About
Underrail is an old-school turn-based isometric indie role-playing game that focuses on exploration and combat.
The game is set in a distant future, when life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.
The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught amidst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as they violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.
The game's turn-based combat features many different weapon types - pistols, rifles, crossbows, energy weapons, sledgehammers, knives and more, each with their own advantages and drawbacks.
The player is also able to learn powerful psionic abilities from one of the three psionic schools:
Metathermics - Burn your enemies alive or freeze them to death.
Psychokinesis - Use the power of telekinesis for offensive or defensive purposes or electrocute your foes.
Thought Control - Assault the minds of your enemies by overloading them, instilling overwhelming fear, creating deadly hallucinations and more.
For those looking to avoid direct confrontation, the game offers a set of subterfuge skills. Move around the world in stealth like a shadow, lockpicking doors and hacking computers. If people have something you want, you can often just pickpocket them. But if it does come to blows, you can use devious traps to stack the odds in your favour.
Underrail features an elaborate item crafting system. A vast majority of the armor, weapons and some other items encountered in the game can be crafted, and some are exclusively acquired through it. Crafted equipment tends to be superior to that which is scavenged or purchased in terms of raw numbers, provided you are investing in your crafting skills.

Great game with insane vibes of classic Fallout games. For me it was like an adventure back in time to my childhood. A post-apocalyptic world where you explore and travel, trying to help people (or not), surviving and improving your character. It also has a lot of similarities with Fallout, but it is different - we have stats, skills and perks, but you can max out much more things than you could in Fallout, and the crafting system and psionic abilities were very cool to try. The story is interesting and has its twists, characters are great, but some systems were pretty hardcore which can let down some players. The idea that you can't sell everything in one place is interesting, but in the end I just had to run all over the world just to sell some stuff and buy slightly better gear for hours. Once I spent 4 hours just running from one vendor to another looking for better gear. Also at some point there are encounters with infinite enemies - there are some mechanics and conditions to play around it, but mostly it is just pack after pack after pack of enemies, which is very frustrating, especially when I was used to cleaning up every corner and checking every stone. :) Apparently the game was made by 12 people, so considering that - it is just one of the best indie games I have ever played. 9/10 from me and I am really looking forward to the next game - Underrail 2 is currently in development.

Wow, what a game. I'm writing this just after finishing my playthrough. I wasn't expecting much going into underrail, I just thought It was a game with a cool looking art style and some fun turn based combat. Coming out of it though, I'm blown away. For my playthrough I tried to look up as little as possible, I searched for a guide on what some of the attributes do and some of the later perks I might be able to get but aside from that I went in completely blind. I ended up using a burst, assault rifle / shooting spree, aimed shot, sniper rifle build late game, with absolutely zero stealth. I'd just run in guns blazing and come out on top most of the time. I decided not to use the psi abilities in my playthrough so I could focus on being better with my guns and other equipment, although the psi abilities do look like a blast to use. One of the most well written and engaging story's and worlds I've taken part in. I don't have much experience with the crpg genre only having played fo1 and fo2. But I know that it absolutely lives up to and may even exceed those games. I can't wait to see what this team gets up to with underrail 2, because they completely smashed it with the first game.
Underrail is one of the biggest surprises I've played in years. As someone who generally prefers action RPGs, I fully expected to bounce off a turn-based CRPG. Instead, it became one of my favorite RPG experiences. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize how some core mechanics actually worked, yet somehow the game remained compelling for nearly 240 hours. Much of that is due to Oddity XP, which may be one of my favorite leveling systems in any RPG. Exploration is progression. Curiosity is progression. Every locked door, abandoned facility, strange artifact, or suspicious cave feels worth investigating. The game never stopped introducing new places, factions, mysteries, and problems to solve. Every time I thought I had a handle on the world, it grew larger. By the end, I had become deeply invested in areas and lore that the game barely explains, and was annoyed to discover that a seemingly minor decision made near the beginning locked me out of an entire secret faction. This game is unapologetically old-school. It is ugly. It is occasionally obtuse. It can be brutally unforgiving. It has no interest in meeting the player halfway, and at several times I was convinced I had wandered somewhere I had absolutely no business being. I loved it. What started as a game about surviving underground eventually became a game about discovering what was hidden there. Not for everyone. Absolutely for anyone who loves handcrafted worlds, meaningful exploration, and figuring things out for themselves. 5/5 oddities.
I got this is a part of a humble bundle. You need a build guide. You can lose in character creation. You can waste several hours only to be stuck.
Underrail is easily one of the best RPGs on Steam. The sheer amount of content in this game is insane. I have reached the end of the game several times, and I still haven't seen all of its quests. There are literally hundreds of them. There is an absurd amount of content here, and it is one of the game's greatest strengths. There are also dozens of viable builds. I've reached the end of the game with everything from a pure melee build, pistol builds, sniper builds, and even a pure psi build. They are all viable in their own ways. One of the things I enjoy the most about Underrail is starting a new game with a completely new build that I came up with myself and seeing whether I can actually make it work. It's incredibly satisfying when some crazy idea ends up being a genuinely effective build. It's no coincidence that I have over 300 hours in this game. For roughly two thirds of the game, Underrail is damn near perfect. It would unquestionably be a 10/10 game if it weren't for one gigantic problem: the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Deep Caverns. This area is one of the most tedious and frustrating things I have ever experienced in a game. Infinite enemy respawns, ridiculous amounts of backtracking, and an endless series of tedious tasks, all just to eventually open the door to the final boss. The Deep Caverns are absolutely miserable. I'm not exaggerating. I only managed to finish that section because I found a guide online. Without it, I would have abandoned the game. And honestly, anyone who tells me they went through the Deep Caverns without using a guide is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ liar. I finished that cursed area exactly once. I killed Tchort exactly once. And I will never, ever willingly go through the Deep Caverns again. That section came dangerously close to making me abandon what is otherwise a masterpiece of an RPG. And yet, I still have plenty of Underrail left to play. The game has two excellent DLCs that I haven't fully explored, so I still have many more hours ahead of me with this fantastic RPG that comes incredibly close to perfection. Underrail 2 is currently in development, and from everything I've seen so far, it looks incredible. If it doesn't have another ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Deep Caverns, it might just become the greatest RPG of all time. Score: 9.5/10
This game definetly isn't for everyone, but if it is, you will absolutely love it. Punishingly hard if yopu don't take the time to learn the games mechanics, and the open ended world lets so many different types of character builds to be viable. I have played and replayed this game at least a dozen times and I still look forward to my next playthrough. HUGE warning for new players: SAVE OFTEN! You can soft-lock yourself in this game very very easily if you do not save often.
