Steer clear, even on sale. I bought this in a sale a while back, i read the synopsis and thought it would be a fun detective game - which i love - or at least a nice point and click game... Well I was doubly wrong. As the title itself says, This has 2 games in one, two episodes of a saga that I'm quite sure wont ever be finished. The first episode was okay, and the second was just a complete mess. You follow red around on metropolis, solving a murder and a kidnapping, with lots of puzzles and riddles. Here's the thing. I love puzzles. I love detective games. I love story rich adventures. I love point and click games. Somehow this title FAILED in all four departments. The gameplay is Painfully broken. You're supposed to drag your mouse around in lots of cases, and pray it works, which is hardly ever does at first time. The puzzles are ridiculously farfetched sometimes, and you have to figure it out by guessing what you're supposed to do, seeing theres no instructions for 90% of them. The plot flutuates around with on the nose jokes, dirty references and terrible voice acting. I dont really like walkthroughs, it feels like cheating, but I had to use one - in french, because apparentely no one did one in english - just to try and finish this and unninstal it forever. Buy any other detective game, like LA noire, Adam wolfe, Renoir, whatever, just not this one.
Buy at a Discount. The game isn't bad. The bad part about this game comes from the poor controls and bad puzzle design. The dialogue can be off and weird at times, but for the most part it is nice. The controls during certain puzzles are horrendous and not to mention the QTEs. Some of the puzzles give you little to no information about how to deal with them, yet expect you to do them quickly. It's a pretty fun/long game and would be worth it if you could get it close to $4.99, but I couldn't recommend it for any more than that.
Genre
Ein Detective Noir First Person Point & Click Adventure
Story
Das Spiel erinnert vom Stil her sehr an Telltale Spiele.
Wer gerne Point & Click bzw.

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group
Oy. Playing this was frustrating. There are a lot of puzzles which, even using the hint system and looking up a solution... I don't get the logic. The controls are frustrating on keyboard and mouse, as you get to try and click/drag to gesture in directions to make things happen... and the detection for what you are doing is spotty. It only does cardinal directions and there's no control customization. It's point & click & pray. The first game has a better mystery, although a bit QTE heavy. It's a bit weird to have a lot of the CSI elements handwaved away by a magic computer analyzer, but then have the "whodunnit" boil down to filling out the paperwork in detail in the form of multiple choice quizzes. And recreating awful sketches of individuals... without hints. Even referencing a picture on a wakthrough, I botched 1. That's... not good. And it ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, of course. And the studio is utterly defunct. I've had better times with hidden-object games. It's currently on sale for $2. If you're hard up for a night or two of frustrating control and math-heavy moon logic... I would not recommend paying more than that.
Red Johnson's Chronicles: A budget detective adventure game with mostly mixed reviews, and for good reason, as it mostly leaves me with mixed feelings. This is a 2-in-1 pack of detective games, and contains a launcher for two totally separate episodes. Set in a rundown, crime-ridden big city, our protagonist is a skilled but insufferably cocky private eye who frequently solves crimes for the local cops. In the first episode, he is contracted by a bumbling patrolman to solve a random murder that may be connected to the recent prison escape of a notorious thief. In the second episode, a criminal mastermind puts a bounty on Red's head as he searches for his missing brother. Each episode takes roughly 4-5 hours to complete. Tonally, the game is very comic-book-noire; it's a serious mystery but filled with wacky offbeat characters that prevent it from being too serious. As I am writing this, Red Johnson came out almost seven years ago and has fewer than 20 reviews on Steam. I liked the look of it, though, so I gambled and picked it up on deep discount at 99 cents. I definitely feel like I got my money's worth, but I also feel like there are plenty of better mysteries and adventures that you could be spending your time with; while there are definitely positives with this game, they are ultimately outweighed by the negatives. Here are the positives: Aesthetically, Red Johnson is pretty good! The visuals in Red Johnson are quite nice, from its filthy streets to its cluttered indoor environments. I have no complaints about the environments, character models, or animations. The game's voice actors also cast well and do a fine job in carrying the story. Red Johnson also goes out of its way to really add variety to the gameplay. Puzzles are varied and include inventory puzzles, finding hidden collectibles, examining and comparing evidence, mechanical puzzles, dialog puzzles, even making police sketches based on descriptions. The stories are solidly decent - not spectacular, but also not at all bad, and they were enjoyable enough to keep me playing. It is not where the main problems with