Before starting Master Magistrate, I found the premise already very interesting as you’re trying to unfold the mysteries as a Shinsengumi, which were a special police force. Overall, the whole game takes place in the late shogunate period so sword wielding isn’t rare during the playthrough. While the player mostly investigates and solves different cases here, I still happen to find different aspects of this visual novel I appreciate. You see, besides finding the culprit, this game introduces a lot of different cute girls and made me get attached to them after going through each case together. In the end, I found myself warming up to characters I quite couldn’t stand in the beginning. Currently, Master Magistrate is in early access and contains three of four chapters of the main story plus a bonus chapter. There will be extra post-story content with branching routes after the completed story. Shimei becomes the new administrator at the Nakamachi magistrate’s office. As a magistrate, he works as a detective, lawyer, jury, and judge – all at the same time – and gets assigned to cases to find out the truth about whom is guilty and violated the law. Of course, finding the culprit is the main goal here, yet Shimei tries to prove the innocence of suspects as well when something seems off. During solving cases Shimei luckily doesn’t have to work alone but receives help from his team, which includes his childhood friend Rimu, that are responsible for tasks such as paperwork or police patrols. After all, teamwork is important when he wants to be successful. Master Magistrate opens with a murder that took place and the suspect Koume who happened to be at the crime scene and got accused of it shortly after. Due to Shimei noticing something is off, he tries to prove her innocence. As aforementioned, I enjoyed the historical setting in Master Magistrate. Action isn’t missing here and the cool thing here is that even the adorable girls shouldn’t be taken lightly as they’re even more familiar with swords than our protagonist is. A big positive aspect here as well is that while, sadly, the typical super long hairstyles I am used from the genre history are missing here, I found the clothes quite outstanding and beautiful as they fit just fine with each girl. Of course, that also means that the way to solve crimes is a bit limited compared to nowadays and finding evidence might work out a little bit different, but in the end, it’s all about careful investigating. Something I noticed about this game is that it doesn’t only introduce its adorable characters but we also get a better insight into them during the playthrough. Slowly, the reader finds out more about their story, although Shimei already knew Rimu for a long time she is always by his side to aid him with the investigations. While romance isn’t available as of now, there is plenty of fan-service implemented here that caught me off guard due to me assuming this visual novel was only about crime-solving but luckily, it worked out just fine for me as I absolutely adored each of them. Due to the entirely different personalities here, the reader will definitely manage to find one or another girl they find amiable. As of now, a lot of things are still left unexplained but I could already tell that there is a serious story going which gets hinted between all the cases the player goes through. I liked the concept that you don’t only solve cases one after another but there is also something going on that isn’t revealed yet and will keep its reader on the edge until it gets resolved later. Additionally, each chapter revolves around a different case and noticeably improved with its story and length as well. That being said, I already look forward to the final chapter to get to know more about the mysteries and can’t wait until being able to play through it. The bonus chapter, that got added recently, doesn’t add anything to the main story but only serves the purpose of being comedic and containing more fan-service. During going through the cases, there are two different modes the reader will be able to play through: The investigation and trial. Basically, you only collect evidence and interrogate suspects or possible witnesses. I found this process was quite easy to go through as important items are highlighted most of the time and you just have to move to every direction to talk to everyone available. When the reader gathered all possible evidence, they will move to the trial. During the trial, Shimei still interrogates possible suspects and tries to uncover their lies. I found this mode a bit trickier as you have to present the very right evidence at the right time but luckily, there is no penalty for wrong choices, so the player can just test out every possible option to advance with the trial. Graphic-wise, Master Magistrate is gorgeous and contains a lot of different CGs. Characters’ expressions constantly change and they even wear different clothes depending on the scenario. Sometimes, I noticed that the characters’ drawings look a little bit off, especially when they are presented from the side, although it didn’t influence my enjoyment for this visual novel a lot during the playthrough. Black and white CGs are available here as well for more exciting scenes. Additionally, Master Magistrate contains high-quality voice acting that greatly helped with my immersion and made the characters more lively but sadly, the protagonist isn’t voiced here. Master Magistrate is an interactive visual novel where careful investigating and presenting evidence is essential. While this game focuses on finding the culprit of each case, proving one’s innocence is just as much important. Overall, the outstanding thing about this game is that the player gets to know each character better and will also spend more time with them. Slowly, each character grew on me and I have to admit I can’t wait until the main chapter is done. One reason is that I want to know all the mysteries that are still open and more importantly, I am extremely curious about the post-stories with branches and am hoping for some more romance scenes as it would be a total waste to not include them with all the adorable girls that appear here.
