The combat revolves around the Soul Gauge, a resource management system where you trade initiative for power. Instead of mana, you use Break Souls to extend combos indefinitely. It is less about menus and more about finding a rhythm, treating encounters like a fighting game where you stunlock enemies into oblivion. The Context This page is for the 2017 release. It is a fantastic game, but Bandai Namco has stopped discounting it to funnel you toward the Tales of Berseria Remastered launching in Feb 2026. The Remaster adds "Encounter Toggles" (to skip trash mobs) and movement speed boosts—features this game desperately needs to fix its pacing issues. Buying this version right now is like buying a PS4 the week before the PS5 launch at full price. The Friction The level design is stuck in the PS3 era; you will spend forty hours running down flat, uninspired corridors. The Remaster's "Quality of Life" features are specifically designed to mitigate this slog. Without them, you are signing up for a lot of unnecessary backtracking. The Bottom Line An S-Tier story trapped in a C-Tier product page. Do not click "Add to Cart" here; wait for the Remaster in February.

Did I save your wallet? Ugh. Here we go again. I'm just going to say the same thing I said with Koei's Atelier Ryza and Sega's Yakuza 0 releasing on Steam. As you've all maybe heard or seen the news about a Remaster coming soon. It is just a straight upgrade on top of 10 USD shaved off the 50 USD based price of this game. This will likely be delisted and won't have an upgrade option. Don't buy this and just wait for the Remaster version. You're and Bandai just fkin you over by buying this now. Or don't because it potentially be censored and/or have worse performance. I should be reviewing the game itself, but I could do that with the Remaster. Remasters isn't inherently bad. It is just how they do it and to the consumers is. And I'm just very strongly against anti-consumer practice. If Koei doesn't offer a free Remaster copy to all users who own the OG version or offer an upgrade option, then well not much can be done beside leaving negative reviews.
This is the best JRPG I have played and has one of if not the best stories in a videogame. It's theme of self discovery, tackling the idea of the greater good and staying true to yourself and living by your own means have become valuable life lessons to me as of finishing this game. I haven't seen a videogame go against the cliche standard template of story beats, and also manage to pull it off so well, I could never anticipate what would happen next and was always on the edge of my seat. Start to finish it's a grand journey of joy and sorrow alongside a bunch of memorable, complex but loveable crewmates I won't be forgetting. You owe it to yourself to play this game. From a pure gameplay perspective it's pretty lengthy with a lot to offer, a vast expansive combat system with a lot of intricacies that I'm still trying to figure out after finishing my first playthrough. Fantastic soundtrack and amazing visual presentation. Without a doubt one of my favorite games ever. I'll always remember this adventure.
I wanted to like this so bad but I can't bring myself to. The party in this game is absolutely stellar, from the characters to the interactions to the voice acting, these goobers rule and I love them. But the game is so bad. Combat wants you to think it's some action game that drowns in it's own depth, meanwhile I'm over here mashing a single weakness chain with the occasional Break Soul use every fight. Exploration is useless, since both the world and the dungeons are so bland they might as well be made of stock assets and the only thing you find are more bad fights. The equipment system introduces the art of bombarding you with absolute trash loot you dismantle and reforge for next to no benefit aside from ♥♥♥♥♥♥ random skills. I wish these characters were in a better game.
Seems to work perfectly on the Steam Deck in case y'all are wondering!!!!
Ever wanted to be an edgelord demon anime girl with trauma fighting against a corrupt theocracy this game is for you.
I think I am bit old for the writing of this game, plus I hated the combat.
this version has denuvo, meaning that when their servers shut down, you wont ever be able to play your legally obtained copy just get the new 2026 remastered version instead, that one does not have denuvo afaik
