Worth it just for the narration and story.
absolute cinema game
This game is beautiful. It's worth playing just to see it.
To this day, I still look back fondly at the hours I sank into this game. For reasons I still can’t explain, I was completely obsessed with this tiny lad sprinting around obliterating random objects while a Sir David Attenborough-sounding elderly gentleman narrated my every act of vandalism like it was a BBC wildlife documentary. Absolute masterpiece.
My gametime is inflated about 3-4h because I forgot it on. I finished about two thirds of the game and I ended up shelving it because it kept randomly crashing due to System.random.next() being less than 0. Can't believe this is unsolved after 15 years. Don't buy it, there are better games to spend your time and money on.

Jeux sympa
Was a very rage-inducing learning curve for me compared to Hades where the combat felt completely fair. Lots of falling, failing block timers, picking up questionable weapon combinations, and using suboptimal skills. The narration rules, the story made me stay for another little New Game Plus playthrough for the other ending. Darren Korb is goated, very authentic versatile soundtrack to accompany you and help create proper immersion even if all you're constantly doing is just getting your ♥♥♥♥ kicked in. Other than the combat, the process of building the Bastion, completing Vigils in the Memorial, upgrading gear and earning experience was satisfying and the progression felt rewarding despite the skill floor getting progressively higher. All in all, as much as it was one of the most tilting learning curves I experienced, the successful completion of levels and some challenges felt all the more satisfying, and as much as I was about to start ripping my hair from my head at first, the story progression and the sense of accomplishment went harder and healed the frustration away.
The thing that impresses me the most about Bastion is how early it did many of its ideas. So many of its gameplay concepts are echoed in indie action games to this day, and I hadn't realized they began all the way back then. The combat feels a little clunky to me these days, but rolling around and hitting enemies with different weapons is still fundamentally fun. The story also has a fairly weighty message behind it, that will only continue to age better.
