I forced my way through two routes in Glass Heart, and I really didn’t think I could make it through any more. But then I started Will’s story, which continued into Brayson’s, and even though they weren’t the most amazing otome romances ever, there was something there that kept me entertained to the very end. Unfortunately, this is an otoge that’s all over the place with its storytelling. One moment it's a sweet tale of two people finding love in a difficult time of a young woman's life, and the next you’re tossed into the middle of soap opera-ish drama that had me wanting to slap ALL of the characters silly. Yet, it was the murder mystery that popped up out of nowhere that won me over. I just wish it didn’t take playing through two of the most frustratingly boring routes ever before I discovered that there was more to this otome than overly-contrived melodrama. My feelings for this game are so conflicted. To be honest, there’s a lot of good here, but the bad is so groan-worthy that it really drags things down. Love interest quality is probably the most important aspect of any good otome. I can forgive dumb stories and the worst clichés ever if the guys are in the very least likeable. Fortunately, half of the guys here are in the likable camp, and they all become much more likable once you turn OFF the voice acting (except Tamaki whose VA performance is sublime). Will, Brayson, and Tamaki work well as love interests, mostly because their stories don’t revolve around the MC possibly dying at any given moment. It also helps that Meira has a bit of agency in their routes, which gives the romances room to develop and breathe. As for the other guys? Outside of having nonsensical storylines, they’re just…bland? Nathan is the most boring billionaire ever, and Jay has no discernible personality outside of a doctor madly in love with his patient. Then there’s Eli. I’m not a fan of tsunderes in the first place, but this guy has absolutely no redeemable personality traits. I like dickish characters, they just need to have some charm, and this guy has none. My biggest gripe, though, is that for most of the confessions the guys won’t stop gushing about how much Meira means to them and that they love her so damn much they’d give up everything they ever cared about for her, and that she’s their moon in the sky, the loveliest creature ever created, blah blah blah. Repeat after me… LESS. IS. MORE. Confessions feel way more sincere when the guy isn’t professing his undying love for a woman he’s barely known two weeks. At least the quieter moments as the characters are wrestling with their blossoming emotions (assuming they hadn’t already fallen madly in love at first sight) were done well. If only we could’ve gotten more romantic tension and less profuse declarations of love... So is there anything I actually DO like? Well, yes. Will and Tamaki’s romances are actually pretty great with some really good romantic tension and fun stories. Toss in Brayson, and you’ve got half of a good game. But is it worth $20 for those three alone? Honestly, it depends on how much melodrama you can stomach. I suggest waiting for a decent discount and going in with your expectations squarely in check. There’s a good time to be had here, just avoid reading through Jay and Nathan’s routes first. Actually, just avoid them altogether. It's a really meh game. All the guys like her because she's friendly, nice etc yes I get it but she's so boring. I chalked it up to her being like that bsc she's been cooped up in the hospital for so long but it just didn't hit the spot for me. Lacked any suspense; extremely predictable. It felt that the old conventional love trope : Helpless girl, saviour guy, evil villainess. Spoiler here: why would you keep quiet when someone is threatening you? Yes, the guy might not believe you but aren't you gonna even try? Screen is really laggy, crashes when you try and skip scenes. Just an overall 1. Would not recommend.
“No one knows when they will die… No one knows what’s beyond the next moment. Pursue your passions… Live and fight for your dreams… But most importantly… Love. Love what you do and love others.” -A line from Glass Heart Warning: There are some potentially triggering scenes in the game (read the Mature Content Description). There is an option to turn on an option called Safe Spaces, see photo for explanation. I had this turned off. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3090193742
Plot
What would you do if you had a month left to live? What choice would you make with that time? Meira, is the girl with a glass heart and has lived her entire life in hospitals. Her heart has begun to give out and at best she only has six more months to live. The only chance she has at living a longer life is to get a heart transplant. The catch is that it only has a 20% chance of success. With one month until her surgery, Meira has decided that she wants to at least try to live her life to the fullest with the time she has left. Depending on what choice you choose with your month left, is what determines which of the six love interests route you get on. One of the love interest’s route is locked and must be unlocked by playing through one of the routes. Each of the characters have two endings, one bad and one good, with two epilogues: Seductive and Sweet. There are no sudden endings throughout the route, so your choices only determine which ending you get once you finish the route. The game makes a noise letting you know which choice is the correct one to make. There is no way to turn this off. This is helpful for those who don’t wish to get the bad endings, though if a player wants to get all of the CGs, then they will need to play the bad endings. I think the Seductive and Sweet epilogues are one of my favorite parts of the game. The Seductive epilogues are so, so good. Although I have to mute the game for the epilogues because it is extremely cringy to hear the VA voice some of those lines and make kissing noises.
