The first game in the Utawarerumono trilogy of story-rich tactics RPGs. Into a world filled with verdant nature, populated by folk with fluffy ears and fuzzy tails, awakens Hakuowlo, a man of masked mien and missing memory.

witness the slow descent of madness as a harem of lusty demonic furries start to assemble around the innocent and pure spirited main character, Hakuowlo. Due to no fault of his own he begins to fall prey to their seductions and evil trickery, desperately denying he has a thing for twin furry shotas. We; the readers have to watch helplessly as he gets overpowered in bed again and again by strong well toned muscled furry MILFs every night. Nothing is sacred and these harlots will ceaselessly work to drain him of his sanity, his willpower and his fluids. They will sweetly call him 'daddy, uncle and husband' but its all hollow gestures knowing the true brutality that lay behind their dull lifeless eyes. Theres also JRPG elements and NTR, good game 10/10.

I bought the trilogy because it's so highly rated here, but now I'm thinking that these fans might be lolicons or whatever the pedo anime people are called these days. Why? Well I'm only an hour into the game but I'm starting to get VERY disturbed by the character's actions. Our character is a man, who wakes up being taken care of by some little girls. They have tails and animal ears. He decides to grab the youngest one's tail(who I imagine is supposed to be around 8-10 years old) and she scratches him. He learns that's inappropriate. (Really bro? You just help yourself to children's bodies?) Then like 2 days later he decides it'd be a good idea to sneak up on her while she's sleeping and pat her head. He likes it so much he starts running his fingers through her hair? The little girl you've just met days ago and have already sexually assaulted? Yeah that's normal and fine.... Yeah...Whoever is writing this sounds like a pedo predator. If you're hearing this story and this sounds okay to you, you should probably get help before you find yourself in a bad situation. I'm so grossed out. Refunding everything I can.

Recomendo
I tried Utawarerumono after hearing the worldbuilding comparisons with the Trails series; I was pleasantly surprised by the overall experience and definitely recommend it for visual novel fans. You experience an underdog's rise to power amidst the struggle of neverending ongoing warring states during what is vaguely feudal Japan. The main loop consists of battles (whose gameplay is very basic and occupies a lot of time, but helps get you in the right mindset), recruiting new characters, and slice of life scenes that develop backstory and characters (they provide moments of levity, but the story's tone tends to be somber). Character motivations are clearly laid out and the main plot beats are interesting and ramp up significantly towards the end. There are lingering questions but I understand they will be explored in the next 2 entries. I am excited to see where the story goes next!
Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen is a captivating blend of visual novel storytelling and tactical role-playing combat that serves as the starting point of the acclaimed Utawarerumono saga. Developed by AQUAPLUS and published by DMM GAMES and Shiravune, the game revisits the origins of a beloved franchise with updated visuals, modernized gameplay systems, and a deeply emotional narrative. Rather than relying solely on action or strategic battles, the experience places a heavy emphasis on character development and world-building, creating a journey that feels both personal and epic in scope. The story begins with a mysterious man who awakens in an unfamiliar wilderness with no memory of his past and a mask that cannot be removed from his face. Taken in by the compassionate villagers Eruruu and Aruruu, he adopts the name Hakuowlo and slowly becomes part of their community. What initially appears to be a simple tale of rural life gradually evolves into a complex narrative involving political unrest, military conflict, cultural traditions, and the burden of leadership. The game carefully builds its world through extensive dialogue and interactions, allowing players to become immersed in the customs, relationships, and struggles of its inhabitants before larger events reshape the fate of entire nations. One of the game's most impressive achievements is its cast of characters. Every major figure feels important to the unfolding story, with personalities that extend beyond common archetypes. The relationships between characters develop naturally through a mixture of heartfelt conversations, comedic moments, and emotional conflicts. These interactions make the world feel alive and ensure that the dramatic events later in the story carry genuine weight. The narrative succeeds because it encourages players to become attached to the people involved rather than focusing exclusively on grand battles or shocking revelations. Gameplay is divided between lengthy story sequences and turn-based tactical combat encounters. Battles take place on grid-based maps where positioning, unit abilities, and terrain awareness play important roles. While the strategic systems are approachable enough for newcomers, they still provide enough depth to keep battles engaging throughout the campaign. Different characters fill specialized roles on the battlefield, encouraging players to experiment with various party combinations and tactics. Combat is further enhanced by timing-based attack mechanics that reward well-executed inputs, adding a layer of interaction beyond simple menu selections. The progression system supports both the narrative and gameplay elements effectively. Characters become stronger over time, gaining new skills and combat techniques that expand strategic possibilities. Optional battles provide opportunities for training and experimentation, allowing players to strengthen their party before major story confrontations. Although combat is not as mechanically dense as some strategy-focused RPGs, it remains satisfying because it complements the story rather than competing with it for attention. Visually, the game delivers an attractive presentation that combines detailed character artwork with polished battle animations. The character portraits are expressive and help convey emotion during the extensive dialogue scenes, while the environments establish a memorable fantasy setting inspired by nature, folklore, and traditional cultures. The visual style prioritizes atmosphere and personality over graphical realism, which helps the game maintain a distinctive identity even years after its original release. The soundtrack and voice acting significantly enhance the overall experience. The music shifts seamlessly between peaceful melodies, emotional themes, and dramatic battle tracks, reinforcing the mood of each scene. Japanese voice performances bring authenticity and depth to the characters, helping players connect with the story's emotional highs and lows. Together, the audio and visual presentation create a strong sense of immersion that supports the game's narrative ambitions. The primary drawback is that the game's pacing may not appeal to everyone. A substantial portion of the experience is dedicated to reading dialogue and watching story events, with battles appearing intermittently between narrative segments. Players looking for constant tactical gameplay may find the balance heavily tilted toward storytelling. However, those who appreciate visual novels or character-driven RPGs will likely view this as one of the game's greatest strengths rather than a weakness. Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen stands as an exceptional introduction to a highly respected trilogy. Its combination of memorable characters, rich world-building, emotional storytelling, and enjoyable tactical combat creates an experience that remains engaging from beginning to end. By successfully balancing intimate personal moments with large-scale political drama, it delivers a fantasy adventure that feels meaningful and rewarding. For fans of narrative-focused role-playing games, it is an easy recommendation and an excellent gateway into one of the genre's most beloved story-driven series. Rating: 9/10
