The game was enjoyable while it worked but it's kind of buggy and not prone to modern systems. The storyline is okay, graphics are good enough, controls not very complex and the responsiveness is okay too. Interesting upgrade system lets customize a lot of the "mecha". But the progression system doesn't mingle well with collectibles (we must replay the whole chapter in order to try to interact with collectibles). The customization is not very well balanced either it seems, you may have extra money but won't find a happy mix-up of equipment to balance the weight vs power budget. The part that really makes me "not recommend" this game though, is instability. Mainly in "on foot" missions (where you play outside the mech, as a 3rd pers shooter), the game crashes very often, and I was progression locked in "Act III - Providence" level, an "on foot" mission which probably I would only be able to play if I "connect" it with the previous mission (I think t he last chapter from "act II"). There was a discussion that claimed that limited frame rate solved the issue but in my case I just needed to retry over and over until the mission "played through", until it crashed and locked progression. So for now the feeling is of frustration and I don't think I'll grind further to finish this game. I'll move to something else.
This game is okay I guess. I played it as a child and never beat it, so I bought it on sale to finish as an adult. Although I do have a tremendous soft spot for this game because I liked it so much when I was younger, playing it now I can definitively say... it is okay? If you get it for $5 on sale, expecting an early 2000s game, then you will be satisfied. For my play-though, I played on Normal difficulty. The balance of the game is basically all over the place. The missions give you just enough money to be able to upgrade your Wazer (mech) to be able to keep up with the enemies. However, if you want to try a new loadout, or if you upgrade your mech incorrectly you may be stuck. I'm not sure if replaying past missions gives you money, but if that's what you have to do, that is still annoying. This issue is made worse by the fact that certain missions require certain parts, and the game will not clearly tell you what you need. So you could drop a couple grand on a pair of legs, just to have to buy another set (totally not talking from experience). That being said, there are a ton of different mech parts and weapons to try to find your perfect play style (though keep in mind that some loadouts may work better than others). The missions are fine. Pretty much what you would expect out of an early 2000s shooter. Linear, the occasional turret section, then usually a boss fight at the end of a mission. To give the game credit, the landscapes are pretty varied. From deserts, to snow, you see it all. My biggest issue with the missions are the boss fights are totally ridiculous. For the boss fight against the mercenary group (the chariot or whatever), I found myself having to rely on the AI of the bosses tweaking out for to beat it. Something that happened often enough for me to abuse it. Oh also, the game likes to throw in on foot sections for some reason. These are just bad. Onto the story (spoilers ahead). I have no prior knowledge of the Front Mission series, so I cannot comment on that front. But, the story, again, is pretty average for a 2000s shooter. You can pretty much guess the plot points before they happen. The game does randomly drops plot points though. Like, the mechanic lady seems to like the main character, but after a while, this point is just forgotten about. Or like the main characters work with some guys from another factions, and we know nothing about them besides they come that faction and they quote Sun Tzu. Also the villain's motivation makes zero sense. He starts war because... he wants to (honest to God the reason they gave). So war breaks out. Then we wants to kill everyone for fighting. What? One positive for the story... It is short I guess. Including crashes, this game took me like 6.5 hours, so it just barely doesn't overstay its welcome. Tips for the Game If you are like me and do not have a mouse with side buttons, this is loadout I recommend (because pushing Q and E in a game where movement was so important was awkward). Use a sniper as you main weapon, and make pressing scroll wheel your precision aim. The sniper will use both of your mechs hands. Stay back as much as possible and, well, snipe enemies as much as you can. Then for you RIGHT shoulder (this one specifically), have a rocket launcher. Have this be tied to your other