I am giving this game a borderline recommendation. Evil Within - ironically - struggles with it's own identity. Sections of this game are a real slog to get through. There are several, uninteresting locations to get through before you get to the parts of this game that really hit. There are a lot of grey and brown locals that are super drab to look at, and the inconsistent mental world is well done, but gives the game a very lose sense of continuity. It very much feels like you're just moving forward to make progress, at least until the game starts explaining things. They're also throwing a lot at the wall here. Stealth mechanics, saw traps, rail shooting sections, big monster fights, small monster fights, and some very light puzzle mechanics. Some sections of this game feel like Resident Evil 5, others feel like a mid 2010s Silent Hill game. Boss fights you RUN from are always more fun to deal with than the ones you have to shoot. But a lot of the things they throw at the wall work, especially in the back 1/3 of the game. You hit a point where the large, open air shooting galleries turn into malicious jigsaw trap mazes and pulpy camp horror monologuing. These segments There are better horror games and better action games you can play, but this is an easy game to get on sale to kill a couple of afternoons with.
I had fun playing this game!
The Evil Within excels in almost every aspect of the horror genre. Its story, atmosphere, and visual presentation are outstanding. The unique color palette and visual filters give the game a distinct identity and create an unforgettable experience for anyone who loves horror games. The story is engaging and exceptionally well told. On top of that, the DLCs answer many of the questions left by the main campaign. While the base game focuses on the protagonist, each DLC explores the stories of the supporting characters you encounter throughout the game, making the overall narrative feel complete. In several parts of the game, it's easy to see that the developers drew heavy inspiration from the Silent Hill series, especially Silent Hill 2. Instead of feeling like a copy, those influences helped create the unique atmosphere that allows The Evil Within to shine as one of the best modern horror experiences. The one thing I simply can't forgive the developers for is the Platinum Trophy—or, in Steam terms, earning every achievement. This is easily one of the hardest completion challenges I've ever finished. Akumu difficulty is absolutely insane. It feels almost unfair at times and should probably be illegal to put in a video game (figuratively speaking). Overall, The Evil Within is an incredible horror game that I highly recommend. And if you're planning to buy it, do yourself a favor and get all of the DLCs as well. They complete the story and make the experience far more satisfying. 10/10 – A must-play for every horror fan.
Despite its flaws, I found The Evil Within to be a lot of fun, and am currently working through the Assignment and Consequence DLCs. TEW feels like a love letter to both survival horror games and horror films, which results in some genuinely interesting story and gameplay ideas mixed with some genuinely baffling choices (such as the letterboxed gameplay screen which you do have the ability to turn off, thankfully. It's important to note that the game on its base difficulty is hard, and expects to handle enemy encounters strategically in order to survive. However, in pursuit of this difficulty and strategy, the game (especially the farther in you get) places you in almost arena-like areas full of enemies to defeat, losing some of its fear factor in exchange for action. And while I did enjoy the gameplay of that action, it's important to note that this isn't exactly a pure and harrowing horror experience. I also do have to talk about the boss and enemy designs. These things look, sound, and feel AWESOME in the worst possible ways, from the Keeper emerging from its safe right behind you as you open a door to Laura's spindly limbs scuttling toward you to the slithery grossness that is Quell (and that's to say nothing of the horrifying addition made in the Assignment), this game's enemies and bosses are just so stinking cool and I love them so much. Good game overall, won't make you soil your pants, but is a blast to play if you like a challenge.
one of those gems, see how good we had it back then, before the deluge of uninspired survival horror titles? true, it has moments that are just awful and it pains the more because all of it could be fixed with simply allowing to skip all the cutscenes. just stay clear of the DLCs, stick to the survial difficulty level, enjoy.
