Night Striker Gear is a brand new sequel to the 36 year old arcade original from Taito. Gear was developed by M2, with Hiroshi Iuchi as director, who's best known for Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, and Gradius V. This is his first new game in a long time, and it delivers. This came out head to head with Ninja Gaiden 4, so I hadn't played or even seen any of it until my flight back from Japan a few days ago. I loaded it up on the plane and was instantly hooked. Everything about the game is executed extremely well, from the retro art and graphics, to the soundtrack, and perhaps most importantly, the scoring. Scoring gives games infinitely more longevity, so it's important to refine the details and make it engaging. And that's exactly what they did with NSG. It's actually a very simple system, too. Most enemy formations have one red enemy in them, and if you destroy that one first, you get a 100,000 point bonus. Which enemy in the lineup is red is usually random, so sometimes you'll want to delay shooting until you have a clear shot. This gets risky because new enemy waves come in quickly, so if you wait even a tiny bit too long, you'll start getting overwhelmed, have to dodge some bullets, and may end up letting some enemies get away. There's a million point "wipe out" bonus at the end of each stage if you destroy most of the enemies in it, so it's really important to not let too many escape. It's very hard to get every 100k bonus in a stage, let alone the whole game, so there's a scoring ceiling here that could keep anyone busy for a very long time. With that said, this isn't the highest scoring path through the game. It's better to take B' instead of E, then go on to F'. But this is what I played the most, so I just stuck with it. It would be cool if the leaderboards had different boards for each end stage route you could take, but there's just one board for everything. If you want to score as high as you can, there's no reason to do anything but the optimal path. M2 definitely understands this, given their work on the Darius games, so I'm sure they had some reason to not split it (tech issue or budget?). It's not too big of a deal because there's also the unlockable B-Side mode, which has you play every stage in the game in order, instead of the standard Darius choose your own adventure style. I do have some more gripes with the game though, one of which is pretty major. First, all of these Space Harrier type games have poor visibility, and this one is certainly no different. It can be hard to see what's coming at you because your ship blocks your view, but that's just an inherent part of the genre I suppose. The one thing that's really unforgivable is the lack of any training options. Again, M2 always does this better than any other developer on the planet, so they must have had some reason to not include at least a basic stage select. But whatever the reason is, this is an absolutely necessary feature for any score attack game, so I really hope they add it in an update, at least. It's like releasing a fighting game with no training mode. You just don't do that. With that said, Night Striker Gear an absolutely excellent game, and it'll probably end up being my second favorite game of 2025, at least. I couldn't give it a stronger recommendation, so check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7k3ixfrCTw
Banger of a game. M2 PLEASE BRING BATTLE GAREGGA TO STEAM
As much as I want to support M2 in the vain hopes of getting more quality ports, the truth is I don't like this genre of shooter at all. But the first Night Striker was a surprisingly decent game! Definitely worth picking up that recent Operation Night Strikers for. Having said that, I hate it when a game releases resting on the laurels of its legacy creator's reputation, which tends to blindfold many a player into thinking this has to be some return to greatness. (Remember how you felt before Left Alive, Mighty No. 9, R-Type Final 2 and Shenmue III released? And look how those turned out.) Granted, Night Striker Gear isn't that bad. But for those us with high standards and refined tastes-- all honed on Iuchi's true masterpieces of the past-- I can tell you that Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun and Gradius V, this is not. Visibility is always a problem, the content is skimpy and fleshless, no way to practice individual stages, and a whopping 15-minute playtime per run... which is laughable, even for an arcade shooter. Even worse, the soundtrack sounds like it's trying to be an epic score, but isn't even epic enough to sniff Hitoshi Sakimoto's farts. Point blank, the music sucks. But, there's a reason why this game doesn't reach those standards Iuchi himself raised us up to. Translated from Hiroshi Iuchi's blogpost on November 11th of this year: "...I plan to mark Ver1.3.0 on 11/11 as a temporary milestone. This project ranks among the top three worst experiences I've ever had, and it's taken a huge toll on my energy and stamina. My physical condition isn't great either. I feel terrible for everyone who's been waiting, but I'm going to use up my accumulated paid leave and take some time off. To all the developers listed in the staff credits: you truly worked incredibly hard putting up with my constant yelling. I want to sincerely say, thank you for your hard work. Honestly, without this team, I don't think we could have rebuilt nearly everything from scratch in such a short time, finished it, and released it to the world. Thank you so much." Yes, you read that right: M2 thought it was a good idea to let Iuchi off his passion project-- the decade-plus Ubusuna-- so him and his team could literally rush a rebuild of this game from scratch. That's why NSG feels so skeletal in feature. That's why NSG doesn't feel as wonderful as his previous works... and on top of that, it even took its toll on his health. Great, isn't it? All-in-all, Night Striker Gear proves (like their recent, sloppy Salamander III) that M2's true strength lies in porting, not developing. They're stretching themselves too thin by delving into whole new projects, and now we're getting rushed mid-tier new games in lieu of S-tier ports. Think about it: M2 could finish the Toaplan Arcade Garage series and give us a definitive Batsugun or Out Zone release. M2 could port CAVE's other danmaku masterworks, which have only been increasing in stature and replayability. M2 could finally work on releasing Raizing's arcade classic Armed Police Batrider, one of the most astonishing and exciting shooters of all time! Instead, this is what they insisted on. Tell you what, M2. If money is such an issue to reverse-engineer PCBs, I've got an idea for you that'll guarantee not only sales, but newfound fans of the shmup genre:
Port your ShotTriggers releases to Steam.
A worthy follow up to the original Night Striker, though one might wish there was simply more of it. Overall though, despite my love of the og, Night Striker could be a more mindless, cruisin' experience. Here the gameplay is more focused, more difficult, and overall more thoughtful. There aren't any bosses here where you can stand still and hold fire and they die like in Taito's progenitor. The bosses are all chaotic and creative, calling for you to make some impressive dodges with bullet patterns I've never seen attempted in a rail shooter. They feel very "Treasure" in a way, which is perhaps appropriate given Iuchi's involvement. I like that the game "gates" its final boss behind the requirement of getting at least one Wipe Out (almost every enemy killed, esp every captain). I mean, you are going to hit this almost always anyhow, but it's a good incentive for less skilled players to try to be more creative and aggressive. I came around on having your shot power tied to your gear- it's a trade off to use you over-powered mech with homing shots. If you use it too much without collecting blue items or killing red captains, you can find yourself seriously underpowered during a boss. I said I came around to it because it provides a necessary level of balance to the game and teaches you to be strategic with the mech form. If you really want a longer experience, you unlock a mode to play every stage in sequence after you beat all four final stages. Surviving this will certainly be a test of your skill. Rumor has it there's a new boss at the end of this? I haven't made it yet. my only real gripes are a lack of practice mode, and that the campaign could have used one or two more level variations (why not something set in an amusement park, the game's setting?). But this is ultimately a minor quibble when the base game itself is so good. Well worth it.
Gameplay is fine outside of it feeling directionless and seemingly impossible to dodge enemy attacks. Biggest gripe I have with this game is how bland and boring the music is! The music in Night Striker Gear is comparable to 2011's The Greatest Video Game Music album to give you an idea on how bland boring it is. Maybe wait for a sale if it still looks somewhat interesting to you.