mouse button. This will be you point defense gun for when those melee mech guys get too close. Then for you LEFT shoulder, but a missile launcher on it. Have this tied to Q or E. This will be to shoot helicopters or far enemies or whatever. This recommendation is not exhaustive, but its how I got through the game. Tips for the Final Bosses (Spoilers) The four chariot people are dumb. Prioritize the lady with the rotary cannon and the lady who charges you, making sure to move around the perimeter of the map, and pick up the health drop as much as possible. I think the code for the rotary cannon is busted, because she just melts you. Try to save you E.D.G.E. and kill one of them as fast as possible. One those two are gone, you can use range to kill the missile guy and the bazooka lady. Prioritize the missile guy because his missile are lock on and the bazooka lady is easy enough to dodge. Once missile guy is gone, just sweep up bazooka lady. The E.D.G.E. final boss has a big difficulty spike in his second phase. His missiles can one shot you if you are not careful (I was using the last unlocked mech torso). For his first phase, just ignore his machine gun fire and try to headshot him with you sniper as much as you can. Then when he activates his E.D.G.E. dodge the missiles. Try to build up your E.D.G.E. meter as much as your can in this phase. Do this until you get him down to his second phase. For this phase, do not even boost until he activates his E.D.G.E., because if he hits you, it will stun you, and the missiles will then kill you. All I can say is try to kill him as fast as possible with well placed sniper shots and your E.D.G.E.. Then for the third phase, you can play as normal. For the final AI Boss guy. For phase 1, I don't know if killing the lady affects the story at all, I didn't want to replay it, and she didn't do that much damage so I just ignored her, Again do not boost at all. Wait until the Boss goes to shoot his mega laser thing (this takes a couple seconds to activate), then boost to avoid it, avoiding the emps. Your arms will likely be broken the entire fight, just try to preserve your legs and torso. When the laser is done you have a couple seconds to shoot the core. Repeat until phase 1 is done. The lady will try to shoot you, but she seems to only target your arms, so it doesn't matter. For phase 2... this phase is tricky. I don't really know how I beat it because a lot of the attacks seem unavoidable. Also the health pick up takes a while to respawn so there's that. So stay on the top layer and start with the power cores on the bosses chest. All the while, make sure your legs don't break. Again, your arms will be broken the entire fight, but if your legs go, you're more than likely going to die. Once the 4 cores across the top of the chest are gone, go for the three on the bottom. These ones are weaker then the top 4. They have shields so you can't clearly shoot them from the top of the arena. The middle of the 3 bottom cores can just barely be shot from the to of the arena of you shoot the very bottom of it, so do that. Try to spend as little time at the bottom of the arena as possible, because... I don't know what attack it was, but it killed me a lot when I was down there, so yeah. Anyway. When those cores are killed, there will be another core/laser, like from phase 1. I think this one is weaker. Do the same strategy as with the phase 1 core/laser. Good job. You beat Front Mission Evolved.
Не слушайте фанатиков старых частей. Эта игра хороша. В детстве столько в нее наиграл и это было потрясающе. И даже сейчас приятно вернуться поиграть в нее, на рынке ведь не много подобных игр на самом деле
Front Mission Devolved would be a more fitting name. Square seems to be hellbend on killing their fanchises. Sure the PSX era already saw a 1st person game, but this is ...sadge. You play 1 guy who, in a forgettable story, turns into a 1man army to save (part of) the world. Not much sense or reason given. Levels are utterly linear...you walk the only existing path destroying anything moving along it. No characters, limited customisation, no branching pathes...neither tactic nor strategy involved. You just take the biggest stick (with enough range) and go poking. Combat is....bland. Due to a lack of group mates and defensive or/and supportive capabilities, you basically just shoot enemies at max range, ideally before getting shot. Seeing how this is basically the last Front Mission so far (15 years at the time of writing),you can take a guess how well that worked out.... I can't even recommend this to Front Mission or Mecha action fans...
