I liked it except the ending. Was just unsatisfying. Don't get me wrong I'm not asking for a happily ever after, but I was expecting something more finished? Fulfilling? The cheeky references were great and the writing was good so I guess the ending just felt really meh comparatively.
In general I enjoyed my short time with this game. Short, easily digestable walking simulaters like these are totally my jam. Gameplay-wise you just walk around and explore, which is fine by me, and you check stuff out. As geek trash I sometimes chuckled at some of the references. The Reservoir Dogs one was my favourite. The University was in general a treat to explore. A sort of quest log would've been nice, since at one point I received 3 seperate sets of instructions and I tend to quickly forget things like locations etc etc The three main voice actors do a pretty good job
not the two main cultists, including the Karen
, the sound design is on point, the sparse music set the scene. In short, I enjoyed my short time with this game, but the ending kind of soured it.
At the end, the tentacles of the Old God could've used more work on the animation to make it more impactful. The way I saw it, it felt like fake rubber tentacles created by the director, combined with hallucinations from the gasses and the directer shouting at the end, made me first think it was all a hoax after all. It all feels unintentially ambigious
I wasn't the biggest fan of the shooter chapter after the credits, but if this experiment is any indication of them maybe creating a lovecraftian themed shooter, consider me hooked.
Great graphics, great story, nice voice acting and cool achievement hunting. It was a positive experience. Yes, I could recommend it.
putain que c'est mauvais
It's a bit too shallow of an experience to recommend. I like some of the atmosphere and architecture. The story is kind of a mess that ends way too abruptly. The additional content needlessly turns the epilogue into a crappy FPS. The tone in particular is very off. It's supposed to be mysterious and eerie while simultaneously tounge-in-cheek. Characters are barely developed, if at all.
"If you're a fan of eldritch horror and walking simulators, this is the game for you." -- Werner Herzog
On the technical side, playing this game with anything but a QWERTY keyboard layout is huge pain, as the only way to move in the game is by using the WASD keys. No way to remap it, no way to even use arrows or a pad controller. Apart from this, the game has some nice or funny moments but the writing is not memorable. It has some plot holes and inconsistency that damage the story by the end. Nevertheless, it's not a game for everyone, but if you fancy a light game with some twist on pulpy cosmic horror tropes, it is short enough to be enjoyable despite its flaws. My biggest regret is the bonus chapter after the ending. It changes the gameplay to something much more action oriented and it is not very good at it. Beside, it cheapens the ending of the story and the voiceover during the credits. Not a memorable game, and I would not recommend it to most of the people, but could be worth for the curiosity.
great game, especially for the low price point, i havent finished it yet but i already like the setting and the story so far. its a nice little gem of a game especially for those who are looking for games which reference archeological related stuff and are down for uncovering a mystery. though some ppl might find this game to be simple, and not challenging enough, i actually like how much hand holding the game does for you, so instead of getting a frustrating ui or confusing map, the gameplay experience of walking trough the various places of ashgate university was a smooth experience and made for a quick and easy game to enjoy. the game art is also good, i was worried that it would look uncanny but the game art actually looks very well done and i liked looking at the various statues in the game. overall its an interesting idea, definitely something that i would recommend.
entertaining, surprisingly funny walking-simulator full of nice easter eggs.