Sounds
The voice acting is generally very good overall. It can be a bit hit or miss at times though. I think most of the side characters actually have the best voice acting. Unfortunately, there are some characters with mics that aren’t as clean sounding where the mic settings could be set better. Thankfully, there are only a few side characters where this is the case, so it doesn’t make the experience painful. There doesn’t seem to be much quality control with some of the names, especially when it comes to Tamaki and Meira. The VAs were saying them at least two different ways and it wasn’t very consistent. Meira does not have a voice actor. The only exception to this is in the special movies. I wish that she had a voice the entire game, especially because the VA is exactly how I pictured her voice sounding. The sound balance for the videos, opening and special movies, could be worked on a bit. The music is overpowering over the voices. This is okay for the intro movie since it has subtitles, but the special movies do not have subtitles. There is no way to listen to past voice lines with the log.
Art
The sprites are well drawn and they’ve got a few different poses/facial expressions. Whenever they talk, their mouths move, except for Meira. The unimportant side characters that actually have sprites, like the nurses, don’t have eyes. It’s kind of unnerving. The sprites also move around the screen and move up closer and back away depending on what they are doing. Sometimes the sprite even reflects what is being said, like they took their glasses off and the sprite did. Meira doesn’t have a sprite for bits of the game, and it’s almost non-existent in Nathan’s routes. This is most likely because she is wearing a different outfit that does not have a sprite for, but it’s kind of a shame.
UI & System
There is no name in the text box when the character is having an inner monologue. It would have been nice to have the characters name and somehow indicate it was their inner thoughts instead. Some of the characters also cannot stick to one name for Meira and go back and forth between the options. Tamaki jumps between his nickname for her and her real name and Nathan jumps between calling her by her first name and last name. The only keyboard controls that the game has is “enter” which progresses the text box. Space bar does not progress the text, nor does it hide the UI which I assume is supposed to work based on one of the game updates history. This is especially annoying because the text box does block out a bit of the background art and character sprites. Even when a CG pops up there’s no real way to look at it in full until you go to view it in the gallery. Some of the art and even UI art is not very crisp and a bit fuzzy. The chapter intermission screens also aren’t as clear with the moving background. There is a way to hide the UI on the image in the gallery, except for when it has a second image and when you are viewing the second image. There are a few errors with words missing letters, being misspelled, or even some sentences missing their periods. There’s also an excessive use of exclamation marks occasionally. If the skip button is highlighted and the text hasn’t been read, there is no way to advance the text until you click the skip button again to turn it off. There is no confirmation for overwriting saves, yet there is a confirmation asking if you wish to load a save. There is also no rollback function or quick save or quick load. The diary is a nice touch with the updates as you make progress through the route by choosing the correct choices, and the little doodles are cute as well. It’s possible to miss when an update happens though if you aren’t remembering to check it every now and then. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3090202485
Final Thoughts
Meira is a very stubborn MC, but it’s nice that she knows exactly what she wants. She can occasionally get on the players nerves because all she says sometimes is that her life doesn’t matter, because she is going to die anyway. I was unsure if I would find any of the love interest’s interesting when I first started the game, as none of them really stood out to me, personality-wise, appearance-wise, or even job-wise. I was thankfully proven wrong and actually enjoyed most of the guys and their routes overall. Brayson and Tamaki absolutely have my heart. This is not a slow burn romance. This is a “the guy has fallen for her immediately or has been in love with her before the game even began”. If that’s not your cup of tea, then this may not be the game for you. If you go in expecting the guy to already be head over heels for Meira and her to be absolutely oblivious and think that the guy could never love her back, then it can still be enjoyed. I am very happy with how the happy ending ended for each of the characters and felt very satisfied when I finished the game. Everything feels like it’s wrapped up very well. Each route is also varied for the plot and story that it has. If you want a kind of overarching storyline to have some of the plot and characters not spoil other routes, I suggest this order: Nathan/Eli -> Tamaki -> Will -> Brayson -> Jay Otome Lovers wishes to thank Eternal Love Studios for providing a free review copy for this game. I have closed this game without saving more than once on accident because of this button press because of muscle memory of expecting it to open/close the menu. It is extremely infuriating. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3090215193
Glass Heart tells the story of a young woman called Meira who was born with a very fragile heart. She has spent all her life in the hospital and has now gotten news that her heart is finally failing on her for good and at best has 6 months to live. Good news is, they finally managed to get a heart donor for her! bad news is it only has a 20% survival rate and needs to be done in a month. Meira upon hearing this decides she wants to spend what could potentially be her last month to have a life that isn't simply living in the hopital. The game has 6 routes, what route you'll get into will depend on what Meira decides to do. Now to talk about the game, Each route provides something different that made it easy to get lost into, I can honestly say while I do have routes I really favour over the other. I did not have a route I disliked or even found boring. Not to say they were perfect, some routes have stuff that made me think this is just for the sake of drama and actions Meira did that frustrated me. For Meira herself, she is a nice MC. She starts of as naive and sheltered, and maybe a bit passive at times. But many of this can really be explained by being stuck in a hospital all her life, but she is also talented, bright, stubborn and strike back at people who go at her (..most of the time). Also loved each of the LIs, despite the routes being arounf 2-3 hours long, each LI, I personally found charming and interesting. It was great being invested in their story as much as Meira's. Other things about this game I liked is that, with the exeption of Meira (the MC), the game is fully voiced. it's uncommon for indie Otomes to be voiced so this was a very nice touch. Anyways, if you like Otomes, I do recomend giving this game a try.
