This game was set in 1916 and is historically accurate. During WWI, a young American spy working for France’s intelligence agency, Lilian, was assigned to retrieve some vital information and rescue a person located in Germany. She was paired with a young French man, Emile, who is short-tempered and grumpy. The two could work together to achieve their goal, or she could abandon him and risk being caught by the German guards. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3292349109 The writing style is excellent. I've enjoyed all the routes. Each one unfolds differently and portrays the characters nicely. The character development is exciting. When you think you dislike a character, the next scene makes you feel for them. The emotions were captured nicely. I even enjoyed the soundtrack. Every line has its atmosphere. It worked nicely and disconnected you from the real world and into theirs as you read. There is a fascinating aspect that might throw you off at the beginning of the game: the characters speak different languages, French, German, and English; you'll get a French line and a translation below it. I was confused initially, but it was enjoyable as when two characters speak a language, the people around them wouldn't understand it or be alarmed. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3272559427 The choices are limited; only three major choices branch to different routes, and from there, you'll keep reading without making any choice. I don't mind that, as I've enjoyed the writing and the characters. You have two love interests to choose from; I will not spoil that because both of them get a very likable character development. Even the main character, Lilian, changes her personality depending on your chosen route. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3272560123 The artwork is outstanding. I love the characters' style and coloring so much, and the artist did a fantastic job with all of them. There is even a slight animation with their expressions as they speak. I also liked that you could collect and view some major artwork scenes in the gallery. I miss one of the artworks, but this could be because I'm alternating between playing the game on my laptop and PC, and it doesn't have Cloudsave yet. You also have only six save slots. Pros: +Interesting well-written story. +Interesting characters. +Good character development. +Beautiful character design and scenery artwork. +Beautiful soundtracks. +Multiple endings and routes. +Gallary with all artworks. +Good game length. +Steam achievements. Cons: -No Cloudsave. While the endings might not be satisfying for some people, I think they are realistic. I highly recommend it to people looking for a good read and enjoy historical VNs. UPDATE: I finally had a chance to replay, including the new bonus content, which was a nice touch. It was still fantastic the second time around. The reservations I had previously have been greatly assuaged by the confirmation that there are sequels in the works and I am so excited for more! On this basis I really can't recommend the game enough. I will leave my previous review below.

I do have some reservations, but honestly, it's good. Like, really good. Aside from the fact the premise is right up my alley, the writing is incredibly compelling. The character interactions are really well done and make each male lead charming in his own way. The game has a deft hand at both excruciating tension and sizzling attraction, but there are moments of levity too with really impeccable comedic timing. Other aspects betray what a labour of love this must have been: the amount of art, the fact all the French and German was translated, the effort put in to make the music feel like a movie score. As other reviews note, there are very few choices, but I didn't mind much since the story is entertaining regardless. I honestly loved playing this game, but at the same time, I am hesitant to recommend it wholeheartedly because it's sort of unfulfilling. I guess it wasn't quite what I expected based on the demo, the marketing as an otome game, and the price point. First, I wish it were longer. A fast reader can get through it in 5 hours, which I'm not really mad about given how much fun I had, but the endings always felt a bit abrupt and there is no epilogue or bonus content at the end. I would have loved to learn more about the male leads, especially Anton (omg Anton), or have the aftermath fleshed out a bit more. Secondly, I think the game didn't quite meet my expectations either as a spy story or a romance story. The game opens with the MC, Lillian, coolly and expertly seducing a man for information. I kinda thought the rest of the game would have more of that. Instead, Lillian is sent off on a mission that has little relevance to her primary training, and because of a near total lack of planning and experienced support, she basically has to wing it through the entire mission. On top of that she exercises very poor judgement more than once. It's natural things would go wrong and she'd make mistakes, but I think her blunders would have been more tolerable if she also got a chance to succeed and show off her skills a bit more, and if the story dwelt more on how poorly planned the mission was. Even so, that would be fine if not for the fact the romances weren't quite satisfying enough either. There's plenty of romantic moments in each path and boatloads of chemistry between Lillian and the male leads, so that's not the issue. And while it's a bit silly that everyone gets so swept up by their feelings in the circumstances, the characters know that too and it's the point of the game anyway so that's not a big problem either. It's because almost every single time the romance starts going somewhere it gets interrupted. I assumed that the game was holding back in order to build up to a big pay off at the end, but as some other reviews mention, that's not the case. It's realistic - mostly - but not very satisfying as a player. Personally I don't think you need happy endings to count as an otome game, but in that case I'd prefer that the game compensates by offering more during the story so you still feel like there was a complete arc. Instead I felt like the romances never quite got off the ground, so the endings were a little deflating. I can't stress enough that this game has so much going for it and was really fun to play but I'm kind of clinging to the hope they'll be making an extended version or a sequel so my impressions don't have to end like this. I am going to replay now that achievements have been added and will update my review if my thoughts change.
