«Phantasmata»
Phantasmata is an extremely interesting game filled with some of the best personality you can find in a game. This being said though I think that I was not particularly the target audience. There is no better way to start a review than with a pro/con list! Pros: - Interesting atmosphere - Hilarious "hand drawn" art - Interesting character combat dynamics - Comedy - Enemy design - CLASSIC Turn based combat Cons: - Directionless story - Sometimes music just sounds like horrifying background noise - Confusing ability/item descriptions - Obnoxiousness in dialogue This list is MY take on what I experienced in this game. I should also mention that this game is in early-access and that the cons on this list could be fixed later in development, they are simply turn offs to me when it comes to the game in it's current state. Now for kind of the bulk of the review. You are thrust into an exceedingly interesting side scrolling world that is full of wonderful colors, hilarious (yet obnoxious) characters, and memes. Seriously...this game FUELS itself on memes. You can tell right away that it's a labor of love and that you're delving into the mind of the creator. I said earlier that I don't think I'm quite the target audience for this game. At one point I found myself thinking and saying "this game is essentially Tumblr come to life". This isn't really my kind of style but definitely has an audience that would enjoy it! The characters in the game are some of the strangest things in this world. One character in particular goes from screaming things like "Eat my nuts" (or something like that) to a much more serious "We need to accomplish this task to progress" in their dialogue alone. That is confusing when it comes to the character development. At least that's what I was feeling. Even still...it made me giggle. The combat for all the characters is very interesting, but I will say there is a lot to be worked on when it comes to the list of abilities. For instance; several characters have something like 23 abilities that you can use in combat...but there is no flavor text or damage numbers, or damage types that it shows the player. Lor became one of my all time favorite characters to use because she has an ability that does 800-7000 damage. That's not an exaggeration. Sometimes on the same enemy she could deal anywhere in that mix. The combat turn order could also be rather confusing. And finally the combat log in the top left corner goes so fast when playing I had no idea who was attacking and for how much they were attacking for unless I was looking RIGHT at the log. All of this being said the game has a lot of charm and definitely has an interesting and wonderful world to delve in to, but simply just isn't for me. There are so many goofy moments, memes, and RPG tropes that get thrown out the window and it's refreshing to see a developer have so much fun while creating a game. And if you like perusing through the internet and giggling at the ridiculousness that it has to offer...I HIGHLY recommend this game. I will say as well, that a lot of these things I've listed could change, or they couldn't and it would still be on my recommendation. It's an experience unlike any I've had before.
Very unusual art style :) I found it hard to follow the story and objectives. The combat a little repetitive. Not my cup of tea
And the third entry in the Space Funeral series sports a lovely Vaporwave palette. OK, not really, but it might as well be. I could leave it right there, and it'd stand just fine as a recommendation or not, but I'll elaborate. This is one of those RPG Maker games that defies the usual, and flies in the face of all the half-assed creations that make most people wary about buying anything from the engine. It's still a little rough around the edges right now, but it's certainly playable, and I can't wait to see the finished product! It's easy to see how bright and colorful it is, but maybe not so easy to see how wild it gets. The tutorial alone exceeds the usual swear count, but everything in this world sucks, so people have just given up. Most everything that attacks you is bizarre and twisted. The story's a bit incoherent, too, at times, but that just adds to its surreal nature. Weapons are fun - you can get flamethrowers and RPGs, among other things - and you have a ridiculous cast of playable characters both in size and design; I liked the dad-joke-telling murder cyborg, the rollerderby girl, and the... whatever he is in the park. Right now, it its unfinished state, it's pretty short, but it's a great ride with quite a few laughs.
Phantasmata is a style saturated head trip of a working alpha game. There's lewdness, meme pandering, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DEMONS. The music bangs, the enemy designs are a special kind of ugly in the best way imaginable. Very eager to see the game's next update where abilities, combat and dialogue portraits are more fleshed out to more easily follow what's happening.