Lord Azazel Group
Master Magistrate surprised me a lot. In a very positive way. When I purchased this visual novel I imagined how it was going to be having already played similar games. But it was very well written and when the whole plot came together it blew my mind. Didn't expect what happened. The story is very good and entertaining, the art is beautiful and both the music and character voices complement the game. The main story is divided in 4 cases/chapters. There is also a bonus chapter and it's called Fanservice [for that reason, lol]. It can be found in the chapter selection at the menu. It's short and can be played in any order because it doesn't relate in any way to the main story and no important information is presented. Each one of the 4 cases consist of novel/investigation/trial parts. Case 4 is the only chapter with story choices that lead either to the True Ending or the Alternate Ending. The adult patch add 2 scenes to the Alternate Ending. That's the only adult content available in the main story. The adult patch is free and can be found on Irodori website. It also adds an Epilogue and 5 character/romantic routes. It's a lot of content and 22 adult scenes. Routes 1/2/3: Available at the Epilogue. There is a brief introduction before you have to choose between Rimu; Sakura and Koume. Rimu:
Funny and heartwarming. Liked that Rimu became assertive.
Sakura:
Funny and heartwarming. Her shy side is the best.
Koume:
This is the one I liked the least. Won't say why as not to interfere with future players judgment.
Route 4 - Okita: It's available at the chapter selection.
Interesting and weird. Don't know how I feel. In this route you have a choice. It leads either to new information about a couple of unanswered questions from the main story or to the romantic path. Suggest you play both.
Route 5 - Yamanami: Available after finishing the game at least once.
To start this route you choose Chapter 4 - Day 3: Case at chapter selection. Forward until the choice and you will see a third option is now available.
By far the best route.
This is an Alternate Ending. It's emotional and I even cried a little. Yamanami is my favorite character since the main story and I feel she was 'rectified' after the events on Case 4. One thing that I missed was seeing Shimei and Yamanami achieving their goal in her route. After her redemption and their loss, a family/children was the one thing I wanted to see. It was a shame the route ended before that.
They made the right decision doing the adult content separate from the main story. Otherwise it would have disrupted the pace. As it is, the patch feels like secondary stories to what the game really is about
[a conspiracy]
The only downside is that the patch has mosaics. I didn't know that before purchasing the game so I was disappointed in that regard. To me it doesn't even feel like adult content when they have mosaics. What's the point? If it's an adult content for adults, then as an adult I should be able to see it. I don't think every game needs adult content. It's not a necessity. But when made available, it shouldn't be censored, least with mosaics. It's really weird. I honestly wish the visual novel industry would stop with this sh*t. There are no achievements related to the patch content. All achievements are obtained in the main story. Hope they do a sequel. For the main story and the patch routes [#NoMosaics]. It would be nice to see new cases and how the magistrate and shogunate are doing. For the patch, it be nice to see their relationships down the road and even years later. I would purchase and play for sure. I purchased this game at full price. Totally worth it. Highly recommended. 10/10
"Ecchi Version of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney! (。
+ Point : The unique game system "Trial" makes this ADV VN even more interesting.
[1] Intro
Master Magistrate (Ouka Sabaki / 桜花裁き). This is an adventure type visual novel made by Irodori and published by ShiraVN & HOBIBOX. The original version was released in 2017 as an adult version in Japan, and the PS Vita edition (2018) was released without adult contents. According to publisher comments, adult content for this global PC Steam Edition is expected to be available through DLC in the future.
[2] Game Experience
This game is an ADV type visual novel. The story sets the alternative history premodern Japan, but it's actually mixed up like Manga/Anime, Gintama(銀魂) . As a newly appointed Magistrate, you will solve a mysterious case that suddenly occurs in a peaceful village, Nakamachi. Searching for clues and judging cases is the main game content, but there are often ridiculous ecchi service events around you. There are currently limited cases available for early access, but each case has complete content. Anime character artwork and BGM are quite impressive. The nice cherry blossom background makes the vibe look gorgeous, and this game is full of cute and unique anime characters. The volume of events you can see may increase depending on your reasoning success rate. Its trial part is quite interesting, it contains dramatic cutscenes like Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. Of course, this is somewhat different from modern scientific investigations. It is based on people's testimony, evidence and your reasoning. But that's definitely a charming point of this game.
[3] Pros (+) & Cons (-)

[+] Well Written Scenario
[+] Good Service Contents
[+] Dynamic Cutscene Event
[+] Professional Voice Acting

[-] [strike]Unicode Runtime Error[/strike]
[-] [strike]Unstable Game Engine[/strike]
[-] Lack of Love Romance
[-] Unclear Investigation Part

P.S : Thanks to the developer's quick feedback, runtime errors fixed.
