Definitely the best of the 2D Final Fantasy games in terms of story and music. The gameplay, however, not so much. I do not like being forced to use different characters. I like the characters that I like. I don't want to use characters that are not my characters. There are like 15 playable characters and they force you to use almost all of them at some point. Besides that, this is probably the easiest 2D Final Fantasy game. There are no superbosses, and Terra is so stupidly overpowered that everything becomes a joke as soon as you get the Soul of Thamasa relic and learn Quick. But still, it's a good game. 10/10 story and music, but gameplay issues I highlighted knocks it down to a 7/10.

This is probably the best game in the series.
After getting started with JRPGs with E33 and FFVII remakes, this has been my first classical JRPG. And what a fantastic start it was. Remarkable story telling, zero handholding, fantastic characters. Kefka is the perfect villain with a comically evil trickster god vibe. The good guys are rather complex, side quests are well done. Some a bit quirky some a bit somber. WOR was what E33 wanted to be in its act 3 but much better. You had goals beside kill hard bosses to explore the map. Recruiting and finding companions was a really great experience. The combat has far more depth than I imagined. Each companion is unique but undoubtedly the spellcasters rule. Why not 5 stars if all praises then? First of all while the core group of rebels were great there is an abundance of unnecessary companions. That's half a star down. And then there were some parts where I definitely needed a guide because the goals weren’t really clear. Another half a star from there. And finally I softlocked myself before boss and had to continuous left-right moment until random encounters trigger and I get enough xp to unlock a spell. That was surprisingly okay so no star eliminations. Overall, FANTASTIC game. You’ve already played it if you are into the genre but even if not, give it a chance.
Absolutely back asswards that none of the extra content like bonus dungeons was added to this and square enix is so out of touch with what their customers want in the west we'll probably never get it.
