Original Gameplay & Story:
This game--me personally--is an amazing game in my opinion. The way that the story is written and that the game lets you connect the puzzle together with scrapbooks and exploration is absolutely amazing. Along with Mark J Hadley's great composition for the game which I think is one of the greatest video game soundtracks I've heard. It fits the game and its atmosphere so PERFECTLY; for example, the opening of the game when you are walking through the woods on the way to Kate's house while it rolls credits playing this very mysterious and maybe a little pessimistic music in the background. I also want to absolutely appreciate the sound design for this game. The new sound effects they came out with after the eight pages was significantly improved and very spooky; Kate's voice before and after she became proxy sounding very eerie and uncanny, Charlie's inhuman screeching, combining his old voice with a more sinister growling mixed together, Slender's jumpscare sound effects are all amazing and interesting. I could understand the criticism that the actual story you are meant to see is the one players are more likely to not pay attention to... I guess if you really need a fuller experience, I would definitely encourage exploration and curiosity. Another thing that may seem repetitive to others is that some of the chapters in this game is basically the same gameplay mechanic: find the eight pages, find the six generators, close all windows and doors. That's honestly why I'm grateful for the Homestead DLC chapter since it's more story-driven and focused on finding more clues regarding the game's lore.
The Remake:
At the time i was honestly quite surprised that this game got its remake for its 10th anniversary. Makes me happy in some way but also I believed that there could have been improvements to the original game that I THOUGHT would actually make the game better; like a difficulty selection when you click start game, just like halo! Another criticism I have with the remake is that it feels a little bit sloppier than the original game. Me personally, I'd always prefer style over realism. Yes, the graphics are absolutely astonishing, and for 10 GB is really surprising; usually game remakes are always AT LEAST 50 GB OR SOMETHING. But the problems I have with the game is that it misses the unique style the original game had, like the dynamic glitchy effects that I wish was in this remake, but was replaced with a little shaky camera effect when you look at Slendy, with not much going for its effects other than just a little bit of static. It doesn't feel as intense as the original game and makes it look a little stiff. Lastly, the game just seems really difficult to run for me, I really wish there was a FPS cap option. I can't afford to run at that high of framerate. Regardless of how I think about the remake, I think it definitely was definitely an opportunity to get more people to play the game, along with other youtubers that haven't seem to played the original game before. That was definitely nice to this game being brought back alive!
In Conclusion
If you're a little more open-minded with horror games and you don't mind exploration, this game is probably really good for you. Otherwise, you'll likely be bored or burnt out over it.
