Creeper World 3 is what happens when cellular automata takes over a strategy simulation. Instead of discrete units that attack your base, a fluid-like substance spreads over the terraformable terrain. Your base, your weapons, your strategy... you must adapt them all.
🧐 My Opinion 🧐
Creeper World 3 is a good and quite original strategy game built around one strong idea: instead of fighting classic enemy units, you fight against a spreading liquid enemy that slowly floods the map. And this idea works well. The best part of the game is the beginning of each mission. You have to expand your energy network, decide where to build, where to defend, how fast you can grow, and how much firepower you need before the Creeper overwhelms you. These first minutes can be really satisfying, especially on maps where the initial pressure is high and every early decision matters. Once you reach the point where your defenses can contain the Creeper, however, the game becomes much more predictable. At that stage, the mission is usually already won, and what remains is mostly a long cleanup phase: push the front, destroy the objectives, repeat. It is still pleasant enough, but the strategic tension is mostly gone. The campaign is enjoyable, with a few scripted surprises here and there, but overall the game is quite low on unexpected things. The Creeper is almost everywhere and behaves mostly the same way, so many maps end up feeling structurally similar despite different layouts. The unit roster is also more limited in practice than it first appears. In most missions, I did about 95% of the job with cannons and mortars. Some other units are useful in specific situations, especially when there are inaccessible areas, but they rarely change the core strategy in a meaningful way. There is a leaderboard system for players who want to finish maps as fast as possible, but this did not appeal much to me. Once I reach a stable defensive position, I prefer to take my time rather than micromanage everything to shave seconds off my completion time. Also, seeing top scores where maps are supposedly beaten in a few seconds does not exactly make the leaderboard feel very meaningful. But this shows that the main challenge of this game is to expand your economy and military power as fast as possible, rather than adapt your strategy to varied situations. Also, I wish the game had an automatic construction priority system. When there is not enough energy to supply every building at once, it would make sense to finish the first planned constructions before spreading energy thinly across all of them. As it is, you often have to wait for your first buildings to finish before planning new ones, and that waiting does not feel meaningful. That said, despite these issues, I still had a good time with the game. The core loop is satisfying, the concept is strong, and the campaign offers a decent amount of content. It is not a deeply varied tactical game, and it becomes somewhat repetitive once you understand its systems, but it remains a very enjoyable strategy experience. So I recommend Creeper World 3, especially if you like strategy games focused on expansion, production management, and gradually pushing back an overwhelming enemy. It took me a bit less than 17 hours to complete the campaign, and I spent a couple of hours on a couple of challenging additional maps.
💖 Pros 💖
- Fighting a spreading liquid enemy is a very original core concept - Strong early-game tension on many maps - Simple but effective production and energy management - Pleasant “push back the flood” feeling - A lot of maps if you can't enough of the game
💀 Cons 💀
- Once your defenses are stable, the mission is usually already won, and the cleanup can be quite long and even repetitive - A lot of unnecessary waiting - Not much strategic variety after you understand the core loop as the Creeper behaves too uniformly to create truly different tactical situations - Story and story telling are very meh, but for a low-budget Indie game, that's understandable
This is one of my favorite games to play when I'm not feeling well. It's like chicken noodle soup, but the soup is the creep, and it's bad for you.
This game is great! The strategy is more focused on the beginning of the game, setting up a strong enough defense for your base to block the enemy's advance. After that, it's somewhat repetitive, but in a cool way. The problem is that it has some negative points that I'd like to mention: - Several maps are unplayable. They're impossible! I wonder why someone would create maps like that. Is it to show how incompetent you are? - Some (actually several) maps are extremely large and time-consuming. It's fun to play, but they could be balanced by placing more energy sources in strategic locations. Each of these maps basically takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to finish. That's a lot of time! - ALL the map records have been hacked. It's frustrating to take an hour to finish a map and see that someone else has already done it in 30 seconds. I hate cheaters! Really! It was fun to play these 300+ hours, but I would have played much longer if it weren't so frustrating. The main campaign is very good. I recommend it, but if you want to delve deep and try to really beat the game, you will suffer just like me.
creeper world 3 is arguably the best game of the series. it changed perspective back to bird's eye view and as you play new, surprising and interesting aspects are added into the game. quite impressive. it may look simple and chill but it's not that easy after all. playing tired late at night will easily leave you annoyed and raging. ask me how i know! terraforming added a whole new dimension to the game and there are lots of new enemies, units and gameplay elements to learn. every mission offers a new and interesting challenge and i had a real blast playing another creeper world game. there are always news tricks to learn and new tactics to explore and some levels are even turned into tower defense maps or actual puzzles. amazing game and incredibly addictive! finishing the main story took 16 hours and i spent "a few" hours playing extra missions. like a lot. a total of 140 hours were needed to get 100% achievements unlocked since there is actually some grinding involved but it was still fun and entertaining. also i didn't rush anything as usual. you could easily spend 300 or maybe even 500 hours to beat all the levels included in the game. also the map editor and the community maps offer a basically endless supply of fresh maps if you're still hungry for more. at some point i wasn't and moved on but i had a really good time regardless. if you are new here i recommend starting with the very first creeper world game to learn about the concept and basics of the game but it's not strictly necessary. anyway this is hands down a 10/10 game! forward to my review of Creeper World 4: https://steamcommunity.com/id/Meister_Leuchte/recommended/848480 back to my review of Creeper World 2: Anniversary Edition: https://steamcommunity.com/id/Meister_Leuchte/recommended/422920
This is an absolutely amazing game. I love everything about it. The real fun for me was in the community maps. Especially the "PAC" and "CSM" maps. Those were so much fun. Sadly I've played the game out so much and there aren't anymore community maps to play. I loved the game and I can't wait for the latest release and all the map makers to get involved.
童年回忆!不管什么时候玩都觉得好玩
Close to perfection, this is the tower defense masterpiece. Completionist beware some levels are literally impossible to beat.
It was very fun and relaxing game until it broke 6 years ago and not longer run okey on Linux. I love the systems and flexibility how to tackle campaign missions, but They broke it at some point and it's not longer starting.
Loved these games since I was a child. 10 years later, I still come back to it occasionally! One of the best tower defense games ever with a unique premise. The story missions are incredible and carefully hand-crafted, and beyond them there's player-made missions and also a lot more levels in Tormented Space and Prospector Region.
Peak Game. You gotta play it at least once. Then listen to the OST a few times. It all about the Mortars Baby
