About
The career mode is all about a simulation-style experience. Team performances evolve over time and even new teams enter the field replacing old ones. You start in a backmarker team trying to work your way up. Solid race performances will aid development and refined teamwork over the years improves car setups, but at some point it's often better to move on. Keep up with the active driver market and impress with your race performances to secure a seat in the best possible team for the following season. When you have the car for it, push hard for the championship!
Formula cars are the greatest racing cars in the world with amazing speed, downforce and grip. The game's driving model is built to emphasize this; hitting that apex just right really makes a difference. Slipstream overtakes and intense side-by-side battles create a great race experience. The AI drivers make mistakes, line up for overtakes and offer an engaging challenge for all skill levels.
Optimize risk in your tire strategy on different tracks and temperatures to maximize grip throughout the race. Push to gain positions with your fresh soft tires or try to hold your ground long enough with hard tires to take advantage of the extra durability.
Dynamic weather adds a whole other dimension to strategy. Do you start with wet tires on clear weather to get ready for the coming rain or leave those who do in the dust with soft tires? Or maybe you will do a longer stint with intermediate tires since the rain is light and won't last long. Whatever your plan, always be ready to adjust during the race. Reacting to the strategies of others and taking risks can make underdogs into winners.
Watch out for damage that will affect your car's speed and suspension, some can be fixed during a pit stop, but not all. Whenever you feel the race is slipping away from you and you need just a little extra power, you can push your luck with the high engine mode. If you end up with an engine failure or you just want to conserve your tires, you can use the low engine mode to control the situation.
Play with friends for fun or arrange races on the Discord server to test your skills against the best. Hit up time trials to chase the perfect lap and climb the leaderboards.
Tinker with the data to create your fantasy series; driver and team data and textures files are all moddable and can be shared in the Steam Workshop. Lay back and watch the AI drivers do their thing in spectator mode. Unlock tiny cars and do donuts. Enjoy!

Sadly its a no from me. I just tried it out for some laps so far. First thing that I didnt like was the engine sound. Especially the lack of gear shifting. It sounds as if the cars would only use one gear. Breaks the immersion for me. Second thing is, the video on the store page shows a "from behind" or "3rd person" view camera, which is not in the game. All I found was "dynamic" or "static" option, which didnt change the perspective. The graphics look good and there seems to be a lot to like in this game. If it had more career options / management I would like this as a moddable F1 manager game. You can simulate races, as in let the AI race. And there seem to be plans for a career mode. I might return when this is implemented to see how it is. As I said, with a deep career mode, my issues wouldnt matter that much anymore. As is is now, a no from me...
Yeah this game is good. I'm not even gonna tell you what's in it since there are so many other reviews that tell you that. But all i can say is... This ♥♥♥♥ fun as ♥♥♥♥.
Other reviews have already covered it -- Formula TOP is incredibly well made and a joy to play! The core handling is flowy, the AI is dynamic, and the career is easy to get lost in. Easily my favorite top down racer.
Fun game, love the simple style but don't let that fool you, this game is harder than you think but in a good way. Really looking forward to future content like career, I'm hoping for driver stats to make an impact on cars and maybe the ability to swap drivers around? If you like F1 then give this game a try, I enjoy it, you might too :D
This is easily the best top-down racer I've ever played. The physics is not full-on hardcore but it has more than enough depth to let you feel how the car is responding - you can sense when you've got a good flow through a series of corners , when you've gone too fast into a turn and are trying to balance it so you don't hit the dirt , or when the tyres start to go off. And even better is that you can see the AI having the same issues and therefore take opportunities to get into position to pass based on where you can see them struggling. Pitting for a new set of wets and then being able to catch up and pass AI cars which didn't pit and are now sliding wide and not being to accelerate away really is a first for a game like this. The AI itself so far is really good - they give you enough room most of the time , there is a real sense of them driving with the same tyres and grip etc.. that you have rather than just being path-following bricks. Even in my short playing time so far I've actually had some really good battles with them , passing and re-passing and exploiting weaknesses and being able to plan ahead to do that , instead of what typically happens in 2d games which is the AI just following a path and barging you aside as if you don't exist. So top marks for the gameplay, it's very enjoyable indeed - it actually feels like a race and not just a giant smash-fest. The track roster is a bit limited at the moment but I hope more will be added soon, and I'd love to see a couple more types of vehicle added too - maybe BTCC cars and Formula 2 or Formula Ford style racers? Only 3 things I wasn't as keen on : 1. it doesn't auto-select wet tyres when the race start is wet - that caught me out the first time - maybe it would be better if it automatically selected at least a dry or wet tyre based on the track conditions so if you forget then you at least stand a slight chance of being able to make a strategic recovery? 2. I wasn't able to tell if the gamepad analogue triggers were actually giving me analogue throttle - this was using a PS4 controller on my laptop. In the rain with worn tyres it seemed to be either full wheelspin or no throttle , there seemed to be no ability to ease the throttle in and accelerate gently and avoid wheelspinning like mad. But maybe that's just me as I've only played for fairly short time so far. 3. I couldn't detect any form of drafting benefits , but again perhaps not played long enough to tell for sure. All in all I am very very impressed with this game and I wish the dev the best of luck with it.