I spy a bit of a thriller
Love & Country is a tale of a young, multilingual American woman, Lillian Sinclair, recently through finishing school in Paris, who has been picked up by the French intelligence agency Deuxième Bureau and trained in the art of seduction for the purpose of espionage work in the first world war.
Story
We begin with Lillian attending a social/fundraising event with her handler, and during this, we get our first taste of her training being put to the test. The museum within which the event is being held, is beautifully presented and sets the scene well for what is to come. Once the event is over, Lillian is promptly informed that her first field mission is upon her. She is to travel into Germany – enemy territory – and attempt to rescue a deep-undercover agent who has been in place for an extended period, and is now both very ill and the subject of his hosts' suspicions. Lillian quickly discovers that she is not being sent on this mission alone, but is being assigned a partner who has “complimentary skills”. Upon meeting her newly assigned partner at a rowdy pub, she finds that he is arrogant, rude, impatient, fond of drinking and also smokes. Furthermore, he has never been outside of France and does not speak a word of German.. but – he just had to be devilishly handsome to go with it all, didn't he?
Gameplay
There are only two player choices to make in the game, and whilst many visual novel readers may enjoy the player agency provided by a series of choices, there is no denying that in the huge majority of such cases, a large amount of options results in a weakening of the narrative in some, if not most, of the variations. Such is the strength of writing in this game, however, that the decision to keep options to just two very important ones, was totally the right thing to do. After agreeing to meet her new partner, Emile, at the train station for the trip to neutral Switzerland before crossing the border; we are presented with our first choice when he does not turn up on time; and the second and final option comes at around the halfway point. After making my second selection, I had expected the story to start wrapping up, with my decision affecting the final outcome quite soon. So it came as a big surprise when the result provided me with a fully independent and deeply absorbing branch, ultimately allowing the game to supply me with a common route, two mid-sections, and four entirely different second halves.
Graphics
The art in this game is nothing short of wonderful. The style fits the period to perfection. Sprites are large and restricted to upper body and face only, giving much more detail than in a typical anime-style full body version, as seen below: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3278677332 Faces are partially animated, with moving eyes and subtle expression changes. There is a large gallery containing 57 CGs, and some of these have more than one frame, so by clicking on them, you are taken to the next frame of an animation or even the picture which followed on in the relevant scene – meaning that there are actually more to view than in the initial gallery presented. As attractive as the LIs are, when they are presented in CG form, their appearance goes up another level. It is all but impossible not to be enamoured with both of them. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3278678104 Backdrops convey the era expertly, the style used wholly lending itself to that early 1900s feel. Colour is used with great effect, and the inclusion of people within several backgrounds really brings that sense of life to proceedings. Some of them also alter in keeping with the narrative. For example, when we are told that someone is served a beer, said beer appears within the picture.
