Red Johnson was a drab experience in almost every way. While the esthetics were pleasant, the tone of the game was very inconsistent - it ranged from somewhat humorous and lighthearted to very serious, full of curse words and thriller-like narrative. It was difficult to adjust to when it so abruptly changed halfway through the game. The puzzles had a lot of potential, and some of them very actually interesting and logical, but a huge chunk were overly difficult and took half an hour per puzzle to complete, made little sense, were broken, or my favorite - one puzzle had multiple solutions but only one was accepted by the game. It was obviously ported from a console version and the devs were either lazy or very time-constrained - they made players perform QTEs and various trivial actions in the PC version with mouse movement. Which would be fine if it worked, but the mouse actions here barely register - you move your mouse, nothing happens, or sometimes you need to move your mouse slightly, sometimes fully, and there's no way of telling which one you need. I cursed at this BS after I failed some miniscule QTE action for ten times in a row (restarting the sequence every time) because the game wouldn't recognize my mouse movement to the left. There are other flaws, e.g. UX issues, sometimes some video stuttering, clumsy UI, etc. All things considered this game has barely got anything going for it apart from the atmosphere. To add insult to injury, they never released the last chapter and left chapter two with a cliffhanger. Seeing how it's been years, I doubt they'll ever finish it. Wish I hadn't wasted 20+ hours of my gaming time on this...
3/10 God awful quick time events
I had to let the game running in the background to post the review... The only thing I see when I start the game is a black screen. I hear sounds but everything is black. Unplayable, 0/10.
Overall = 3/10
The game’s not without its charms and the mashup of ideas to make a traditional yet more involved point and click adventure game is a fascinating production, but it focuses on all the wrong things and is wrapped up in a poorly performing package. It’s very stylish with its grimy, industrial noir presentation and detailed character models, but the game is made and runs very badly. For the first 6 hours it ran horribly slow for no reason, there’s no graphics or control options, the controls are unresponsive and swap around for no reason, animations are very limited and wooden, background graphics are blurry or not present, the backward letters on the title make it hard to read and the instructions often have placeholder text in them. The investigations do have depth to them, but it is rather hit and miss due to the game focusing on the overly difficult puzzles rather than the actual investigation. The first case was nothing remarkable; traditional gumshoe fare, rather cliché and with mediocre voice acting and characters. The second case was lot more wacky, but also silly and due to lack of useful information, coming to the right conclusions at the end was nigh on impossible. Each “challenge” has a superfluous scoring system based on the time you take to complete them, but when combined with the unresponsive controls, instant fail quizzes and unhelpful hint system, they become more and more of a chore. The final indictment process ensures you are paying attention, but slows the pace right down when it should be coming to a crescendo and due to the obscurity of some of the clues, is not as satisfying as it should be.
Quindi, siete avvisati!
Tags: Adventure - WC - Walk Clicker Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Simple detective walk clicker. Hotspot oriented, almost like a tablet game. Hotspots often do not react to clicks, there are few pieces of fluff text. The engine is VERY sluggish. I did not get very far, seems like in theory this should obey some sort of streamlined casualized P&C formula, with a journal keeping tabs on some sort of intrigue or clue. The puzzles seemed mostly prescripted with the game going out of its way to refuse input on hotspots if they are clicked out of order or if a prior objective has not been completed. Conclusion: The walk clicker genre is already difficult to get into and casualizing it in any way was probably not half a bad idea, with transition animations, simpler UI, a tutorial and a simple and familiar premisce. However the game is darned near unplayable, along the lines of something like Captain Morgane's Turtle game the technical issues makes it difficult to assess the real entertainment value locked away behind the poor user experience. Not worth the effort to reward ratio for sure. Unlike Captain Morgane I probably would not even attempt to troubleshoot it or care if the developper fixed the issues. The genre itself is of limited interest and there are many better detective games to be had on Steam regardless. Removed permanently for declutter. https://store.steampowered.com/app/264320/Captain_Morgane_and_the_Golden_Turtle/
