A Gem I Didn't Even Know Existed
I didn't even know this game existed until a few days ago. My first impressions were pretty weak as I thought it was just a faster paced cover shooter like Gears of War or the original Space Marine since the vibes and settings are similar. The main reason for this is that Vanquish is the first Platinum game I've ever played that doesn't put its cards on the table. There isn't a skill tree that tells you what kinds of crazy stuff you can do or weird things you can come up with. Every single Platinum game has deep mechanics that are optional or hidden deep. For instance, Bayonetta's dodge-offset isn't explained explicitly or isn't part of a skill tree, but most of the tools are there within your reach. It's just a matter of what you do and how you choose to do it. Vanquish, however, is a game of hidden tech. There are multiple hidden ways to proc slo-mo, such as the amazing melee bounce off cover. There are also reload and melee cancels that speed up the game immensely. So it is safe to say that this game has great tech hidden deep within. I genuinely had to look this stuff up because the way this game is designed doesn't really let you experiment and find out stuff like that. And this is my main criticism. If I didn't take the extra step to watch a 10-minute video focused on the hidden tech, I don't think I would've realized how good this game actually is or enjoyed it at all. Additionally, different weapon types having different melees is a very smart way to add more player agency to the game since melee is an essential tool. It being tied to the heat system is doubly smart because that way you really need to decide which tool to use in which situation. That kind of decision making is one of the core reasons this game works. Also, the difficulty selection is one of the most important decisions you have to make as the player. In my opinion, any competent player needs to go for the hard difficulty simply because it forces you to use your whole toolkit, which is exactly when this game shines. As I mentioned in the beginning, you could turn it into a generic cover shooter otherwise, which would be a huge disrespect to the developers. Vanquish is a weird one and it is clear as day. If you are willing to go the extra mile, you'll have a blast with the combat. Though I gotta say, the encounter design is very meh in my opinion, which is a considerable weakness for a game like this, which focuses purely on combat encounters. In the end it may not be the best in Platinum's catalogue but it is unapologetically their game and I love it.
消灭水晶毒蛇Boss(升级版,这里的Boss能隐身了)。
Actually peak childhood game. like metal gear revengence had hot sex with Gears of War and Bulletstorm, and had a child who kicks ass. play this masterpiece.
This game has been an iconic underrated gem over the years, and i understand why. Gameplay is really fun, it really drives your desire to just run into things and shoot, and it gives you enough room to get good at it and experiment new things, if you like third-person shooters and never played this then this should be a must experience for you. Story is corny and visuals have aged, you can tell the 2010 were edgy times, but in the charm that comes with the flavor of corny badass heroes with guns, the game style just shines through. "Nothing like a smoke to remind you that you are alive"
one of the greatest third person games ever made as well as being the best cover shooter ever made
Vanquish is one of those games that deserved far more recognition than it received. I first played the PlayStation 3 demo years ago, but never had the opportunity to experience the full game until it arrived on PC. Returning to it all these years later confirmed that my score is not driven by nostalgia. It comes from how well the game still executes its core gameplay. From beginning to end, Vanquish remains true to its identity. It doesn't try to become an open-world game, it doesn't rely on unnecessary progression systems, and it never wastes the player's time with artificial content. The campaign is linear, focused and constantly pushes the player forward, allowing the gameplay to remain the centre of the experience. Combat is easily the strongest aspect of the game. The ARS suit gives players incredible mobility, allowing them to boost across the battlefield, dodge incoming fire, slide between cover and quickly reposition while maintaining constant pressure on enemies. Melee attacks, different weapon types and the fast pace of every encounter create a gameplay loop that still feels satisfying today. The bosses are not incredibly complex or mechanically demanding, but they fit perfectly within the game's philosophy of keeping combat fast, dynamic and enjoyable. The story itself is fairly simple. Once again, it follows a conflict between the United States and Russia, using a science-fiction setting filled with orbital weapons, advanced technology and robotic enemies. It isn't a story that tries to reinvent the genre, but it provides enough context to support the gameplay without constantly interrupting the action. One thing that disappointed me is how much potential the ending leaves behind. The game clearly opens the door for a sequel that never happened. Personally, I feel PlatinumGames never fully committed to building Vanquish into a larger franchise. In my opinion, the game suffered from weak marketing, especially during the PlayStation 3 era. Even today, I rarely meet people who actually know or have played Vanquish, despite its quality. Considering how popular sci-fi action games remain, I believe the series deserved far more attention than it ultimately received. My biggest criticism is aimed at the PC release. While bringing the game to modern hardware was the right decision, I expected a much more significant visual upgrade when it launched on PC in 2017. Higher resolutions and 4K textures alone were not enough. The presentation still feels dated, some menus look noticeably blurry and the overall visual quality shows its age much more than the gameplay does. For a game that deserved a second life on PC, I believe much more effort should have gone into modernising its presentation. I also found the controller to provide a far better experience than keyboard and mouse. The game's movement and combat simply feel more natural with a controller, making the overall gameplay considerably smoother. Vanquish is the type of game you finish, appreciate for what it offers and move on to your next adventure. It never tries to be bigger than it needs to be, and that is one of its greatest strengths. Despite a fairly generic story and an underwhelming PC remaster, its gameplay remains outstanding and continues to stand as one of PlatinumGames' best action titles. I genuinely believe Vanquish deserved much more than it received. It had the foundations to become a major sci-fi franchise, but instead it slowly faded into the background while other series continued to grow. That's a shame, because even today it remains one of the most enjoyable action games of its generation. Score: 9/10 (1) Trash (2) Horrible (3) Very Bad (4) Bad (5) Average (6) Fine (7) Good (8) Very Good (9) Great (10) Master Piece
my favorite game from Platinum the fast pace and style are really good super underrated 8/10
I am legitimately furious I did not play this game when it came out. I don't want it to age like a fine wine! Inject the adrenaline into my veins! I want games to ram spaceships into enemy lines! I want games to throw huge mechs with an unreasonable number of missiles at me! I want games with bullet time that allows me to increasingly showboat ways of executing enemies just for the raw pleasure of doing so! I want to tell the fat lady who sings to shut the h*** up I'm smoking now! And GOD this game delivers!
