Games like this really make me wish there was a “mixed” option for Steam reviews because while I think it has some major flaws I don’t think it was a bad game or that people should avoid it. But at the same time, I really can’t say I recommend it. It dodges the pitfall that many games like this fall into (being childishly wacky about their strange premise) but it did leave me wishing it leaned more into its silliness and unique world. All your love interests being non-human felt inconsequential though most of it. The characters are well designed and the story can be very cute and poignant. It got some real, genuine smiles out of me at its stronger moments but for the runtime those moments are too spaced out due to excessive padding. It has some great lines and jokes but it desperately needs a firm but loving editor’s hand. There is so much filler text and unnecessary wordiness that it really bogs it down and makes the story drag. I do like that they included all three characters in every playthrough. Often with long games like this I’ll not want to play multiple times and feel a gap where I don’t know the cast so getting to know Robert and Taylor despite setting Stella up with Day was a big plus. The art was also a highlight for me, I loved the harsh black shading and unique but relatable art style. It also had way more art than a lot of games like this have which goes a long way with fleshing out a story.
2/10 not funny bad, just bad bad 1ST achievement 97.1% have and that's actually really high for games sooo lots of people start this game. its the fall off that tells you everything you need to know 2nd 77.2 3rd 43.2 4th 27.8
The game had so much potential with an interesting concept and vibrant art style, but the execution missed the mark for me. The dialogue choices all leaned heavily into awkward or cringey interactions. While a little cringe can be funny, it felt overwhelming when every option was cringey, leaving no room for more genuine or diverse responses. Playing with friends made it fun for a while, but without that, I probably wouldn't have stuck with it as long. There also seemed to be some strange responses from characters, as if they didn’t align with the choices I made, which took me out of the immersion. If the developers added a mix of more relatable and varied options, I think this game could really resonate with dating sim fans who enjoy a balance between humor and heartfelt moments. Overall, this is a creative game with potential for improvement in choice variety and character response accuracy. I'm hopeful to see updates that make it a stronger experience for dating sim lovers!
Overall Rating: 8.75/10
I bought this on sale, hoping to get my mind off of reality for a moment. But then this game hits reality so hard, each companion actually feels human, despite their non-human statuses. It's about friendship, highschool, romance--but there's a deeper flavour to it. You get to "feel" for the characters, and the more you talk to them through phone or through casual interactions, the more you actually get engulfed in their own worlds. They have their own conflicts, issues, but nevertheless, the game doesn't shy away from addressing these personal issues. You want to be there for everyone, but you also have your own personal struggles. You can mold your character, Stella, to be very straightforward or being patient with responses. Finishing this indie game made me look back at my own friendships, and how I could've handled some better. It made me step back from the digital world to reflect on myself--and how I can be better holistically. It's a game I didn't expect I needed, but definitely deserved. It's a delight to have a Raptor boyfriend, a Bigfoot boyfriend, and a Fae girlfriend through college.
so much potential and just a disappointing meh result
Wheres my Raptor boyfriend?! I need one NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
This game is charming! The narrative is well written and didn't make me feel bored between choices. Your choices have a significant impact on your story and who you end up with which is nice and consistent. My favourite thing about this game is that they turn the icon mechanic that pops up when you've chosen the right option with a prospective love interest into a COLLECTABLE ART PIECE! So a poem, a comic/drawing or a cassette song! Its so fun and makes choosing the right option WAY more rewarding! It is so fun that you get to date queer cryptids and be honest about being an awkward human just trying to get by in high school. A delightful change of pace from dating sims out there! BONUS: Woohoo for it being made in Ontario, Canad <3
Raptor Boyfriend is a quirky 90s dating sim about an awkward teenager romancing some cryptids in her high school. The humor of this was very quirky, sometimes bordering on cringe, but that felt perfect for the setting and how weird the protagonist was meant to be. Some of the stories were surprisingly dark, but they were handled in a gentle and mature way that made uncovering them satisfying. I adored the casual queer rep, and I really liked how the characters all came together, even the ones you don't pursue. This was a short and sweet game with lots of charming moments and some pretty art scenes, and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a good, silly dating sim.
