Far Cry 3 is the pinnacle of the 7/10 openworld formula
This foundational game solidified an addictive yet highly repetitive gameplay formula, which Ubisoft beat to death, while other developers figured out how to iterate upon it creatively in the 15 years since. This game was attempting to perfectly realize what the original Far Cry aimed to do 8 years prior, and tried to merge it with a handful of ideas from Far Cry 2, although it gutted a lot of the hardcore elements implemented in FC2 in order to make this iteration as accessible as possible. Some of the changes did improve upon FC2 however. The main one is that enemy camps are conquered and replaced by safehouses and allies once you kill everyone there. Another change that saves time is that when you die during a mission there are checkpoints, so you can pick back up during a difficult section without wasting your time replaying parts you've already beaten or completed.
FC3 is such a good 7/10 that it's essentially an 8.
The game world is fun to explore, with the island paradise still looking pretty good and the northern island, maybe first 3/4 of the game are really great - that's how long the climbing towers to clear the fog of war and conquering enemy camps stays fun (both new additions to the series at the time) - but the game really starts to drag in the southern island towards the very end especially if you're aiming to get all of the collectibles. I was enjoying the game enough at first to go through with searching for all the collectibles, but when I play the next games in the franchise I likely won't because it's only bearable the first time - the rewards were far far too meager to warrant doing that again. What I will say about the south island is that the wingsuit and parachute were good implementations even if they're a bit janky and rough to use compared to something like Just Cause 2 or 3. FC3 is the first game in the franchise to implement the RPG systems with skills to level the character Jason Brody, incentivizing you to engage with the side content, however about 75% of the way through the side content I had already maximized my character, making it all feel relatively worthless to 100% because even more XP was yet to be gained from the remaining 12 story/main missions out of 38 total. FC3 has a lot of side content such as assassinating targets, racing/doing supply runs, doing timed challenges to kill as many enemies as you can called "Trials of the Rakyat," discovering hidden relics, and hunting. Each one rewards you with XP, the latter of which also rewards you with animal hides that are used to craft larger sacks for ammunition, loot, money, and syringes which you craft for healing, fighting, hunting and exploring. Additionally, the music was very decent - mostly dark electronic/EDM productions, but I did wish there was more music because it got very tired, very fast. Far Cry 3 has great gunplay, and solid enemy variety at its core, but what makes it still worth playing are its very compelling, well acted and intriguing characters that feel like so much more (are given more depth) than the stereotypes that they are.
Now I have to dump all the cons that drag the experience down somewhat:
- A minor complaint is leaving the mission area like in a Rockstar game voids the mission and forces you to restart from the checkpoint. - The fall damage is aggressive and egregiously high - There is only one save slot per game even though 3 show up. I guess the other 2 are for if you decided to start another playthrough and wanted to go back to your previous one? This is the downside of the checkpoints, autosave and simplification -- just give me a few more save slots so I can go back to certain points of the game. - You can't remap buttons or customize audio settings. This sucks because music can be too loud over dialogue. But the remapping buttons is an issue because looting bodies and swapping weapons are the same button, so when trying to loot a corpse you will accidentally pick up a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ weapon than your current one more often than not. It creates a lot of time wasting. - The game is definitely still buggy in numerous ways, but it's mostly minor visual things, enemy AI bugging out, or things flying - There is no way to play the co-op campaign anymore after they removed legacy online - And finally the worst thing is having to sign into Ubisoft connect every time you want to play, completely unnecessary and something that sours the experience.
Now some of the things they removed from Far Cry 2 that makes this game worse in some ways (even though as a whole it's mostly superior:
- No more weapons jamming - The fire physics and destruction of nature is noticeably worse. Part of that is the fact that oil on the ground doesn't even catch on fire, which is fairly immersion breaking - No malaria but ehh I didn't care too much for that one - though they added a 4th weapon slot as opposed to FC2's 3, they essentially kept it 3 if you wanted to hold onto the repair tool to fix broken vehicles. Why they didn't just keep that as something in your inventory that you can pull out at any time instead of wasting a weapon slot or spending more time walking around boggles my mind. - the mechanic I definitely missed most though was holding the map in the game while you drove around. Going back to having to pull the map up in a menu in this game sucked because it would constantly take me out of the game to figure out where I wanted to go instead of letting me drive while figuring that out.
Despite my laundry list of complaints, Far Cry 3 holds up very well all these years later and is worth playing for the story and fun albeit flawed exploration. After getting past those annoyances the game is almost an 8 --> 7.8
DELICIOUS
Eu gosto mto desse jogo! Só que o launcher, do nada fica suspendendo a minha conta da Ubisoft e fica me mandando mudar de senha. O que seria melhor é não ter essa porcaria de launcher.
Came back to this game after I played it before nearly a decade ago, to see how it holds up and to reminiscent how good the game was. And to my surprise, it still works well todays age with it's graphics, villains and gameplay. It isn't perfect for sure but it still holds up on it's on as a decent game and one of the best in the Far Cry franchise. But now to the positives and negatives: +Beautiful visuals, music and good sound design; +Good gameplay/gunplay, not the best but it holds up; +Villains are amazing, super engaging and interesting; +Good story and narrative; +Good side content with it's minigames; -Sometimes visual bugs of the character doing random actions and such; -Uninteresting side quests, that are simple gather/kill something; -Probably from the latest updates to achievements and bug fixes made it so you need 3rd party software to make the game 64bit and not crash every 30-60 minutes; -Main character's saved friends aren't that fleshed out and are kind of tossed away usually. No side quests related to them or anything of sorts; -Repetitive gameplay. Of course, it's a shooter and a Far Cry game, there's usually nothing do but to collect collectibles or do mediocre side quests; I still like the game after so many years and realizing problems after growing up, but that doesn't mean the rating and love for the game dwindled. 8/10.
