oh boy... first up: half the basic settings are missing and the rest are broken. how? well there are no sound options. second the brightness option is fake. that's right it was so murky I had to crank my monitor. which hurt my eyes. no controller, my hands are cramping and my back hurts. now about the game.... what game? pixel hunt a key repeatedly ad infinium? the bad jumpscares you can see coming from a mile away? the jarring night and day transitions that waste resources as light switches and candles reset? story thin at best given the infuriating amount of time screwing around looking for keys. so bad I gotta delete it from my library. I wouldn't want a refund even if I still had time to refund it. that payment has been spiritually dirtied by having paid for this slop. if I ever wanted to play this again I would sooner cut the power to my house and fumble with my keys while burning my fingers with matches trying to see. save yourself the trouble and buy obscuritas from them instead. that one was at least some sort of fun until it botched the story and ending. but even with that: at least it was engaging even as it went completely off the rails. pineview is not.
I have conflicting feelings about this game. The atmosphere and environment are amazing, but the mechanics are problematic and the story is not well-explained. Pros: -The atmosphere: This is a classic spooky haunted house done in a way that just feels creepy. There aren't any physical threats like monsters chasing you around. Really the only danger to our character is fear itself. It just feels creepy, and that's a feeling that I think a lot of horror games absolutely miss on. -The scares: I think they're for the most part well done. Sure there are jumpscares that some people might consider cheap, but there are also some really well done subtle spooks that happen. Cons: -The exploration of the house: Most of the game involves walking around randomly to find a key, then walking around trying every door you can to find out what the key opens. It works okay early on, but as you open up more of the house, the area you end up wandering gets larger and larger. Eventually the game will give you a hint, but until then you just have to keep wandering. You basically need a walkthrough, not because the game is difficult, but because it would just be so tedious otherwise. It doesn;t help that sometimes events that give you a key occur in rooms you had unlocked several nights prior. The entire exploration could have been done so much better if there were some sort of guidance as to where we should be searching. Maybe we could catch a shadowy figure disappearing around corners, which we follow until it leads us to the next room we need to be in. Or maybe we could follow the sound of footsteps or singing. And there are times when the game does something like this with the telephones, but it's only one night out of 30. -The health meter: This is possibly the most painful one for me because it is such a cool concept but the execution is just bad. The game tracks your character and mouse movements when a scare happens, and you lose health based on how much the game determines you were scared by it. Cool concept, right? Well, the problem is ANY mouse movement or running during or immediately after a scare registers as you being scared, and thus you lose health for it. This happens whether you legitimately get startled and move the mouse erratically or if a scare happens while you are moving the mouse to look at something or to round a corner (which does happen). Or, if you are running down a hallway and a jumpscare happens, well you lose health for that too. For the entire final segment you have to walk slowly with your hand off the mouse as much as possible. When you are forced to cheese the game out of necessity, it's bad design. It also discourages you from exploring and taking in the environment because if you turn to examine a room and a scare happens, you lose health. It's also kind of weird that a horror game punishes you for getting scared. -The story: It's just very nebulous. The ending gets strange and explains nothing. The only reason I know what the story is supposed to be is because I read a youtube comment where someone had posted the story from a facebook comment that the dev posted years ago. I won't spoil it, but I will say I have no idea how anyone was supposed to figure out the plot based on the game alone. So in the end, this game had a really cool atmosphere and some mechanics with a lot of potential, but they suffer from poor execution. It's a shame that the scare mechanic didn't catch on and get improved upon with other games. If steam had an option where you could say you "maybe recommend" a game, I would give it that. It's good for a 2014 indie horror game, but in the year of our lord 2025, it's hard to strongly recommend.
TRISTE