Let me preface this review by saying that I really enjoyed playing this game for a multitude of different reasons, and it was well worth the price to experience all of the things that this game had to offer, even in its early access not quite finished state. I'm gonna talk about all of the good things about this game before getting into the nitty gritty. Like most of the reviews would tell you, the atmosphere and tone of the game is really what sells it. It's not quite like any other piece of media out there and the combination of different art styles, charming writing, and surreal settings alone makes it worth picking up and playing for a while. There's a lot of different recruitable characters that you can find and get to join your team with a myriad of different skills and personalities, and beyond that there are mechanics that allow you to further power them up and tailor them to your liking. The music never misses and it's always very high energy, featuring a lot of really neat jungle/breakbeat/EDM inspired tracks. If you like weird rpgs with unique aesthetics and lots of weird little quirky things sprinkled in then you'll really enjoy what this game has to offer. Here is where I have to talk about all of the bad stuff though, unfortunately this game has a fair amount of it. I know that this game is still apparently in development and a lot of this could potentially change, but a lot of the issues I had seemed to be things that were fundamentally baked into the game, like the combat system or the way the game handles it's power scaling/difficulty. This game doesnt have any kind of a leveling system and the way you're supposed to get more powerful is by purchasing better gear or teaching your characters new moves. In my playthrough this basically made the beginning of the game a huge slog where i struggled to find enemies to farm money off of, and then the end of the game tedious and braindead as i autoattacked everything to death within one turn (i had each of my characters equipped with decent weapons and an accessory that allowed me to attack twice in a row) so I didnt really have a need to engage with any of the different skills or classes or any of the other cool mechanics they implemented. I suppose I could have gone out of my way to do so but that would have made the battles take EVEN LONGER and the game makes you get into a fight every few steps so by the end i was just powering through the fights to see how the story ended. Another thing that soured me a bit was just how long some of the maps were, a lot of the areas were pretty much just very long hallways filled with enemy encounters and junk to occasionally walk around, walking back and forth between different areas and exploring felt like a massive chore but I still did it anyway because I really enjoyed finding secret characters or funny npc dialogue, but it could have been much more enjoyable if the encounters werent so abundant, or if they were more fun, or if the maps didn't take so long to traverse. Another issue I had was with the power level of the enemies, the boss encounters didnt feel very different from the normal enemy encounters, all of the monsters in the game had somewhere from 25-100 health and every encounter was a huge challenge at first and then completed within one turn by the end, all of the big climactic story battles were finished before the enemy had a chance to attack which was a bit of a letdown, but this is nothing a bit of balancing and tweaking couldnt fix, which will probably happen once the game is completed. The last few issues I had were things that I'm sure are a result of the game not being completed, I got stuck in a few rooms because the exit didn't work, i got softlocked a few times because i entered a map that didn't allow me to move, one area that goes from being a dungeon full of enemies to a big shopping center would swap back and forth depending on what door you went in or out of. Characters I hadn't unlocked yet would talk in certain encounters even though they weren't in my party yet, and it crashed on me a few times. Just the normal kinds of quirks you would expect to find in an early access game, not experience ruining or anything, just save often! This is probably the longest review of a game I've ever written and I think it's because this game is really and honestly something special, I wanna see it get done and I wanna see it do well, and if the devs read this I want them to feel proud of everything they've done so far. I sunk a good amount of time into the game just because I enjoyed the characters and the world and I felt motivated to explore and to meet everyone I could and see everything I could see. If you're someone who really enjoys rpgs, especially weird little indie ones with lots of heart and soul, don't pass this up. All of the little quirks and issues are things that can be overcome with a bit of patience and polish and this little game has a lot to offer!!!!!!
TL;DR Some balancing and polishing issues which i am sure will be fixed prior to the games full release. But otherwise fun and enjoyable. I played this for a couple of hours on stream. I'm excited to see where this game goes as it comes out of Early Access. However, i made the following observations, which didn't affect my enjoyment of the game too much, but are defintely some things to take into consideration moving forward. The music, some was amazing. Others (like the "music" when you enter Studio 7, was just horrible off key noise that prompted a headache) Enemy balancing: I found myself either one shotting, or being one shot by the enemies. There really was no in between. Item Descriptions: It was often unclear exactly what an item does, or where i could obtain an item. For example, my cat was one shot by an enemy and i spent a good half hour or so wandering around trying to figure out what item would revive him and where i could buy it. At one stage the games sound completely dropped out, the game crashed shortly after. In saying that. I enjoyed the artwork and had a laugh over the dialog and some of the enemy names.
RPG Maker strikes again! Phantasmata is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. However, it's worth noting the assets have had some palette swaps and are accompanied by some absolutely crap attempt at "art" which makes me think several art galleries must have taken out restraining orders against the "developers" of this RPG Maker construction kit hack job, leading them to resort to paying $100 to dump RPG Maker garbage onto Steam. The artwork here is terrible, it's a blend of old retro pixel "art" used as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics, and some of the most amateurish MS-Paint/"Baby's First Wacom Tablet" style drawings I've ever hurt my eyes on. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can do graphics properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result of these decisions. The game was abandoned roughly 2 years after launch and hasn't been updated in almost 3 years. It blew past the developers commitment to complete the game without any notification or admission of failure from the developer. The game will never be completed. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. There's some theme about witches or something which slightly differentiates this abandoned RPG Maker template job from the usual anime fan-fictions, but not much, the plot is still very much what you would expect from RPG Maker fanfictions... high school anime club reject garbage. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Unethically, the developer sold keys to this abandoned Early Access game into cheap, nasty game bundles, where they knew it would be advertised and sold as a complete PC game. This seems to have been done in an attempt to mislead gamers into buying a knowingly faulty, defective and incomplete product. When a developer does this for a game they have zero practical intention of completing, this is essentially a scam, an intention to get paid for a broken/unfinished product. Often this is done as an exit strategy, as the developer takes the money and runs. No refunds have been given, the developer kept all the money they took from gamers. Another unethical act of this developer, knowing full well that this game is abandoned and they will never complete it, they are deliberately trying to scam gamers into buying it by offering it on discount from time to time. It's impossible to "accidentally" discount a game. The developer looked at their abandoned game, and instead of doing the right thing and removing it from Steam, they instead doubled-down and tried to scam even more people into paying for it. Greedy, and completely unethical. Doing the wrong thing, on purpose, for money. This is not okay. Phantasmata has the cash grab/scam level price of $20 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Really great game that's a lot different from other indie RPG's I've played! Has a unique style that sets it out from the rest as well as really cool characters and a cool story line. Definitely recommend! ❤❤❤
