Alright. Devil's Hideout is done and dusted. This is the third Cosmic Void game I've played, and what I've come to realize is that dude is really good at writing short stories along with enough lore/world building regarding said short stories to really give these games a surprising amount of depth despite their short run times. With that in mind, this was a fun PnC adventure that weighed in at a bit less than two hours. Although looking at the cheevos, it does appear you would want to play this twice in order to see both endings, which would elevate that playtime a bit if you were so inclined. In this story, you play as Lauren, who is trying to find her sister Beth who presumably died in a car crash while the two were driving through the area represented in this story. Lauren and her friend visit a medium who informs them that Beth is not in fact dead and is trapped somewhere between life and death. And so Lauren embarks on a quest to find and rescue her lost sister. Unfortunately, the town they're in has been afflicted with a bit of that Silent Hill syndrome, and so not only is everything not as it seems, but it's also clear that a pervasive evil is attempting to shape the events that unfold in its favor while you are obviously trying to counter that in order to save your sister. With that in mind, this is definitely a game that honors classic PnCs, up to and including some of the puzzle logic. Although actually, the items do make a certain amount of sense. But their locations might not. Ultimately though, if you stick with the time-honored tradition of trying to match items to everything clickable, no puzzle solution will be out of reach. There are a couple that require you to actually pay attention to the clues provided, but that's not really a big deal. Just pay attention as things are revealed and those puzzles will make sense even if maybe you need to trial and error for a moment before the realization of what you're supposed to do sets in. I enjoy the way Cosmic Void provides a map with unlocked locations that you can fast travel back and forth between. In this game, there aren't really a lot of locations, thus better localizing the experience as you try to sus out puzzles and find necessary objects. The graphics are a straight throwback to PnC games of old, but with better definition. I enjoyed the attention to detail paid to this aspect of the game. The OST is pretty consistently mysterious and creepy. The voice acting was surprisingly good. There is one moment where someone dies and the nonchalance of the voice acting then is kind of comical, but that aside, it's nicely done. What this game really brings to the table though is ambiance. It's a horror-centric PnC, and so the imagery is all about driving that home. I don't really see it as too disturbing, but some people might. There's definitely plenty of death and creepiness in general, including the appearance of
IT
as one of the quest givers, lol. He goes by a different name of course. There are a handful of jump scares, but the first one kinda made me chuckle and the remaining ones after that became more atmospheric than scary. Because of my attempting to match/combine items with pretty much everything, I did somehow stumble into the good ending, which I think is considered the secret ending based on its cheevo name. And I'm not saddened by this, lol. Yeah, I thought this was a nice, short, and creepy horror point and click game with a fun story premise and decent gameplay. I didn't find it particularly challenging, but then again, I also wasn't really looking for it to be more than it was. Which in my estimation, it was exactly the game it needed to be. $9.99 is probably a bit optimistic as far as pricing goes, but had on sale, this is well worth a look if you enjoy point and click adventures and/or horror. One quick final note: Steam's screenshot function is unavailable for this game. At least via desktop play. Perhaps it's different on the Steam Deck? There is ALOT to love here. Voice acting and art style is top notch for example, clearly made with love and care. However it's one of those games I'd wish for a mid score for. Mainly because, for one, it feels like a part 2 or 3 in an ongoing story. It suddenly starts, without really introducing us to its world or the characters, and then also kinda abruptly ends, even though yes, it ends with the objective of the protaganist completed. The start of the game is far more jarring to me though I've read some reviews mostly complaining about the ending, which is alot better than the start imho. And then there's the game logic when it comes to puzzles and progression. Though not nearly as obscure as the moon logic of some of the classic Sierra point and clicks, I gave up and had to look at help, even as the world is relatively small and the interactions limited. It could just be me, but some things I felt were poorly explained for the player to actually be able to figure it out on their own. Again, might be me, and also since you have a limited number of interactive hot spots and inventory objects, you might as well try everything on everything in order to progress, but there is a certain satisfaction in making it through a game with (in game) logical solutions. A great plus and a shout out to the dev for being involved in the community and answering questions and such on forums! I'd say go for this if point and clicks are your thing, it's bite sized so not a huge time investment, but it might leave you a bit confused or unsatisfied despite lovingly crafted.
A nice point and click game with both mystery and horror elements to it. Some of the puzzles can be confusing and if you mess up by clicking on something in the wrong order or miss it, it can have an effect on future puzzles. There is also multiple endings. The artwork is beautiful and I love the voice acting.
Another great point and click adventure game from Cosmic Void. I think I got all of the Steam achievements but sadly no way to check that as they are still not working despite that I had a lot of fun and except for towards the end when I got to the locked box I didn't use a walk-through. The problem with those is when you crack it open you can't stop looking lol in retrospect once I saw how to solve the locked box I felt really stupid lol
Gra trudna do oceny i jeszcze trudniejsza do polecenia. Dwa poprzednie ogrywane przeze mnie tytuły od autora Devil’s Hideout mnie urzekły swoją oprawą, intrygującą fabułą i nieco draczną, acz oryginalną atmosferą.
It's ok. The art is nice and the voice acting is pretty good. I'm not a fan of the writing though and it uses a ton of moon-logic. Achievements don't work at all (played on Steam Deck).
Cosmic Void did it again, making another adventure game that grips at you. Devil's Hideout has you playing as a woman seeking her sister, but there's way more to it than just that. The game takes you all over a (mostly) deserted town in search of your kin with only a couple people to keep you company (including a creepy clown, but I won't spoil that fun). As the story unfolds, you uncover a secret cult and their plans for...well, you'd have to play the game to found out what. Any adventure game fan that enjoys a good supernatural horror mystery should find something to enjoy here. I certainly wasn't disappointed.
Was this written by a twelve years old?
Quite short game.. some puzzles don't seem to make sense, but since there's only one puzzle going on at a time, it's not a big deal. The items you get from various places don't make any sense either. But I guess they don't have to. Plus points for having voice acting.