this game lie, and if you like a good mystery story, you might still enjoy the game IF you have the patience to deal with some super frustrating mechanics. There are two major negatives in my view which prevent me from recommending the game. First is the uneven game design combined with how the game treats failure. Puzzle difficulty is all over the map and ranges from trivial to impossible; sometimes objectives are extremely unclear. There is a hint system, but it's irritating, patronizing, and also costs in-game currency to use. Furthermore, there's QTEs all over the place. Dialogue puzzles sometimes require you to make wild guesses or to remember very specific details. With each puzzle, QTE, or conversation, you are always given a grade afterwards, based on time taken, hints used, and number of mistakes and if you're me, that grade is frequently not great. It autosaves over itself like crazy, too, so no save scumming allowed. The whole thing adds this crazy level of stress to what should be a nice casual experience, and punishes you for failure or even just taking a few seconds too long. The other major problem is the game's control scheme. Other reviewers mention it, but it truly is bonkers. It's not remappable, and consists of mouse+spacebar and the V, B, and N keys. And the mouse is not just click-based, there's tons of things where you need to click and also do gestures like sliding or rotating or rapidly shaking. The sensitivity for the mouse is also extremely problematic, and while lowering my mouse DPI helped a lot, it would still misregister gestures during QTEs a lot (causing failure) or make me spin my mouse in little circles for 45 seconds like a madman to lower a windowshade pixel by pixel or some such puzzle nonsense. All in all, Red Johnson is okay, but will require dealing with some pretty serious frustrations to get real enjoyment out of it. For adventure games with a similar vibe, I would instead recommend Chicken Police or Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller.
First of all, for windows 10 players who have problems with the game's resolution, just locate the game's exe file in the steamapps folder and tweak the compatibility setting. The system will first try to run it under win8. If the game still won't show up properly, just say so and the system will change the DPI setting automatically. That's what works for me. The art and style is totally my cup of tea. Story's great. You meet some very colorful characters. VO's good. You get the feeling you are actually investigating a case. The puzzles need multi-steps to solve, which will make you feel smart :) You can fail a puzzle too, i.e. you can accidentally erase a tape instead of ejecting it. But you get to decide when to save the game so that's some solace for the OCD in me. All in all, a very very solid entry in the point and click puzzle adventure genre for me.
I'm glad I played Red Johnson's Chronicles--and judging from the other reviews and the discussion comments, I'm lucky I was able to finish it. In the QTEs I had the most luck making quick, short mouse movements (Windows 7 64-bit, mouse USB plug-and-play with no special drivers or settings). The QTE at Sonia's took me four tries. I liked that many puzzles often meant manipulating things in 3D (or close-up, or with the UV light) and then figuring out the logic. But the puzzles were uneven in quality, with some being more contrived and unsatisfying to solve, especially in combination with the bad mouse controls. And I hated the multiple "sketch the face" puzzles, considering that many of the character models were unattractive and therefore their facial details were hard for me to remember. One Against All would have worked better as the third story of a trilogy, with another regular detective case to solve in between, perhaps with mention of Red's brothers to establish them. As it stands, it feels too abrupt to go from the first story to One Against All--I didn't feel like I'd accomplished enough with Red for him to deserve being hunted, and I didn't feel much connection to his brothers. And that's a shame, because I really appreciated the city's retro-future noir look and feel; I would have liked another case to solve in between to further flesh out Metropolis. So this is a negative positive review: I enjoyed the world, the concepts, and some of the puzzles--but getting through these two adventures involves a lot of patience and a good deal of frustration.
I hate your f*cking QTE🤬
I got this game free in a giveaway, decided to give it a try since as an Achievement Hunter I figured only having 12 should make it quick and easy. Quickly discovered after a bit of research that this game is a console port which explains why some of the Quick Time Events (QTE) are so finicky. As another reviewer already stated, sometimes you only have to move your mouse a little bit and other times I had to use my entire mouse pad for it to register. What made matters worse is that by having a dual monitor setup I would consistently have to move the mouse too much to the point where I would select my other monitor causing the game to minimize and me to fail the QTE. This wouldn't be so bad if you could use a separate input like an Xbox Controller which I've used for other Steam games. However, despite this being a console port it doesn't have the option of using either a KB&M or controller.