User Interface
The huge majority of functions you'd hope to find are present. From the settings menu, there is a full screen/windowed option, text speed and volume control; and in-game the only thing I could see missing is the relatively low-importance ability to adjust text bar opacity. With the ability to hide it being present, I don't see this as an issue at all. Assistive voicing is accessible with a press of the V key, and though I didn't spot an alternative font option, the standard one provided is very easy to read, and therefore very unlikely to cause the huge majority of readers any difficulty. Character speech appears in the language of the conversation in progress, be that French, German, or English; and if either of the former, then English is also provided simultaneously between parentheses underneath. Occasionally, a word or two within the text will appear in magenta, and clicking this brings up a brief explanation inset mid-screen, which removes itself with another click (anywhere other than the coloured word involved), thereby serving as an instant, convenient glossary without having to jump to a menu: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3278679124
Sound
If you've followed the devlogs leading up to the release of this game (I hadn't – I only found it from the Steam NextFest a couple of weeks prior to this review) then you'd be aware that the composer for this game suffered an injury which delayed progress. Happily he recovered to complete the job and it is very easy to understand why the devs waited for him rather than seek someone else to try and meet an earlier release deadline. In keeping with the brilliant writing and equally impressive graphics, the music in this game also pulls its weight in delivering an authentic wartime atmosphere. Every piece fits so ideally within the whole that it is obvious that the score is a bespoke volume of work.
Experience
Introducing the characters ahead of Lillian's mission gives the reader a stress-free opportunity to become acquainted with them, their personalities and strengths and weaknesses, and this pays off later in the game. Once she arrives at the German border, however, the story delivers a constant sense of looming jeopardy. One misstep from our heroine and you feel that disaster will strike. Which feels entirely appropriate for an inexperienced spy on a mission in enemy territory during a war. There is much more to Emile than the roughshod veneer we are initially presented with, and the other potential love interest, the German counterintelligence agent Anton; also has different sides to his personality and despite his position as a clear antagonist, he is much easier to fall for than to oppose; which again serves as a nod to the quality of the characterisation. Parents of potential younger readers should be aware that there are spicy scenes within the whole, and whilst I'll refrain from adding anything further to that for spoiler reasons, a forewarning that these scenes are descriptively intimate should not be ignored; however there are no explicit visuals so a young child casually watching off to one side should be quite safe.
Verdict
Quite simply, this is an outstanding debut from Guhuhu Games (I'd love to know how that name came about!) Katie and Juliana have excelled themselves and can feel very proud of the result of their efforts. Any visual novel fan who enjoys a romantic thriller skilfully written with an intelligent adult audience in mind, ought to love this. Well worth full purchase price, no questions asked. It's also worth noting that the team are thinking about creating extra missions for our heroine, and there is also the possibility of character voicing being added at a later date. I wasn't sure what to expect coming into this VN, as it was the first release by this new developer, and the setting sounded very unique. Now, after finishing two of the endings, I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It is very obvious that a lot of love and passion went into creating this VN, as not only the writing and translation in general are great, but the developers also put in some extra love. For example, since the story takes place during WW1 in both France and Germany, the game actually shows the text in not only English but also the original languages spoken, so whenever the characters are speaking either German or French, the game shows both that and an English translation. I don't think I have ever seen it done like this in any VN I have played, but it was actually pretty nice. Since I also speak German, I can even confirm that the translation there is also correct. Another small thing they added is that for certain words, like for example a specific headwear, they added an optional description giving some additional historical information. What is also great is the art, especially the character models they look phenomenal. There is also a great soundtrack of background music that plays fitting music for all the moments creating an even better reading atmosphere. When it comes to the story, there is one main path, but there are four different outcomes depending on three choices, and the different paths really do make a big difference, so it is well worth trying all the different paths. The focus of the story is definitely the action of her being a spy and her trying to use her seduction, but she is also fighting against her natural attraction to the two male options. Since I don't want to spoil anything, I am not going to go into any more depth. The only thing I do want to mention is that the endings are a little lacking or abrupt imo and