YES, TOTALLY RECOMMEND THIS! Decent writing, good BGM (figured all of them are original), and full-voiced characters (they sound hella good as well). There are a total of 6 routes and each one represents a whole different kind of story and theme. More surprisingly, the dev pulls it through with the same cast. What I mean is it's not the same story with a different pov like other otomes, but the whole damn new story. Mentioning pov, you get to see the guy's pov in their route as well, which is nice to hear what the guy thinks of you once in a while. You can find the plot is similar since some are popular tropes (best friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, second chance, etc.), but it's still unique in its own way, it's like having an old meal with different 'seasoned', or listening to a remix version of an old song. Another plus is that you can choose a sweet or seductive after-story if you want some spicy moments with your boi. :'> My god, I can't stop giving a compliment on this game. I only wish that there will be more people out there who notice this gem. PLEASE HEAR MY PLEAD AND PLAY IT ALREADY!
I started playing this game on stream and both my community and I were immediately compelled by the plot. We have got to know the characters little by little during the prologue and I immediately noticed how some of them attracted me more than others. Jay stole my heart from the second I laid eyes on him, but every single one of them was fascinating in their own way. I played one whole route on stream and we were really happy about how it progressed! I finished the game on my own and it easily became one of my favorite English otome games! There is a route with a particular scene that I believe is the most beautiful scene in otome games ever! (If you want to know, check my twitch). Story, Artwork & Soundtrack “Meira (protagonist), the Glass Hearted Girl, has lived her life in hospital rooms. Years of fighting to survive has resulted in a bittersweet outcome. The surgery that could save her life only has a 20% chance of success. Failure means death. With one month until the operation, the Glass Hearted Girl sets out to experience something worth living for. Will she find the strength to survive or will her heart shatter?” Meira is an incredible heroine. She’s got her flaws but for someone in her situation she surely got through traumatic events with a spine of steal. At times I truly admired her. The game’s prologue is the same for everyone but then, depending on your choices, the story branches into different settings. Each character’s story is different from one another. I appreciated the diary feature in which you can find what the heroine thinks of her suitor and at the same time check on the progress of the relationship. Every single love interest managed to spark curiosity in me, even the ones I liked the least, deep down, seemed charming. The antagonists were great! You’ve got to admire the waiters and the voice actor’s work for this cause they were so great in their roles that they made me truly hate some of the villains! The dramatic events developing through the game surely kept me plastered to the screen. I just couldn’t wait to find out how, after some ups and downs, the story would resolve itself. There are some typos here and there along the many chapters but nothing that keeps you from enjoying the game. The art looks wonderful, from the sprites, to the backrounds to the CGs. It is colorful and never boring. (I thought it was quite funny to see eyeless nurses). The soundtrack is divine! There are a couple of songs I wish we could download! Voice acting Fully voiced English otome game? I was already sold at that. Every voice actor in this game is incredibly talented. The main characters’ voices sound phenomenal and they bring out the essence of their characters to their fullest. Some dramatic scenes are so intense that they brought me to tears! (In a good way!) Most of the side characters sound great, with an exception here and there (example: the Dean at Will and Meire’s college sounds a little bit robotic, probably due to recording voices in different environments?). Content warning The game has got its share of trigger warnings: substance use (consensual and non-consensual), sexual assault, physical assault If you can’t deal with the themes mentioned above, don’t worry! The game offers an awesome feature in which you can just skip the scenes that would make you uncomfortable and get a summary of what happens instead! OVERALL: Story: 8/10 Art: 8/10 Romance: 9/10 Drama: 10/10 Spice: 8/10 Total otome points: 8.5/10 If you prefer playing easy slice-of-life and fluffy games then maybe this visual novel is not made for you but if you are into drama, angst, adventure and even a little bit of danger then you need to give this game a chance!
10/10 Excellence.
This game was really sweet! I have completed 4/6 routes so far and I've enjoyed them. The one thing that has bothered me so far is that there seems to never really be any conflict between the MC/LIs and that can make the story feel a bit bland, but otherwise the art, gameplay and voice acting has been enjoyable.
Play time: 10+ hours (as you can see by my play time thus far) Art: consistently good Music: actually really nice Plot: A few gimmicky parts but overall damn good Price: Decent for $20, If you have the money, get this game. I paid full price and I don't regret it at all. Overall thoughts: This game truly shocked me. It came out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks. The writing, while some of the medical stuff...clearly not completely realistic, is well done. The voice acting is really great. I have to say that each LI VA had some really good sections where they convinced me (ex. Jay, Tamaki, and Brayson). I hope this team makes more VNs. PS, Route order is not terribly important but this is what I would recommend: WILL, ELI/LYFE, NATHAN, TAMAKI, JAY or BRAYSON. PPS, the VA for Tamaki was my fav. I hope they do more roles! <3
YOLOOOO!