[4] Verdict : Game 8/10 (Early Access)
Master Magistrate. The game has these exciting detective elements that are not common in adventure visual novels. Best of all, attractive characters and full voice support make this game more shine. Each scenario is well written and available at a reasonable price for early access. Adult content may later be available via DLC, so there is no reason to miss this game. If you can afford it, try this game. Although this game is still in the early access at the time I wrote this review, keep in mind that I have finished the Japanese version. This means that I've already completed the whole game and know exactly what to expect when the final chapter gets released. + A great storytelling combined with excellent characters, each with their own quirks and humor. + Excellent character development that is actually believable and relatable. + Your deductions during the trial is rewarded by an excellent story narration. Don't expect witness breakdown at the level of Phoenix Wright though... + Although the lack of BGMs results in a lot of recycling, they are quite catchy. + Chapter 4 really puts the prior chapters to shame with an unexpected dive to the dark end. It is not an exaggeration when I say that the plot is brutal and violent. + The game encourages deep thinking, but doesn't punish you much at all for making wrong choices. In fact, some of the responses are hilarious and the achievements encourages you to make wrong choices. After you made a wrong choice, you can continue as if nothing happened. - The route of each girl isn't explored during the game, each of the girl's chapters are accessed individually only after you have beaten the game. There's no real romance during the main game. - During the investigation sequence, the game doesn't necessarily keep track of all the places you need to go. This can lead to a wild chase where you are running around in locations searching for that one clue in order to progress. Do investigate the dorm during chapter 4 after a certain event takes place, this should save you a lot of hassle. - Similarly to most of the other investigation games, the game is sometimes vague in demanding what kind of evidence you have to present. I've checked this game's translation up to chapter 3 and I must say, they're doing a pretty good job. The only complaint I had was that 会計士 was translated to bookkeeper once, but that was promptly fixed with a hilarious patch summary to boot.
This is a very soft "yes" for me. Really, the biggest factor in me recommending this game instead of not recommending it comes down to the fact that I got it for only $20. Master Magistrate (MM) is a Shogun-era version of the Ace Attorney franchise. You have murder cases. Do investigation. Collect evidence. Confront them in the courtroom. Figure out the inconsistency in their testimonies. And finally convict the murderer. If you ever play any of the courtroom-style games, you will be very familiar with the core gameplay of MM. Please don't expect MM to be as polished as Ace Attorney. The mysteries in general are underwhelming. Most of the big twists on the way to a conviction are very mundane. The arguments that the MC uses to corner a suspect are often unrealistic. Seriously, many times the MC simply throw a bunch of conjectures and hypotheticals at the suspect. Although there are no concrete proofs, the suspect just wilted and confessed. I count maybe one case in which there is a piece of evidence that is even close to decisive. To be honest, I can forgive the lack of logical polishes in MM. I mean, it costs $20. I don't expect it to be Ace Attorney. I'm more annoyed by the thematic consistencies in the story-telling. Many times unbelievable events just randomly happen because they can. For example, a politically powerful character bullies the MC for much of the game, only for the MC to out of nowhere gain the power to prosecute this character. In an extremely jarring event in the game, a character who is supposedly equal to the MC in rank is somehow able to arrest the MC despite the massive amount of martial and political power on the MC's side. This might sound strange but I find that the best way to enjoy MM is to treat it as a warm visual novel, rather than a courtroom game. If you expect to be thrilled intellectually, you end up scratching your head a lot. At the end of the day, there are just enough affable characters and mysteries in MM to make it a mildly enjoyable ride. For $20 of course.

This was a surprisingly excellent find! A really great blend of Visual Novel storytelling, with Phoenix Wright-esque mystery investigation. The writing is what grabbed me however, with a truly engaging story with fun and interesting characters. While one or two of the court cases do suffer from the standard 'I know what i'm trying to say, I just need to click the right item to say it' issue, the inclusion of a quicksave feature does mitigate any frustration. If you have even a passing interest in this I wholeheartedly reccomend it! And for those of you who are 18+, I would also reccomend getting the adult patch from their official website as well. Rather than jamming in random forced H-Scenes throughout the story, it wisely saves them as an extended epilogue chapter which really makes it feel justified and natural for the characters. Combining that with surprisingly tasteful writing for even the kinky scenes (making it come off more as genuine character exploration of their sexualities and tastes rather than just forced fetishes) and it really becomes a charming and fun addition to the story!