could have been a bit more fleshed out and more well rounded off. In general, though, I really enjoyed the story and the length of the VN, as it is a bit like a good movie in its overall length for a singular playthrough. This is probably also my only critique point as the price is a little on the higher side for the length (in total maybe like 7 hours), but I can understand why it is like that as all the art is handdrawn and there was a lot of music custom done for the game. Also the romance might be a little fast paced, but thats also because of the game's length, and it isn't all that unrealistic either as acting in the heat of the moment isn't all that uncommon. Overall, a pleasant surprise and a nice change from the usual VN stories you often expect. I hope to see more of the developers in the future as they clearly have some skills. I NEED more of this. I felt incredibly immersed and if historical accuracy is your thing you'll definetly enjoy this. It felt short, but as the first title of an indie company I can't hold it against the developers, they did amazing, in the end it just feels like a good film length wise. Immediately after my first playtrough I went scouring the Internet for more content or fanfics or anything only to realise the game literally relesead yesterday. I hope it gets the success it deserves and hopefully the story continues EDIT: Having now played all of the routes the game isnt as short as I assumed at first, definetly worth the money. I also have to appreciate the soundtrack, the music is coded in such a perfect way to hit well with the story and the art is just gorgeous. Definetly a direct hit for a new developer
This is such a wonderful game! About an hour in I accidentally saw some spoilers that
there's no happy ending romance-wise in either of the routes
and was seriously contemplating if I should continue playing at all, and I'm really, really glad I decided to stick to it. Once I got a bit further into the story, the way it ended made perfect sense. And the story itself is great, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, the writing, and every single one of the characters. I don't think leaning into a more conventional otome finale could do it justice. There are a couple of things that are worth mentioning though: - There are (literally) three choices throughout the whole game. One in the beginning that branches into two routes, and then one more in each route to determine how it would unfold. As a result, you have four fairly different stories, and while all of them are good, I wouldn't call it interactive. - If you're looking for a nice feel-good romantic story, uhh... probably look further? As I've said, it's a lovely story, but not really what one would expect from an otome game.
I already knew from the demo I needed this, I am somewhat fanatical of early world war romance dating sim lover; especially when interwoven with realistic times and sexism, it brings the story to life. I had only played a small portion of the demo and was not prepared for Devilishly handsome Emile <3 So far i'm enamoured with the MC being a tough and independent cookie in her own right and have only met Emile but my goodness I am in love. My pros and cons so far in my time (don't mind my hours I stall haha) -- Pros: -Music gives off an old timey air, also adds to the mystique of the story -Absolutely gorgeous artwork that will immerse and make you swoon -Wonderful writing so far and wonderful characters -Additional historical info for keywords to clue you in further (love extra knowledge) -Both men are dashing, again have only met Emile but he's gorgeous and boy do I love a bad boy -For fans of old timey romance this is fantastic -Swoonworthy moments with a bit of mature themes which is wonderful Cons as of now: -No voice acting, very minor as it is indie and to be honest it works wonderfully without -Demo save errored (for me not much of an issue I had barely begun but for others be wary) -Not much else yet Highly recommended for those historical and historically accurate romance lovers with a wonderfully seductive MC who treads her own path in a time fraught with sexism and being single as a woman was frowned upon. Love the detailing and story thus far and can't wait to delve further into my man Emile and meet my other beau soon. Great price and men well worth it!
Oooh, this one may not be for everyone but it sure as hell is for me. The premise is terrific, the art is gorgeous and the number of bespoke illustrations is impressive, the original soundtrack sets a perfect tone for the story, and while there are very few choices available, each one branches the player off into completely unique narrative territory. This is the rare visual novel in which you will never have to skip content you've previously seen to find something new, since it is possible to return to those choice moments directly from the main menu. My sole reservation when recommending it to others involves the endings, so here is my gentle spoiler warning. For some players, the fact that the conflict between Love & Country (I see what you did there, devs) always resolves in favour of Country may be a dealbreaker. It didn't bother me in the slightest; I don't think romance stories need a HEA or a HFN, and the game certainly earns its endings, but I acknowledge my tastes are definitely not universal in this case. I am seated in the theatre, eagerly awaiting the next project from this studio. I have been won over by the style and panache and the very good kissing scenes, cannot wait to see what comes next!
4/5。游戏缺点主要集中在emile(黑毛男)上,然而我实在很喜欢anton(金毛男)。
