This game is very similar to the Battleships and Carriers of the Pacific. Same makers. Virtually everything is the same as my review for that game. Very basic strategy games, but both good. Keeps your interest and keeps you on your toes, at least for the beginning naval war gamer thru intermediate. I've been gaming a long time and have some fancier games, but these are still great to play. I would highly recommend this as well as the Pacific spin-off for anyone who enjoys a little retro gaming or any beginners to strategy type naval world war II games.

Unfortunately the game is buggy and I have not had a reply from the listed email for reporting the bugs. The error messages are all seem to be in Czech.

Battleships and Carriers – WW2 Battleship Game, developed by Light Strategy Series and published by SLS, is a turn-based naval strategy title that aims to capture the tactical intensity of World War II naval engagements. Drawing inspiration from classic naval wargames, it places players in command of a variety of ships, aircraft, and submarines across several historically inspired theaters of war. Its design leans heavily into strategy and planning, offering a layered experience that challenges players to think several moves ahead while managing resources and positioning in grid-based maps. The game’s content is extensive, featuring more than 80 missions that include iconic battles like Pearl Harbor, the Normandy landings, and the Okinawa campaign. Beyond these historical campaigns, players can also engage in customizable scenarios, ranging from straightforward deathmatches to more complex mission types. This variety adds longevity and replayability, as players can experiment with different tactical approaches or pit various fleet compositions against each other. The game boasts a roster of over 50 unique unit types, including battleships, carriers, destroyers, cruisers, submarines, and various aircraft. This diversity gives players numerous strategic options and encourages experimentation with combined arms tactics to outmaneuver and overpower opponents. While Battleships and Carriers doesn’t seek to dazzle with cutting-edge visuals, its retro-inspired 2D graphics have a certain charm that suits the game’s focus on strategy over spectacle. The interface is clean and accessible, with clear icons and menus that make navigating through unit commands and mission objectives relatively straightforward. This user-friendly approach helps players focus on tactical decision-making without getting bogged down by overly complex controls or cluttered screens. The grid-based movement and attack system, reminiscent of classic board wargames, reinforce the feeling of commanding a fleet in a methodical, deliberate fashion. Strategic depth is arguably the game’s strongest point. Players must carefully manage unit placement, taking into account each vessel’s strengths, vulnerabilities, and special abilities. The resource management aspect, including ship construction and upgrades, adds a layer of planning that extends beyond the battlefield. The inclusion of a technology tree allows players to improve their units over time, customizing their fleet to fit preferred tactics or counter specific enemy threats. Decisions such as when to launch airstrikes, deploy submarines for stealth attacks, or concentrate fire on enemy carriers require careful thought and timing. The pacing of the game supports this thoughtful approach, with turns providing enough time to weigh options without feeling rushed. However, the game is not without its drawbacks. While many players appreciate the strategic challenge, others have found the missions to become repetitive over time, with similar objectives and enemy patterns that can reduce the sense of novelty in later stages. Additionally, the AI, while competent in some scenarios, sometimes demonstrates predictable or inconsistent behavior, which can diminish the challenge and immersion. This can lead to moments where the tactical complexity feels undercut by opponents making questionable moves or failing to respond dynamically to player strategies. Technical issues, including occasional bugs and interface quirks, have also been noted, though these generally do not break the core gameplay experience. In summary, Battleships and Carriers – WW2 Battleship Game is a solid choice for players who enjoy turn-based strategy and historical naval warfare. It offers a comprehensive set of missions, a broad range of units, and a tactical depth that rewards careful planning and strategic thinking. While its presentation and AI may not satisfy those looking for a highly polished or fast-paced experience, the game’s old-school charm and focus on methodical naval combat provide a rewarding challenge. For fans of strategy games who appreciate a slower, more deliberate pace and an emphasis on classic wargaming mechanics, this title offers a respectable and engaging journey into the naval conflicts of World War II.