A fun non-Triple-AAA mech game with really good mech combat, interesting various setpieces, lots of customization and cool cutscenes, but waaaay too short and with a forgettable plot (like most mech games). However, I enjoyed this game far more than Armored Core 6. - Campaign: Nice diverse mix of mech action, gunship door-gunner action & (unpolished) third-person action. But with only 17 missions in 5 acts it is way too short. - Presentation: This game has cool CGI cutscenes, but also well made ingame cutscenes for its time (it's no Metal Gear Solid, but at least it's trying... looking at you Armored Core). It has unique plot characters, civilians & hostile soldiers on the ground, bringing life to the world, unlike in many other mech games which can't even be bothered with showing human beings (yeah FromSoftware, again, looking at you). - Plot: Nothing that will keep you at the edge of your seat, but nothing too terrible. More important characters have their little quirks, but are cliche otherwise. The game is way too short and doesn't spend as much time with the characters as one would like. But you grow to like your buddies following and support you in most missions more than in other mech games (which give you utterly faceless "buddies"). The thin plot serves to tie different setpieces in various biomes together and doesn't hold back on good old tropes. - Music & Sound: Sound is fine for its time. The orchestral music serves its purpose, nothing that stands out, but not annoying either. - Multiplayer: It has MP, i have no interest in MP. - Replayability: You can replay any mission with your unlocked mech parts & weapons, but there is a gameplay restriction on certain leg configurations in some missions (most missions can only be played with biped legs, one mission with hover legs and few missions with quadruped legs). I wish they didn't include this restriction. You can collect bonus emblems or destroy hidden sensors (1 of 20 bla bla bla) if you like that kind of stuff (i don't). - Technical: I had no issues with bugs or crashes. But it's a console port... and not one of the good ones. The options are extremely rudimentary. - Mods: Unfortunately there are only a handful of mods available for this console port. Conclusion: This game had much potential, it could've used a longer campaign, a more polished 3rd person mode, a more interesting and meaningful story and less cliché characters. I enjoyed it much more than i expected and i had more fun and was more invested into the world than in my recent Armored Core 6 playthrough, which was rather disappointing (especially considering it's a FromSoftware game...or rather quick cash grab). Play the game yourself and build your own opinion.
still a fun game if you love your Mecha and any of the older Front Mission games... solid 8/10!
TL;DR: What does this game have in common with the series? Setting. Nothing else. It's bite-sized absolute crap, to the point of underflowing and becoming good. Aesthetics are a washed out, characters are visually bland, and age didn't help with visuals overall. If you set a high resolution, you'll be able to count the pixels on the textures. It's amazing. The music is forgettable (but not incredibly bad), and sound design is spotty at best. Some weapons will have a nice punch, while others will sound like free stock sound being heard on a $2 earbud. Some cutscenes of wanzer battles are still amazing, and that's it. But the story? Oh boy, THE STORY. The story is absolute bonkers. The writing on the series is mostly serious, with a good amount of flair and color. Yes, there is a group of rebels fighting the government, but that doesn't impede a rebel general of having a story about how he destroyed a wanzer with a punch (with "image proof" to boot). But FME? "The powers tried to build a space elevator together. But they failed and abandoned the project. Then they all built their own space elevators. Then, an organization was able to finish building the abandoned space elevator without a SINGLE PERSON IN THE WORLD noticing that." Yes, you can say that a superpowered AI could've interfered a LOT, but no one EVER was able of notice a SPACE ELEVATOR BUILT? That's a stretch and a half a dozen. Characterization is also absurd. DHZ soldier called Yun is a white blond boy. Basically the protagonist but blonde. The soldier from your country that has hated your guts from day one (because you tried to risk yourself in the middle of a warzone despite being a civilian, fair), speedruns from "you're crazy, stay out of this" to "please, don't risk yourself, I love you" in a few hours flat. The writing in general is the lowest point this series has even been, even considering Left Alive. If you don't take it seriously, you'll have fun. Gameplay? Aside from the excessive collectibles every mission (to the point a room may have several, even of the same type), the gameplay is great. Enemies are varied enough, customization options are plenty, movement is fun, so is shooting. If you always wanted to try a non-turn-based because the fights and piloting always looked fun, this scratches the itch. Missions also don't over-extend themselves, and so does the game (even on Hard, costing you some retries on a few parts, it's about 7 hours of gameplay). Game kept crashing when starting the campaign, but Windows 7 compatibility mode worked for me. One mission was crashing often, but after a while the game allowed me to keep progressing without crashing. So, if it's so bad, why positive review? Doesn't matter. Reading comprehension and all that.
Weak trash. Story is cringe, customization is lackluster, gameplay is awful. Avoid.
