Game has it's bugs but it's paradox games... The game overall is a complex political war sim of the victorian period. it's class
Game has massively improved since launch. Improvements are still needed, but definitely a very solid grand strategy title now.

Good to understand concepts you've ignored your entire life
I love the idea behind this game, but found playing it a frustrating experience. In particular, it is almost impossible to balance your actions against the interests of the various internal factions. These seem to have been fabricated for the game rather than taken from history, and how to deal with them is not really explained. I love hugely complex games, but am struggling to understand this one.
Victoria 3 is nearly unplayable as a small nation. The old "request to become a protectorate" button is gone. Now you can only become one if a Great Power declares war on you and forces it, and the AI rarely bothers. Workarounds exist but suck: bait a Great Power into a diplomatic play and offer protectorate status as the reward, exploit AI logic by joining a war against your target overlord, or grind +200 leverage for a Power Bloc (host their embassy, trade, accept investment) which makes you a subject, just not technically labeled "protectorate." Even then it's a downside, since protectorates get taxed and economically exploited by their overlord. Mods like Improved Diplomacy and Subject Manager are outdated band-aids, not fixes. Paradox: please bring back the voluntary protectorate request.
