wacky storylines and weird concepts (such as the Drakengard series) this is more of the same. Technically, continuing after one of the endings to Drakengard 1. Nier has a cool story with some depressing twists and plot points. It is a simple RPG with basic combat and magic spells. The real draw is the setting, which if you want to experience all of it you will have to read Grimoire Nier, as the game itself does not fully explain everything. This is a somewhat niche cult-classic. It's always been a favorite of mine and it's nice that we finally got a translated version of Replicant. If you played the old Nier (Gestalt) it's the same story with only subtle changes in dialogue to account for the different version of the main character. I used to not like the Papa Nier from Gestalt and always wanted an English version of Replicant, but Papa Nier grew on me over time. I wish we would have gotten a hybrid game where instead of playing as Kid Brother Nier then Adult Brother Nier we played as Adult Brother Nier (as a younger Papa Nier) from the start and then extend the time jump to get us to the Papa Nier from Gestalt. Maybe someday in a mod? Replaying this has been a blast. Although as I have gotten older the side quests started to wear on me. They make narrative sense given Nier's status as a handyman mercenary, but they are not fun to grind out fetch quests. The dialogue and lore you get from the character interactions are still worth seeing in my opinion. But it's very easy to see how they could drive new players crazy. If you don't want to see everything then don't worry about doing the side quests. You only need to do 50% of them for all achievements anyway and only half of them are missable so even if you skip them you should still be able to always come back and get the rest if you decide to achievement hunt. I'd say if Nier is on sale it's worth checking out. But if the concept of the story doesn't intrigue you maybe not.
Masterpiece 🙌. Man everything about this game is masterful, so I'm gonna list everything to stay structured lol. <--------------------------- Story: ---------------------------> What an incredible journey from start to end. I won't be spoiling anything here so I'll keep this short but I think the pacing was great, the themes were strong, characters were memorable, and this will definitely stay with me for a while. I must say there is this twist at some point in the story that changes absolutely everything about the game and its world which I loved. Lastly I would like to mention the infamous........replay the game multiple times to get 4 other endings. I actually had a LOT of fun replaying to get these endings because not only is gameplay fun, but you only have to play halfway through the story which is awesome. Even the few side missions I needed to do to secure all 33 weapons was incredibly worth my time to be able to play and experience the mind-blowing ending E, even if some of these side missions were a bit annoying to either grind or travel for. <--------------------------- Music: ---------------------------> 100% the greatest soundtrack I've ever heard in a video game. Almost, if not every track is memorable, catchy, and really sets the tone during story moments or gameplay. I don't even know how to describe the type of music, they got some sort of dreamlike quality, it's crazy. <--------------------------- Characters: ---------------------------> Everybody here is very memorable, plays their part in the story extremely well, and have such iconic designs. Grimoire Weiss is the goat, Kaine, Emil, Yonah, FYRA, Popola, Devola, Red Bag Man (lol), Shadowlord, Tyrann, hell even the Postman and Louise. There are even parts where you are reading a whole ass novel for an hour or two about a tragic character that makes you understand them better and care about them so much more. <--------------------------- Visuals: ---------------------------> Unbelievable environments, colors, and ideas. The Facade, Aerie, Seafront, Forest of Myth, Junk Heap, Lost Shrine, especially Emil's Mansion. All very memorable by how they play in the story, their unique structures and even the way how gameplay is sometimes framed in different camera angles like in the Junk Heap or combat limitations like in Facade's dungeon. The effects are also incredible whether it be from magic or those insane effects in ending E. <--------------------------- Gameplay: ---------------------------> I honestly love how fundamentally simple combat is. Simply mash or hold X or Y (on controller) to attack, alongside rolling or blocking. But what truly kept me addicted to the combat was the floating book, man!!! Grimoire Weiss turns you into a whole ass mage with a varied set of magic attacks it is awesome. My favorite attacks were the Dark Blast and Lance, but sometimes I swapped to the Gluttony and Whirlwind in situations. And even later on, two-handed swords and spears are introduced....AND THESE ADD EVEN MORE VARIETY. Two-handed swords are very situational for like heavily armored enemies....but the spears????? BEST WEAPONS IN THE GAME. The types of fast combos you can do with these spears feel like transcendent and it basically turned into my main sword type for any encounter lol. I don't have much to say about the enemies since they appear quite formulaic as dark monsters, but I do think they are awesome after knowing that twist. BUT I do want to talk about the boss fights, CAUSE THESE ARE SO COOL. Every boss has such a fun design that either takes advantage of the idea of the shades or just looks cool to look cool. So even if most of their attack patterns are quite simple and they go down pretty quickly, they look cool asf to live rent free in my memories as fun boss fights. <------------------------------------------------- anyways -------------------------------------------------> BUT YEAH 10/10 new hyperfixation acquired. It is quite difficult to contain my excitement for when I can dive into Nier Automata next month.😛
Sigue siendo recomendable jugarlo.
